Wow, I never knew that. Artistic licence indeed - Neil was closer to Florida than Northern Ontario, practically speaking. IMO, you’re a southerner if you don’t live north of the Wawa goose.

But sticking with Canuck lyricists, the second verse of ‘Suzanne’ usually gives me goosebumps...

Agree with you Swayed, Leonard’s lyrics are an abundance of riches and Suzanne is a diamond. But you’ve rather traumatized me with this post - the only time I was ever on a flight that had to abort a landing was coming into Wawa from Hornepayne...bad storm, broke through the clouds about 10 feet over the runway and immediately went into the steepest climb I’ve ever experienced. (And, good grief, how do you know Wawa?) grinning smiley

My mother is from Wawa so I passed many a lonely hour in the north country as a boy. And now that you mention it, yeah, flying in winter in one of those 12-seat deathtraps was always a harrowing rollercoaster ride out of hell. Hornepayne? Now that’s the true Canadian North.

Is your name Donna? I’d guess not but you probably know this one by The Kings…

Hey Judy, get Trudy
You said to call you up if I was feeling moody
Hey little Donna, ahh, still wanna
You said to ring you up when I was in Toronto

It would be a shame not to include at least a few from John Prine.

Sam Stone
There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose/Little pitchers have big ears
Don't stop to count the years/Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

and from: In Spite of Ourselves, Iris DeMent - Vocal
He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays/I caught him once sniffin' my undies
He ain't real sharp/But he gets things done/He drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby, I'm his honey/ I'm never gonna let him go.

Sadly, no, and nobody writes about Annie except John Denver. But local heroes The Tragically Hip gave a nice shout out to Toronto in their song Bobcaygeon, referring to the Horseshoe Tavern where they played quite a bit...

That night in Toronto
With its checkerboard floors...

Marianne Faithfull, Ballad of Lucy Jordan:

At the age of thirty-seven
She realised she'd never
Ride through Paris in a sports car
With the warm wind in her hair

True. But that one definitely isn’t about me. grinning smiley

Fitting for today - Hymn to Her, written by Meg Keene and recorded by The Pretenders:

And she will always carry on
Something is lost
But something is found
They will keep on speaking her name
Somethings change
Some stay the same

There were six men in Birmingham
In Guildford there's four
That were picked up and tortured
And framed by the law
And the filth got promotion
But they're still doing time
For being Irish in the wrong place
And at the wrong time

In Ireland they'll put you away in the Maze
In England they'll keep you for several long days
God help you if ever you're caught on these shores
And the coppers need someone
And they walk through that door

You'll be counting years
First five, then ten
Growing old in a lonely hell
Round the yard and the stinking cell
From wall to wall, and back again

A curse on the judges, the coppers and screws
Who tortured the innocent, wrongly accused,
For the price of promotion
And justice to sell
May the judged be their judges when they rot down in hell

You'll be counting years
First five, then ten
Growing old in a lonely hell
Round the yard and lousy cell
From wall to wall, and back again

May the whores of the empire lie awake in their beds
And sweat as they count out the sins on their heads
While over in Ireland eight more men lie dead
Kicked down and shot in the back of the head

You'll be counting years
First five, then ten
Growing old in a freezing hell
Round the yard and the lousy cell
From wall and back again
