that's this one, right? if i followed Mathijs right on that Telecaster thread (thank you Mathijs!),
Keith used it in the studio in 77/78 and on the 78 tour, but it hasn't been sighted since then.

I LOVE it when sssoul starts a thread on Keith because we are always guaranteed some great photos. Most Stones hardcores immediately recognize every photo ans know which tour/concert to place it. So it's always a gas when something brand new comes along. I too had not seen Keith in the 79 Knebworth show. I would have rememeberd that Tux shirt. Thanks sssoul.

Yep, that's the Newman Jones Telecaster. By the way, I did see that Tele once more: at the opening club show of the 1981 tour (what's it called, the Cave or something). There's for example the Seattle 1981 DVD, and on the back a shot of this club show with Keith playing this Tele is pictured.

The 1979 pictures indeed show the Newman Jones guitar as blue printed in the book. The 1973 pictures also is a Newman Jones guitar, with a PAF at the bridge and a P90 in the neck position.

Sir Morgan's Cove (in Worcester, Massachusetts) was the venue,
and the Stones were booked as The Cockroaches.

that guitar has a Newman-Jonesish shape to it, but ... well, moving right along!
here are a few more of Keith's custom jobs, starting with a couple made by Doug Young/Doby.
Blue Lena's site - [members.tripod.com] - describes the one in the first two photos as
"a solidbody double-cutaway with bird's-eye maple body & fingerboard, one-piece maple neck, gold in color, made by Doug Young/Doby Guitars".

then there's this "Doby solidbody single-cutaway of curly maple [with] ebony fingerboard, [which] was a gift to Keith & Patti from Doug Young".
seems like it's meant to be vaguely reminiscent of Keith's mid-70s Zemaitis; i wonder if he's used it for anything but photo sessions ...

Aha! Cerwin-Vega cabinets! The 2 photos from the Sir Morgan's Cove gig
posted by with ssoul show them playing Boogies throgh Cerwin-Vega cabinets.
A while ago, I posted that they used Electro-Voice speakers with Boogie heads
during the first few gigs of the tour, and I said I remember having a brouchure
listing the equipment (I remember it was on bright pink paper). Anyway, I was
mistaken as it was Cerwin-Vega cabinets that were used. Indeed, the studioowner
web site has a few photos of them rehearsing with this same setup.
They may have used this setup for the first few gigs and then switched
to Boogie cabinets, or probably these were just used for rehearsals and this
one-off gig.

we all know Keith's gone-but-not-forgotten Zemaitis so well that i didn't bother posting any photos of it,
but i just came across one that i find real interesting - i associate that guitar so much with 75/76 that it surprised me to see it in 78.

this guitar is said to have perished in a fire, and it's often stated that it was a fire at Redlands -
but maybe it's more likely that it happened in the september 78 fire at the house Keith was renting in LA?
here's a quote about that from Mark Paytress's book The Rolling Stones Off the Record:

SEPTEMBER 1978
Keith's domestic situation is hardly any more secure when the Hollywood house he has been renting in Laurel Canyon burns down.
Keith: "I'm in the bedroom with the flavour of the month, my girlfriend of the hour. I wake up and the room's full of smoke.
I open the door to the bedroom and I'm looking at a fireball rushing down the corridor towards the oxygen ... and me!
There's the two of us stark naked. Half the house is already destroyed, the roof is falling in on us but we've managed to get through -
with a few burns here and there - to the swimming pool ... Stark @#$%& bollock naked with this blonde, bless her heart,
good girl, solid gold, saying to me: 'Do something.' And I said: 'What do you want me to do - piss on it?'"

it seems like Keith must not have used the Zemaitis much on the 78 tour -
otherwise i think i'd have seen more photos of it - so does anyone know what he did use it for then? and/or what really happened to it, and when?

so i watched the 78 Fort Worth footage, and incomplete as it is, Ronnie's using that guitar there only in two numbers:
When the Whip Comes Down (which this photo obviously isn't) and Beast of Burden (ditto) -
so ... it's a mystery. have some popcorn.

The brown Zemaitis was only used on Brown Sugar for the '78 tour.
I remeber him bringing it out at Anaheim for that number only.
All other 5-string stuff was Telecasters. The video from New orleans
shows the same. Plus boots from that tour, yuo can really tell the difference in tone. Same goes for that photo. Brown Sugar was the next to last number,
and judging from the sweat, no capo, and Ronnie using his Zemaitis, it's
Brown Sugar. I'm pretty sure that fire in which this Zemaitis was lost
was here in LA, as I don't recall it on any New Barbarian shows,
and rehearsals for that tour were done mostly out here in LA, early to mid 1979.
I've played a few hand-made Zemaitis guitars, and they're absolutely stunning.
Really incredible.
