BLACK AND BLUE has a very underrated album cover. Very much a callback to their early-mid 60's albums.

Guy Peellaert's original version of the rear cover was the same as the front but with the crowd gone and only a single piece of girl’s undergarment remaining on the stairs, a detail that was censored and that never made it onto the final back sleeve.

ENGLAND'S NEWEST HITMAKERS
THE ROLLING STONES

The cover of their first LP always was and still is the best to me.

Agreed. However, I do really feel that the 'England's Newest Hitmakers' text ruins the image.

The UK version left the title and band name off but used the same photo.

It's the photo I love.
It totally fits and shows their attitude from back then.
Interesting to learn that the UK version left the text out.

A premier album with no title or band name was, in the Stones tradition, quite controversial at the time-although the idea is attributed to Andrew Loog Oldham. London (the US arm of Decca) would not go for it and insisted on the band's name and a title

Sticky Fingers -- great cover, but more of an Andy Warhol project than about the Stones.
Exile on Main Street -- again, great cover, but it's about Robert Frank.

Top 5

Exile on Main Street
It's Only Rock and Roll
Some Girls
Beggar's Banquet
Get Yer Ya Yas Out
Honorable mentions: December's Children/Out of our Heads UK, Between the Buttons, Tattoo You

Average 5

Emotional Rescue
Aftermath
Goats Head Soup
Stripped
Undercover

Bottom 5

Voodoo Lounge
Bigger Bang
Grrr
Dirty Work
Blue and Lonesome (how lazy can you be.....just the tongue?)

Dishonorable Mention: Black and Blue...I truly don't understand the love for this cover. Keith breathing in Mick's ear with Bill seemingly thinking "just take the picture already"

I think the "censored" Beggars Banquet cover released in the U.S. that looks like am RSVP card is actually pretty cool. My favorites are exile and some girls. They both have a similar concept.

Yes, the KISS emblem. That's what I expected. Come on, man. It's lazy. They could have had a smattering of old blues albums on a table or something. Just putting your logo on there lacks imagination.

It's their least inventive LP cover. It makes DIRTY WORK, as horrific as it is, look smart - at least they were being trendy modern.

I thought blues album = blue! Obviously. So then (the record company) sent me a blue, and it was all kind of grey and wishy washy. I said No, it's got to be bright, really blue, electric blue. So that's why we came up with that color. I think it works.

It's fair to say, based on that quote, that Jagger is mostly responsible for the album cover but UMe had an asleep at the wheel hand in it. Something like Keith playing Little Walter's Blue And Lonesome from UNDER THE INFLUENCE would've been much more appropriate. Or something like this even.

I am a definite fan of the Blue & Lonesome cover.

If you're going to use just the tongue on a cover, this one works nicely.
From the minute I saw the B&L tongue shirt Mick was wearing at Desert Trip, knew I had to have it as well. (still sitting on a couple unopened ones cool smiley)

Like how the blue fades into the red, as well as the box set version, with red spotlight.

Blue & Lonesome is elegant in it's simplicity and use of the iconic logo.

Compare that to the Sucking in the 70s cover, where the tongue was affixed to the plastic wrap. Ridiculous.

Bullshit? Really? It's an opinion, take it easy. Putting your logo on the cover, albeit a great logo, a logo that stands out and a logo I love is simply lazy....I can't see how that's not obvious, but that's my opinion. It's like the artwork was due that morning and they just said f*** it, let's just put the logo on there.

How many times has a pile of blues records been used as an album cover by the Stones? Exactly ZERO. I'm thinking like the array they displayed in the Edith Grove setup during 'Exhibitionism' would have been cool. The tongue? They already did it with Licks, and in that case at least the album was called Licks.....made more sense.

Yes, that's all I'm saying. It's not inventive and it lacks imagination. The whole album kind of came out of organic jamming, love of blues....and the cover comes out of easy marketing, unfortunately. Show the stuff you love, if not old blues records then maybe old scattered pictures of the artists.
