Jefferson Airplane or Grateful Dead.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers would have to be mentioned in there too.

Oh, Little Feat.

The Doobie Brothers – Michael McDonald is a God. Get on your knees and pray!

REM – Haven’t a clue what Stipe is singing in Pretty Persuasion but it sure sounds perty.

The Flying Burrito Brothers – Dylan said Palace of Sin was his favorite record of 69. Good enough for me. (And a true Stones fan gets Gram onto this list with either this band or The Byrds.)

The Doors – But only when I was a teenager If they’d fired Manzarek and brought in Billy Preston on keyboards I might still be a fan. Light My Fire is begging for a funkier intro.

Bread – Yeah, their music is a bit soggy but I’m not ashamed to admit I love all 13 of their hits…and let’s not forget ‘Goodbye Girl.’ F*ck Yeah!!!

I’m not great at ranking anything, but I suppose the Beach Boys must be near the top of the list.
If the Jimi Hendrix Experience is allowed with two Brits, then that would be in the conversation obviously.

As two of the members are British and they formed in London, I would argue, correctly, that they were not an American band. They’re a London band, that counted an American as a member.

So we get to lay claim to Paul McCartney & Wings?
Then they get my vote. Great band winking smiley

LOL I understand your sentiment. But my gut feeling tells me The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Paul McCartney & Wings are both English bands no matter what. What are Derek & The Dominoes then? An English-American band, that is. Can’t explain logically but it depends on each member’s historical/musical background, where and when they found fame first etc...

My choices:
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (they make their presence felt strongly as a band to me)
Grateful Dead
The Beach Boys

Longevity, popularity and originality are big factors here, among others. Influential as they are, The Doors and The Velvet Underground are tad too short in their musical career to call them the greatest IMHO. Also a bit acquired taste, both of them — especially VU. The Band? Again, they are a Canadian-American band.

The Band and Little Feat are both solid choices.

They both represent something essentially American. Los Lobos, The Blasters, Steve Earle and The Dukes share a certain rootsy Americana, as did the Flying Burrito Brothers. The New Riders Of The Purple Sage are another band in this vein.

Some other great and uniquely American bands not mentioned include the Buffalo Springfield, The Mothers Of Invention, Parliament-Funkadelic, The New York Dolls, Devo, Meat Puppets,The Meters and Canned Heat.

The J. Geils Band
The Byrds
The Jayhawks
The Allman Brothers

Even the poorest work of the (relatively) consistent work of these bands still sounds fresh today, imo (with the exception of the last J. Geils Band-album without Wolf - that one is a stinker).

I like some of the hard rock bands, too, but imo they haven't been able to make more than two or three great records (Aerosmith, Kiss, Alice Cooper etc).

I don't count solo acts with a backing band (Bruce, Petty etc) as bands.

I haven't really listened to them. Something about their sound that never made me go discover them. Maybe I should?

Not on my recommendation alone. In case, look for the evaluation from other persons as well.

Aerosmith is a band. It's not "Steven Tyler & The Aerosmiths. Alice Cooper was a band. Then Vincent took the name Alice and went solo.

Side note and perhaps future topic.
Craziest thing you've seen (performer related) at a concert.

Saw Alice in Vancouver '75, was near the rail, when in the middle of a song as he was climbing into a large toy box .. it tipped and he ended up in the crowd.
Hit the rail, broke a bunch of ribs, concussion etc.
Landed right in front of me, was unbelievable how savage some in the crowd were- tearing at his clothes etc.

After a brief intermission where the opener (Suzi Quatro) came back out for a number, he returned, head wrapped in a blood soaked towel, and did "Only Women Bleed".
Was awesome cool smiley

I hear ya and respect your view. In my view, “Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers” just happens to be the “name” of the group that includes Tench, Campbell, etc.
