I don't think no one except the hardcore fans is interested in one, ten or thirty cd of stones outtakes

a different matter is a deluxe version of a successful album with outtakes or, even better, a new album that might contain finished archive material

I could well imagine that this could be the idea behind this "quick glimpse into the vault": Hardcore-fans are 'busy' until the new Studio-Album comes out and later on they'll also buy the Deluxe-Editions and/or Rarities-Compilation based on archive material - in Fully Finished Studio Quality (not lossy or narrow-band).

Here's some most interesting and revealing observations by "Rev 20 Redlights" published on the messageboard of rocksoff.org
(maybe you find them to be of interest; there's lots of lyrics and the Rev's ideas to be found, by the way):

i think the proper name for track 5 is "Old Eliza Jane". It is the Stones'
version of the many "Liza Jane" variations that originated in the
early 19th century and which became standardized in Appalachia and
New Orleans as "Lil Liza Jane" (young and a real sweetheart) and
"Good Bye Eliza Jane" (when she's gotten jaded and just uses men
for their money, until they inevitably smarten up and kick her to
the curb).

"a song with the refrain "Oh lil Liza, lil Liza Jane" was sung by slaves
before the American Civil War. The name "Eliza Jane" was a standard character
in minstrel shows. A "Liza Jane" tune was first published in 1871. The book
"Negro Folk-Songs", published in 1918, documents a version associated with
a dancing game. Couples would dance in a circle, with an extra woman in the
middle. The extra woman would "steal" one of the men, the odd woman out then
going into the center, this process repeating."

here's a few more of the many variants:

and some lyrics from a 1903 version that perhaps inspired jagger:

Look a’ here, Liza, listen to me
You ain’t the gal you promised to be
Didn’t you say you always would be true?

You went a-driving with Mister Brown
Now I’m the laughing stock of the town
Folks say that I was crazy to trust you

And well, you‘ll know, when I go
I was the fella with the “dough, dough, dough”
Good-bye, Eliza Jane

Look a’ here, Liza, take off those rings
Dig in that trunk, gal, hand me those things

Cough up that old gold watch and chain
Take that umbrella, cause it might rain

Rent time is here, babe, landlord today
I’ll be away; who’s going to pay?
Good-bye, Eliza Jane

But i think jagger takes it a step farther, in that he's
more understanding in his attitude towards eliza. Yeah,
she's back on the streets again, but as somebody once said,
she just can't be chained to a life where nothing's gained,
and nothing's lost. I mean, she can't help it if she's built
that way.

In other words, she's quite familiar with how it feels.
To be on her own. With no direction home.

Old Eliza Jane

aka "back on the streets again"
aka "eliza upchink"

(approx lyrics)

well all, welcome to you
i'm gonna catch up fast
i won't mind you, honey
it wont be the last

if you late, want money
if you want it quick
here's five hundred dollars
hello Big Fat Lips

old eliza's gambling
old eliza jane
old eliza, back on time
back on the street again

you say you want money
if you hate your life
i won't bark, i won't bray
give me all your ride

she will spend my money
she will try it real quick
i'll be stiffening, i love jesus
i wanna stick it in her
(censored)

i said old eliza's gambling
old eliza jane
old eliza's gambling
she's back on the street again

she wont send my jewelry
give me my first show
you don't miss, you don't get to
i dont blow your door

she won't feed her family
i don't need your sass
if i had a million bucks
i would be the last

i said, old eliza's gambling
old eliza jane
old eliza's gagging
she's out on the streets again

you said steal my money
you think it will last
you want five hundred dollars
you want more or less

you weren't meant to do it
you cant pay your rent
you cant pay for all i pray for
back on the street again

you said, old eliza's doing
what you done all day
christian doll says, silly fool
she gonna find a way

you don't wear no bonnet
and will make the rain
all i ever do is to go tell you
when i'm back on the streets again

old eliza's gambling
old eliza jane
here's four hundred dollars
get out on the street and pray

I double checked the lyrics on both the fast and slow version.
Norbert's attempts to put down the lyrics of the fast version are pretty good! .... but the lyrics of the "slow version" are very, very different, even though they are very hard to follow.
I would guess that there should be a "normal speed" version the that slow one, but I could be wrong.
Aaahh, I really love that slow version ...grinning smiley

Hi experts, i am totally thrilled with eliza. the instruments are great but what kind of instrument is this deep humming tone which gives this song the special drive. hard for me to explain in english :-) but maybe somebody knows what i mean.

Wow, well done on the lyrics !
The background on "Lil' Eliza Jane" makes a lot more sense than "Eliza Upchink" for sure, the sole source for that is Wyman's second book, right ?

What's the "slow" version ? The funny one with the drunk people on YT ?

the track 'Dog Shit' has a strong 'Rock n a Hard Place' vibe to it?

But it's better? I love it.

Similar maybe but I wouldn’t say better. The chorus appears to be ‘Bad Luck’. I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that ‘Dog Shit’ was the working title for ‘Pretty Best Up’.

I was going to say Upchink has to be some sort of a mistake. When I was listening the other day I thought he was singing Eliza Jane and it reminded me of a folk song.

NOBODY's PERFECT - Really A Rolling Stones Outtake?

Just listening to this... what do people think? It doesn't have Charlie's typical somewhat aggressive drum sound so I'm thinking more Mick solo outtkake? But it does have Mick's kind of groveled vocals on 'Dirty Work' so I really don't know...

Thoughts?

You can distinctly hear Charlie's Chinese cymbal sound during the song. Maybe the mix is less aggressive than others, but for me it's them. IMHO

Ronnie (solo) and Keith (chords and a few licks). Probably Mick on the phaser guitar as well.

It's the Stones. Bill German mentioned it in Fall 1985 issue of BEGGARS BANQUET as being one of the tracks completed at Right Track. It was dropped for "Hold Back" according to someone who should actually know.

Re: NOBODY's PERFECT - Really A Rolling Stones Outtake?

Personally I hear a bit of "Munich Hilton" in the chords.

Re: NOBODY's PERFECT - Really A Rolling Stones Outtake?

Good catch ! "Munich Hilton" seems to have been the "starting point" for many songs from the 77/85 sessions like "I can't Help It", "Bulldog", "Dancing Girls", etc...

Rocky Dijon once wrote : "19 STITCHES was bandied about at a time when nine other tracks were under consideration at the first mixing sessions in late summer 1985. I always wondered if a possible double album was planned. The weird thing is just how many Keith lead vocals we would have had. The other nine tracks listed at the time were: Strictly Memphis, Nobody's Perfect, Deep Love, Crushed Pearl, You're Too Much, Treat Me Like a Fool, Some of Us Are On Our Knees, Your Love, and I Can't See Nobody. Granted some of the outtakes sung by Keith might have also had Mick vocals by the mixing stage. Still, I'd love to hear the finished (or nearly finished versions) of these tracks."

I don't think "19 Stitches" was a track so not sure what "other" refers to? Was DW already a track ? Apparently "19 Stitches" referred to the stitches Charlie needed after an incident with a beer bottle, the source for that being Beggar's Banquet.

As for the Keith vs Mick vocals, we now have a Mick vocal of Deep Love, maybe more to come ? ;-)

The version from '50 finished studio outtakes' clearly is from the mid-eighties. Kinda weird to put it on the deluxe version of an album originally released 4/5 years prior.

That's probably why it's NOT included.

Does anybody know who plays the other guitar on Built That Way? The main riff is obviously Keith but I for the life of me can't figure out who the second guitar is. Possibly Wayne Perkins?

I would say Wayne Perkins.

I see that it was cut during the Black And Blue Jan Feb sessions in Rotterdam (tks Nico), so other options could be Jeff Beck and Rory Gallagher, but I am 100% sure that neither Jeff nor Rory are on Built this way.
