Lyrics that grab you
Posted by: SomeTorontoGirl ()

Stones or other - are there any lines that, for you, are so perfect or powerful or quirky or revelatory that they make a song? A few for me:

Stones, Torn and Frayed - As long as the guitar plays it will steal your heart away...

Elvis Costello, Watching the Detectives: She was filing her nails while they were dragging the lake...

Elvis again, Indoor Fireworks: I’ll build a bonfire of my dreams and burn a broken effigy of me and you...

Tragically Hip, Bobcaygeon: It was in Bobcaygeon I saw the constellations reveal themselves one star at a time...

and Stones, LSTNT: You know I’m smiling baby!

Bob Dylan - She Belongs to me.
You will start out standing/Proud to steal her anything she sees
But you will wind up peeking through her keyhole/Down upon your knees.

Joni Mitchell - Come in from the Cold.
Back in 1957/We had to dance a foot apart/And they hawk-eyed us from the sidelines
Holding their rulers without a heart.

Jackson Browne - These Days ( Written when he was just 16 yrs.)
These days I sit on corner stones/And count the time in quarter tones to ten my friend/Don't confront me with my failures/I had not forgotten them.

And on a somewhat lighter note...

Leonard Cohen - Closing Time
And my very sweet companion/She's the angel of compassion/She's rubbing half the world against her thigh.

Jagger - The Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man
Here comes the bus, uh oh/Uh, I thought I had a dime, where's my dime?

Time waits for no one, and he won't wait for me

Whenever I hear that line, I feel connected to my childhood and farm life.

"Some people got no choice they can never find a voice that they can talk with and truly call their own, so the first thing that they see that allows them the right to be, why they follow it; it's called 'bad luck' " Lou Reed "Street Hassle" (my punctuation).

Jackson Browne has a number of good examples. "Fountain Of Sorrow" and "The Pretender" to name 2 others.

For sure, wise beyond his years. Here's a few more that come to mind ranging from the tragic to just plain silly.

Graham Parker - You Can't be too Strong
Did they tear it out with talons of steel/And give you a shot, so that you wouldn't feel? And washed it away as if it wasn't real?

Zappa - Don't Eat the Yellow Snow
Watch out where the huskies go/And don't you eat that yellow snow!

Thats what the Stones were famous and noted for back from around Satisfaction up to about Let It Bleed. LIB is where they got more serious about content instead of making fun of culture on stuff like Mothers Little Helper. Personally Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In the Shadows, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Mothers Little Helper and a few others from around then rank in the top flights of song writing in my book, cultural observation at its best.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

SOUNDS OF SILENCE

And
It's a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtain lace
And shadows wash the room.

THE DANGLING CONVERSATION - SIMON & GARFUNKEL

Doesn't have a point of view
Knows not where he's going to
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

NOWHERE MAN - BEATLES (LENNON)

I hear you talking when I'm on the street
Your mouth don't move but I can hear you speak

ROCKS OFF - ROLLING STONES

You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes

FOUNTAIN OF SORROW - JACKSON BROWNE

We watch the shows, we watch the stars
On videos for hours and hours
We hardly need to use our ears
How music changes through the years

RADIO GA GA - QUEEN

"Take all the pain...It's yours anyway"

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds!
Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them can stop the time

How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs

“I met a gin-soaked bar room queen in Memphis...”

I still think it is one of the best lyrics ever. In 10 words you are transported into another world Springsteen-style.
