Lawrence Ferlinghetti passed today at 101. Though not a member of the Beat Generation he was associated with it. The Beat Generation can be seen as part of the late 1950s/early 1960s SF (San Francisco) scene which led to the counter culture there in the mid 1960s which led to the original hippie era (before it became an overblown trendy thing) and the development of the SF sound - the Airplane, Quicksilver, Dead as the most well known bands, psychedelic art/posters, flowers in your hair and what have you.

The bar on the opposite side of Jack Kerouak Alley, the Vesuvio, was the site of many many meetings by politically active people into the present. Bunch of commies, atheists, and other free thinkers. I loved the place.

I have not read him in over 3 decades. That will change.

Who else would change a father's shortened name back to the longer form,
adding back "hetti" to "Ferling?"
