What is the Greatest American Rock Band of All Time? The Answer is Not as Easy as You Think…

At first, upon reading this, I surely thought there’d be a definitive answer, but when I started to think, I found myself scraping the bottom of the barrel – what American band can hold up against the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the Stones? The answer is not as clear as you think, and some names may surprise you. Discounting singer/songwriter driven bands (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band) in consideration for groups that contained individual personalities coming together to create, among popular answers were the Ramones, Guns n’ Roses, The Eagles… And after a few weeks of digesting this question, we’ve come down to a few solid names that could even hold a candle up to those British bands.

It feels to me, the more names are up on the thread, the less convincing it gets...

How many of them bands mentioned so far do actually equal The Beatles or The Rolling Stones for instance in their musical achievement, historical significance or contribution to culture? Sonic Youth? Nirvana? What a joke. I saw SY many times and Nirvana once, yes I like them, but hailing them as the “best American bands”, the equivalents to The Beatles and The Stones, is just ridiculous. Even The Doors.

As someone suggests upthread, many people put their favorites rather than the best. I picked Bruce, the Dead and The Beach Boys but they aren’t necessarily my personal favorites.

He's both, I think Check out their former album, "That Santa Fe Channel" as well. Great stuff!

He's both, I think Check out their former album, "That Santa Fe Channel" as well. Great stuff!

It seems that they have released three studio albums and one live album.

Some say Van Halen, but I don’t really listen to them.

I also like the Flamin' Groovies, but they didn't make many records.

Lots of great bands but I go for Grateful Dead or The Doors. ZZ Top ain't bad either (especially the pre-Eliminator period).

“I saw Elvis on TV and when I first saw Elvis, I was 9 but I was a little young, tried to play the guitar but it didn’t work out, I put it away.

I ran to the bowling alley, ran down a long neon-lit aisle, down the bowling alley into the bowling alley. Ran to the phone booth,
got in the phone booth and immediately called my girl and asked ‘Have you heard this band called The Beatles?’
After that, it was nothing but rock ‘n’ roll and guitars.”

From same article, he told the BBC in 2016 that: "(‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’) was another song that changed the course of my life.
It was a very raucous sounding record when it came out of the radio. It really was the song that inspired me to play rock and roll music –
to get a small band and start doing some small gigs around town. It was life-changing. It’s still a beautiful record".

And from Iggy (2012):

"When I was in my early teens, I’d listen to the Top 40 and I would wait for the one Beatles song that the radio station would play;
this engendered an incredibly emotional reaction, almost like a drug compulsion – waiting for that Beatles song was something I had to have, it was irresistible".



Seems safe to say that without the Beatles, there might not be Springsteen/E Street Band or Iggy and the Stooges - at least not the same huge stars they eventually became.
