Question about Just my Imagination Hampton
Date: November 11, 2020 12:50

I watched again this song. I think this is one of the peaks of stones live renditions.

Its length is particularly long compared to others in the same tour.

Does the band went by the flow or these kind of "jam"/improvisation hides a prior rehearsal o a prior agreement so to speak? what do you think?

Agree, it's one of the most wonderful moments in Stones history. Is it such a big difference in length compared to other versions played during that autumn and later in the summer of '82?

Interesting! Gotta put on the Seattle and Leeds shows and compare! Might be a flash of the moment, I remember Mick talking to Keith or Ronnie while the camera zooms him in, "Oi lads let's roll for another 2 minutes!!smileys with beer

It was the last song I wanted to hear on the Some Girls album and on their tour in 82. It seemed to be endless, spezially live. Alan Bangs, who interviewed MJ and KR in that year for BFBS and WDR Radio thought and sad the same. I remember that very well. When I listen to it now, I love it. It got better and better in those years, like a good wine. Or maybe I got wiser...

I prefer the guitar driven rock version from the 78 tour.

And to Ernie Watts! It really is a fantastic jam between the four of them, a true highlight for Bill Wyman, and I do think that Ernie Watts injected something special into the song. He made the call and response more interesting, and it inspired Ron and Keith.

Fantastic.

I've always enjoyed this version of imagination and Whip from the same night with Bill's amazing bass lines. We had to live with the PPV audio and video for almost 8 years until Steel Wheels, and I played it more than any Stones show before or since.

I attended 14 shows in 1981 including both Hampton gigs. As the set list became pretty frozen over the final month, it's interesting to note that the Hampton show in total was about 25-30 minutes longer than others with the same set list. Longer jams on several tunes account for this. Let Me Go was extended nicely with Mick running around the entire arena ramp while the guitars rocked.

I don't disagree with that. However, the foundation he wails away on is nothing but fantastic, though.

The best ever version is Hampton II from the 19th.
It was on Wolfgang´s Vault and is the basic track for
the shortened Still Life version. No editing on vocals/
guitars. Pure magic!

The net day's rendition is even longer and the band deemed it good enough to be included on "Still Life" (with some cuts though). Jagger is on another planet at the end of it. grinning smiley

I'd say Sonny Rollins did that, but Ernie was great, too.

I actually like the edited, shorter Still Life version.

So

1981.09.25 John F. Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia length 6:06

1981 Hampton length 9:47

1982.06.14 Hippodrome d'Auteuil, Paris length 9:11

1982 Leeds show length 9:09

How long was the unedited Hampton II (The version they edited for Still Life)? I suspect it wasn't any shorter.

9:47 is the length from the vault Hampton CD.

To be precise the song ends 30 secs earlier, and the rest is the introduction to Twenty Flight Rock

One of my favorite moments in Stones history, could have gone on forever.
One can only dream what Think I'm Going Mad could have sounded like with that line-up (especially Ernie).

Then it's just about as long as Hampton II (the unedited Still Life-version).

I also love the YCAGWYW instrumental parts in Hampton !
It's maybe the closest of Slave live rendition we could get.

In the Stones latter days, the maybe only spot for longer version is Midnight Rambler ?

The best sax solo on any Stone's record is Mel Collins on Miss You, IMO.

Imagination and YCAGWYW from Hampton are just stunning, long, soulful, melodic and funky. The Stones at the very peak of their powers.

Such a shame that Beast of Burden is marred by Bill's out of tune bass (string)...

Mel is great, just like Sandborne is on Pretty Beat Up.

But none of them could have played the stuff on Slave.
