I just use a humble technics

I really need a functioning cassette deck to digitize some of my old special tapes. Note: not lame mixtapes made for your girlfriend, or mine even. And could use a nice reel to reel as well.

do what i do and check local thrift stores
couple tips though
don't get anything to plasticy get something with weight thats made in japan
open the tray and check that the rollers are not glazed and cracked
plug it in and make sure when you press play that the spindles move and have resistence if not it will probaly need a new belt which may be worth it if it's a good deck
also its a good idea to buy a speed test tape and get a frequency counter program for your computer then run the deck through the computer and set the speed with
the tape
almost all tape decks play back at the wrong speed so this to me at least is a must

thanks Prof, I know most of those things, but I think its a great idea to get a speed test tape and counter (didn't know those things even existed) and use those to calibrate the speed of the tape.

In the old days that was the biggest problem with taping: your tapes only sounded great on the machine they were recorded on, and even then over time the machines would start to stray off that mark. Goes for azimuth and other tape head adjustments too. But the tape speed was always all over the place between machines. Slightly, but enough to notice, especially if you were used to hearing something a certain way (right or wrong).

My brother had a tape deck like yours, Dandy.
It would only play TDK tapes for some reason.
At first I didn't believe him when he told me, and I sneaked into his room to play my less expensive tape. It ate it.

Speaking of my teac, it has been to service, at least once. Now I only use it now and then, playing my old cassettes. Some of my albums are on musicassette, both Pink Floyd`s The Wall and FGTH`s "Welcome to The Pleasure Dome". The sound quality might vary depending on the cassette. If you use high quality tapes for recording, the sound becomes as good as what you recorded from, be it CDs or LPs.

to MisterDDDD i use a 1977 pioneer pl-560 with a 1964 adc point 4 cart equiped with a ADC r6e 4x9 elliptical stylus and sometimes a empire 888ve original stylus or my empire 880pe with original 2x9 elliptcal that one sounds just awsome on early stones albums but the stylus is impossible to replace so only use it rarly

and to jbwelda i wouldn't touch azimuth unless you had to easy to screw up hard to fix and dosen't at least in my experince come out of alingment much
and my cassete decks are just whatever i can find at thrift stores and at a local
electronic recycle center for the most part you can pretty easly find modestly decent decent decks for cheap that way
