OT: RIP Lawrence Ferlinghetti at 101 - SF icon

Lawrence Ferlinghetti passed today at 101. Though not a member of the Beat Generation he was associated with it. The Beat Generation can be seen as part of the late 1950s/early 1960s SF (San Francisco) scene which led to the counter culture there in the mid 1960s which led to the original hippie era (before it became an overblown trendy thing) and the development of the SF sound - the Airplane, Quicksilver, Dead as the most well known bands, psychedelic art/posters, flowers in your hair and what have you.

The bar on the opposite side of Jack Kerouak Alley, the Vesuvio, was the site of many many meetings by politically active people into the present. Bunch of commies, atheists, and other free thinkers. I loved the place.

When I was at UVA in the 80s and worked in the Rare Book Library within Alderman Library, I discovered an entire collection of 1st Editions of all of his published books. I spent many a morning at work reading LF.

I have not read him in over 3 decades. That will change.

May the Angels take him, and may God rest his soul.

I . . . was at UVA in the 80s, too, as an English grad student, and spent considerable time in the Rare Book Room. I remember the Ferlinghetti collection. I wonder if I remember you!

Sad day for San Francisco. A pivotal figure for American literature.

The last great American poet. One of his books has my favorite title, 'Unfair Arguments With Existence.'

WOW! Likely, if you were there 86-88, I was the one who retrieved the books from the stacks when you came in to read them.

RIP, Mr. Ferlinghetti, one great poet, and cultural influencer.

Who else would change a father's shortened name back to the longer form,
adding back "hetti" to "Ferling?"
