also i'd like to add and i don't know what the rules are in other countrys or areas but in the US i don't have a lot of money to spend on these so i go to my local library and if they don't have something i want (which is often) i can place a inter library loan then i can access thousands of library collections in the country and a couple weeks later i usally get
it not always but i get some really rare or expensive things that way thats how i got patton's screamin' & hollerin' boxset and all the stones singles collection and mono boxsets for free

Great liner notes in Revenant - Screamin and Hollerin' ...
Plus it comes with John Fahey's book on Charley .....

One crazy thing that annoyed me about the set though
was that on one of the Patton discs there are two hidden tracks

So you have to place CD in player wait for it to
recognize disc then hit reverse button and back it
up through those first two hidden tracks before can hear them ...

-1 and -2 for track numbers, thats the most hilarious thing I have ever seen, and believe me, after 40 years of looking at jamaican pressings I have seen a lot of funny things. Wonder how they actually mastered that? And what would happen if you ripped the CD? Probably number the thing properly but might end up skipping the first two tracks.

I am tempted to buy that version just to hold that mess, but I think I will go with the more budget minded version of what looks to be the same thing.

Thats a problem with a lot of these blues releases that I've noticed, a lot of repetition of the same tracks. Not unusual since they are all the tracks an artist ever cut a lot of the time, but a lot of the time you cannot tell from the cover artwork that it is a direct reissue of something else.

I see Yazoo was licensed to Shanachie for some of these releases. Thats a label I am familiar with, lots of quality stuff of all sorts from the roots on that label. I have found their mastering on some reggae releases to be a little lacking so it will be interesting to hear how they present this raw delta blues.

he could tell by the pattern of the
record surface noise & crackles which

So, strickly musical content speaking, how do you rate this Charley Patton & Associates - Complete Recordings versus the big box Screamin and Hollerin set? I see that is 7 vs 5 cds and one of those extras seem to be interviews which while interesting I could probably do without. How is the reproduction and mastering one vs the other? Reason I ask is there is a huge price difference between them and although the box looks tempting I might cheap out if I can.

thanks again for all the selections, I have been diligently looking them up on ebay and elsewhere as they are brought to my attention.

I read about the Masked Marvel bit in some book maybe Robt Johnson one I just finished. I find reading about while listening to the music being written about is very enlightening, really gives me insights I probably would not draw otherwise.

Like for instance how R Johnson was as much known for his percussion effects on the guitar as for the actual playing. And as you listen to his records you really do hear that plain as day. It was used to draw people around when playing out in public and to keep them entranced as he played. Genius stuff especially back then. Long as it didn't get ya lynched, always a not-distant threat especially to a womanizer and all around bad-ass like Johnson.

Id say your not the kinda guy that needs the complete
recordings so maybe just go for a Yazoo best of .....

I grab Patton sets when I see 'em ... The Definitive
the JSP etc .... above is the Japanese Jaspac '92 release
with real Delta like cover-art but if ya read the small print
you'll see they are using Johnny Parth's Document stuff for the set .....

Yes I realize most recordings will be coming from the same original plates, but there are always the claims of unprecedented sound restoration or newly discovered copies and all that. Often those claims are pretty specious, to my ears anyway. So my question was more like if you knew one to be superior to the other or if they were basically the same material from the same source but just with expanded liner notes and that sort of thing, especially when it comes down to more than a hundred bucks difference between them.

So you answered that question for me. The big expanded version would be nice on the shelf but essentially the more modest version is way easier on the budget while offering most of the same music from the same source.

hey maybe i'm wrong but wasn't blind lemon and willie mctell more popular in ther lifetimes and sold more records thus making it easer to find better sounding copies
and i'm a really big fan of henry thomas but i'm wondering i have "Texas Worried Blues (Complete Recorded Works 1927-1929)" and sounds pretty damn good but is it the best sounding version there is because mines from 1989 and wonder if there is better released since

and i'm also loving this thread and will try to keep it going as long as people are willing to tolerate me
