but might have been another story on The Beatles, and how they blazed trails and dominated the British Invasion.
Or maybe it was a university course on Dylan, and how he became the so-called "spokesman for his generation".

Imho 100 years from now 3 figures will be remembered and lauded : Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and the Stones.
The rest will be the object of research by train-spotters, just like some very minor 20's-30's Blues figures are now known only to music historians.

The (imo goddamm awful) Beatles will still be studied... in classes of sociology under the "popularity and mass hysteria in 1960's Western world" research section.

Jack Benny. W.C. Fields. George Burns and Gracie Allen. Fred and Adele Astaire. Bob Hope. Fanny Brice. Buster Keaton. Houdini. Remembered and revered? Books written about them? Every scrap of vintage film pored over? Okay. If that's their fate.

Aside from occasionally Bob Hope & George Burns - because they were very old and that's not what they were remembered for, the memories of the rest are fading. And no one reads books anymore.

The metaphor "rolling stone" is very very old. They turn it into a moniker that is associated with a logo known all over the world and yet eventually less and less people will know that they were a band. They have created something that will outlast their own identity.

my take: Hendrix will be the "Mozart" of Rock....the Stones and the Beetles will be the "Beethoven" and "Bach"...

AC/DC will come to epitomize what "Rock" is....

Chuck Berry will come to epitomize what "Rock n' Roll" is....

I think Dylan will take more heat for his "borrowing" for one...and I just don't see some fuzzy-headed kid w/ a honky-voice being "The Guy" when people think of "Rock" 100+ years from now....

For the Record: I don't want to start the "Is Bob Dylan a Plagiarist" debate here...but, the very fact that he's been accused means it'll be there in the human-record....so how he is viewed 100+ years from now will depend on how "Plagiarism" is defined and/or viewed....

Heck, people might dump the Stones into the "Cultural Imperialist" bucket and say they aren't worth a crap b/c they "stole" too!

it all depends on what the experience of "being human" is like in 100 years....and the values that creates....b/c it will not be the same as today.

I imagine that their name at least will be remembered for a long time to come. Every history course covering the second half of the 20th Century will at least mention the youth culture explosion of the time and its pop music scene, and name check the Beatles and the Stones.

And I totally read books. Finished two by Nick Kent (largely a waste of time) and about to start on Bill Gates' latest and then on to one I have been meaning to start for some time, The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee. I probably read 10 to 30 books a year depending on their depth and difficulty. Almost none have to do with music or entertainment, almost all are historical or historical fiction.

Music and entertainment can be quite historical. Reading a book on Bix Beiderbecke from the 1920s makes that historical period come alive.

Mick and Ronnie fathered children in their seventies. So assuming normal life expectancy each will be remembered by at least one person 80 years from now.

I’ve always felt that these so-called degrees on popular music acts are daft. You can get a degree in anything these days, it seems. It’s the same with universities. They used to be for the very brightest, but now everyone attends.

Reading thru this thread, I'm reminded of something I saw recently on the hobby of baseball card collecting. It was huge once, and very profitable, too. But, like the collecting of Rock & Roll recordings and related memorabilia, it's a dying hobby. The men in the convention hall buying and selling baseball cards were all around 60 years old. "What is the future of baseball card collecting?" one of them was asked. "It has no future," he answered. "It will end with the people in this room."

He's an elusive creature. There's an interesting book called 'Remembering Bix' by Ralph Berton. He was the younger brother of Bix' drummer, Vic Berton, and got a close up look at Bix. Better yet is a four volume (2 CDs each) collection called Bix Restored. It has every known recording, from the Wolverines through Jean Goldkett, Paul Whiteman, and solo and other recordings with Frankie Trumbauer.

One thing for sure... they will be remembered for what is arguably the greatest if not the most recognizable and one of the all time Top Ten logos in history.

...and your point is that was wrong, right? Because card collecting is massive now.

I don't know about baseball cards but Pokemon card collecting is very hot and happening and breaking records in terms of value per card
