The Doors by a mile

Best: Beach Boys, at least in the US. Not so sure about worldwide impact, where The Doors have a strong case.

For a period in the 60's, the Beach Boys, here, were on close to the same level as the Beatles; and they were more impactful and popular than the Stones. My choice is based on best, as in most influential/liked/impactful/popular; not my personal favorites.

The Beach Boys were never my favorite US band. At different times several other bands mentioned here were my US favorites for a period. But I only remember two bands ever being clearly my overall favorite band: The Beatles for a relatively short period through mid 1965 and The Rolling Stones from then on.

Inside the US, Bruce/E Street would come in second, if they qualify? I've read all the the comments and think they qualify, but I respect those who think they should not qualify.

The Grateful Dead from let's say old school....From the Modern era i would go with The Pixies even the Pixies have been around more or less for 35 Years!

No American band ever came close to this, imho.

They kind of did that, the version in the '98 box has a couple of previously unreleased songs, and others appeared on the Lost Crowes set.

North American (US/CA) - Bob Dylan and the Band
Central American - Santana (Carlos is US based/Mexican born)
South American - Joao Gilberto

I tend to agree though Mike Love is such an @ss; I'd definitely put them in the top 3 with CCR and the Allman Bros.

With elite artists like Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix (yes, I know The Experience was 2/3 European, but we know where 99% of the talent was), it seems that the US could be in a better position to challenge British rock bands, if they (Bob, Chuck and Jimi) were included. Yes, I know, Bob Dylan isn’t a band. That said, here are some of my favorite US rock bands who could be considered amongst the best:

Ramones
Grateful Dead
Allman Bros (w/ Duane)
Tool (best active rock drummer)
Nirvana
Aerosmith (70’s)
Metallica (love their 80’s stuff)
Beach Boys
CCR
Velvet Underground
Stooges

I don’t like Elvis, The Doors, The Eagles…

Its funny how people are listing the top selling and most popular USA bands. But you can walk into any club in lets say New Orleans and see bands so good that they blow any of the bands mentioned away. Popular doesn't make a band great.
Are we talking about songs, musicianship how a band can improvise live? Somebody just mentioned The Beach Boys. Well thank The Wrecking Crew for that. I hope people would just say why they mention a band.

Very true, it seemed after the first few albums Brian Wilson took all his ideas and worked with them to create the albums and the rest of the band then reassembled to tour in support of the album.

Great band that suffered from poor marketing.

The documentary thst came out about them a few years ago was very good.

I'm not sure they'd qualify as one of the greatest American bands but should not be overlooked nonetheless.

ToTo, although their catalogue is larger than rock. Van Halen very good as well.
ZZ Top, genuine oldschool.

Byrds are #1. They engaged with The Stones. 8 Miles High was ground breaking
Doors are #2 -- They had an extended career. Jim of course, Ray never gets enough credit, Robbie's jazz guitar on Light My Fire.
Talking Heads get honorable mention for being super hot and super good for about 4 years. 1980 to 1984

I'd say Aerosmith, for their longevity. The Doors and Nirvana were only active a few years. Aerosmith even have their own ride at Disneyland, so they must be the biggest band.

It's a very subjective observation.

Was Nirvana a rock band? They certainly rocked.

Urge Overkill was (is, or whatever).

Cheap Trick.

Does the E Street Band count?

What about Walt Mink?

The Ramones...? I may be wrong but I don't think they considered themselves that. But they certainly rocked.


Pearl Jam.

Maybe even the Stone Temple Pilots for a little bit.

Soundgarden. Love 'em... but were they a rock band? Not really. Hard rock. Metal Etc.


Chuck Berry was the ultimate rock band.

So was Hank Williams. And Muddy Waters. Howlin' Wolf. Little Walter.


Overall, though... all the influences... and what projected into the future:
