Joe and Kamala are two genuinely nice people and wish them well for trying to get USA back on track with getting the world in a better place health-wise and just getting on together. thumbs up

Feels a bit like we're driving it a bit towards the political side here so I'll just state my congratulations and best wishes before the thread closes!

Welcome back USA!

This thread will not be closed. Just like they did not close the US Capitol. I do not accept hooligans. I do not accept people who bully and do name calling. Any offending and inappropriate posts here will be deleted, so no need to comment on them.

I watched the inauguration ceremony yesterday. For the first time ever. Mainly because of the Jan 6 hooligan acts. I am not a political person. I love USA and I wish USA all the best. As I watched the direct broadcast on our main TV channel in Norway, I changed channels to some of the 100 or so channels I have in my TV. To the main channels of TV in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, UK, USA and so on. There were more than 30 leading channels broadcasting the inauguration live. Not even the Olympics, or World Cup in football, have that kind of international cover. It was a main event in the world yesterday.

So this thread will stay, because many do care, and many want to congratulate Biden, Harris and USA. I would rather have one such tread per year here than a lot of threads about food, pizza, or other off topic matters. After all, we do live in the real world, we can not disconnect the Rolling Stones from the real world. If USA went into a hooligan place, the Stones would not tour there, they do not tour in unsafe places.

The inauguration performances yesterday by Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Garth Brooks, Amanda Gorman, Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, John Legend and many others were made in love, not hate.

If you can't live with the fact that Biden / Harris is now in charge in USA, then so be it. Please do not post your hate opinions here. I will just delete them. I have had enough of hate posts over the years here. The would can not be built on hate and dividing people, that is not us.

I work for free to keep IORR running. I pay all the bills, there are no ads here. I spend hours every day cleaning up hateful posts and offending comments. Rest assure I will delete posts and I will also delete access. Those who do not respect democracy, those who just want to hate and do name calling, please go away.

Now I will watch Celebrating America - The Inauguration Evening Concert.

Thanks for your respect and understanding. Sure the Rolling Stones will perform live in USA one day, but before that, bury the hate, bring back the love and understanding.

Bjornulf

I watched parts of the CNN broadcasting of the evening celebrations in DC; very good. Bruce Springsteen in front of the Lincoln statue, singing by himself was very touching. The Black Pumas were also excellent as were The FooFighters. Very good celebrations. Good start Joe&Kamala!

I was really impressed with Jen Psaki the press secretary when she was answering questions yesterday. thumbs up

I had tickets and lodging etc arranged some time ago to attend the inauguration in person, but am glad yesterdays events were mostly virtual.
Was an amazing show they put on.

Pretty powerful message of unity from former Presidents of both parties last night.

Joe Biden is not a socialist. The Democratic Party has never been a socialist party. You have two parties in the USA. None of them are socialists. In a European context they are both considered right wing parties. One more than the other. Not even Bernie Sanders is a socialist by definition. But he was the first Democrat I've ever heard talking about European Social democracy. The reason Biden was nominated in the first place was to distance the party from Sander's ideas.

Interesting points, Stoneage. My understanding was that the Republican's are right of centre, whilst the Democrats are left of centre. I wasn't aware that the latter are considered right-wing in a European context. I only really follow U.K. politics, whereby the genuine left and right are on the fringes. Everything is fairly central. The exception being Corbyn, who could've really pushed Labour to the far left if he'd been afforded more time.

Rbk, globalism is a liberal idea. Not a socialist dito. More precisely neoliberal. Neoliberalism is a right wing political ideology.

The "centre" is different in different countries. In social democratic (not to be confused with socialist in any way) countries like the Nordic countries, Biden is considered a hard-boiled conservative.

In Norway we have a conservative government, which would probably be placed left of centre in the UK smiling smiley

Biden is certainly a lot more conservative than most of the ruling parties in Europe. Trump, and many of his fans, did call Biden a communist, which is of course just false political propaganda.

I think what the U.S.A. needs after Trump, is someone with good old common sense. Hopefully, Biden will provide this to the people of America.

One of the most alarming claims to me is that Democrats are plotting Muslim and/or Socialism in America. The Republicans have been accused of ridiculous notions as well. I'm thinking many years later none of this happens and it's business as usual. My two cents. I'm hopeful there's peace in the White House and we can get on with it.

exactly...we don't really have a "center" in the US.

we have 2 parties - The Right and Left-of-The-Right.

(IMO)

staying on topic of the thread: same as I said 4 years ago...I don't like either of the candidates (at all), but somebody had to win, so congratulations to that person..

Kamala Harris is the first woman VP. I think the US is behind most of Europe in putting woman in high government positions. Please advise on this.
