Well, Ginger Baker is a better drummer than both of those. How about someone like Hal Blaine? He was more technically gifted than most. Keith Moon is probably my favourite drummer, though.

Absolutely agree with you, Spud!
But just for the sake of fun, some critics hammer on time keeping and other tachnical skills, but that makes it food for highly skilled experts to judge.
To me it's not about "best" drummers ( how to compair great jazz/blues drummers with rock/punk drummers confused smiley) but about "unique" drummers.
And there Keith Moon solidly tops the list. His trademark Who drumming stands way above any other drummer input to any respectieve band. I never liked "freak" drummers who want to show off how fast, varied, loud, etc. they can be. When you're in a band, be part of it. Keit Moon's drumming was music with the music and had a unique marking within the Who songs.

Putting Ringo ahead of Buddy Rich had to have been someone's idea of a joke.

Ginger Baker's drumming is what I liked best.
Not saying he was The Best (though I think so smoking smiley).
Just what I liked best.

I liked Baker's style myself. Total a hole but great drummer. Fantastic influences from Africa well incorporated into his style.

That list even mention Sly Dunbar, Style Scott, Horsemouth Wallace, Winston Grennan or Santa Davis? Benbow Creary?

Probably not or maybe Dunbar? All of them far superior to most rock drummers in my book.

Most rock drummers are pure bashers, most have no real style at all if you ask me. Keith Moon and Ginger Baker, maybe Charlie Watts, transcend all that but thats why they stand out from the (mediocre for the most part) rock and roll pack.

Right!

What a joke. Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa should be at the top of the list. But to compare rock drummers to jazz drummers is like comparing house painters to the Rembrandts of the world. Yes, they’re all painters, but . . .

Hal Blaine could play better than most of these guys with both hands tied behind his back. Keith Moon? Give me a f'n break. Now I'm in a bad mood.

It's worrying that even ONE person in the world finds Dave Grohl a superior drummer to Jack DeJohnette!

People listen with their eyes instead of their ears. Thats the problem with these critics.

Was it John who (jokingly?) said Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles?

Just like the recent RS poll about the greatest albums of all time. Didn't a Joni Mitchell album rank higher than any Beatles or Stones albums?
Regardless of the drummers rankings, who are some drummers that were missed? One I was looking for is Tommy Aldridge. Black Oak Arkansas, Pat Travers Band, Ozzy, Whitesnake. A number of Youtube vids with him both in concert and at drum clinics.
Also, drummers like Bun E Carlos from Cheap Trick or Bobby Elliot of The Hollies. Both are in the same vein as a Phil Rudd or even Charlie. No flashy drum solos but keep a steady beat.

These are lean times for music journalists, and they're grasping around with arbitrary lists of whatnot.

Ultimate Classic Rock has had lists recently, like: '49 Rock Stars Flipping You Off', and '36 Rock Star Moments on Family Guy'.

And yeah, Stewart Copeland is a great drummer, but I think he'd be mortified to be ahead of people like Elvin Jones and Buddy Rich.

Tony Allen should be much higher on the list, esoecially considering his influence on many of the drummers ranked higher than him and inventing a whole style basically by himself!

Buddy Rich
Billy Cobham
Terry Bozzio

and the rest.

No. Urban myth. A joke made by comedian Jasper Carrot. Lennon never said anything like that.
