IMO, the stones had a very personal approach to punk, mixing it with rock and roll. Which is the most punky song they made?
IMO, WHERE THE BOYS GO..
THOUGHTS?

Yes, Respectable, Lies and When The Whip Comes Down are punk style songs, but punk was just as much a fashion movement as a music genre. I know Jagger has always liked to follow trends, but I don't think the Stones ever really attempted to embrace punk fully and thank goodness for that. Punk had some fine moments with The Sex Pistols, The early Clash and so on, but there was so much rubbish too.

My favourite punk era band is The Jam. Like The Stones Some Girls record, some of they're output sounded a little punky, but they were'nt punks at all. No, they were modernists and all the better for it.

The 69 live version of Street Fighting man had kind of a punkish agression to it judging from Ya's Ya's and the 69 boots, much more distorted then the live versions that followed, not sure if it was intednded to be but it is great!

some songs sound a little punkish. like respectable and streetfighting man. but they never tied to be real punks because they know most people would laugh at them.
you can´t be a punk and drive a RR or a ferrari, right? but i think ron supported some punk-bands in the 70s on stage for an encore. Keef doesn´t seem to be interested in political issues . but what about sir mick?

Yeah, ok, got it. It´s the sound and the feeling - all before punk was defined. One could also mention the early Who and Kinks stuff when talking about punk influences before punk.

Leonard is right. Just listen to "Get Off Of My Cloud/19th Nervous Breakdown" from the Paris 1966 broadcast and you know who invited punk!

Much off the stuff they've recorded 1977/78 - including "Summer Romance" you can count as punk, too! And parts of the 1978 Tour set is sheer punk!!!! Just listen to "Shattered/Respectable" from Fort Worth.....

The live version of Let It Rock? Other than that not much really counts.

Yes, Leonard is correct. The Stones were playing punk before way before it ever became a movement. GOOMC, She Said Yeah, Route 66, I Wanna Be Your Man (especially that hair-raising guitar solo!), Susie Q, Come On, Off The Hook, 19th Nervous Breakdown, etc. come immediately to mind.

In w way yes but Velvet Underground and later Iggy laid the real ground for punk culture. Keith was punk in many ways. Saying he hated punk is punk. He and Lou Reed and of course Brian were punks.

I agree about Lou Reed and Iggy laying down the foundations for punk culture, especially Iggy, but Brian Jones? Well, if this is true, he's certainly the most well groomed punk I've ever seen!

Yeha i know Brian wasnt really punk he was too real for that culture he was rock n roll mixed with total popcraziness and real magic depths. Jim Morrison wasnt punk either even if he was an idol for many punks.

I would definitely have to say She Said Yeah as well as early live versions of Get Off Of My Cloud and even Satisfaction. Punk before punk even reared it's ugly head! lol smiling smiley

"It's alright" from OOOH feels like a 70s punk song.
