Japan 1973 (cancelled at the last minute) - 1990

Mick Jagger’s announcement on February 14, 1990, the first night in Tokyo: “Watashitachi wa Nihon ni kuru no wo nagaku machimashita (translation: We have been waiting for long before coming to Japan).”smileys with beer

What a weird thing to say since he toured Japan just 2 years earlier

Some confusion going on here. The Stones didn't tour Japan in 1988, it was a solo tour by Mick Jagger. Also Ron Wood "did" Japan that year and negotiations/high level contacts made it possible for the Rolling Stones to tour Japan in 1990 for the first time ever! It was a unique event, because they performed in the Tokyo Dome 10 times over some two weeks. Apparently there had been tickets request surpassing the 2 million, but "only" half a million were rewarded. A nicely decorated excuse "hagaki" was made to apologize to the other million and half requesters.
The 1973 refusal came with a late Winter tour around south-east Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii, followed by an extensive Autumn tour in Europe that year.
Personally I saw announcements for 1975 in Tokyo, nothing happened ...

Afghanistan : 1962-2020
Albania : 1962-2020.

Do the boys have a problem with countries that start with an "A"?

That’s a good chunk of time between gigs...

They haven't played Northern Ireland since 1965!!! At least the South has had a few shows since then. I was there in 2018.

Anywhere on the island of Ireland is Ireland. North, South, East, West. smiling smiley

Okay, since 1965 no shows anywhere on the island outside Dublin or Slane Castle. Last show in Belfast was 1965. I’m well aware of the issues of the place, being from West Central Scotland. I also have a good friend of nearly 35 years in Belfast I speak to often. He’s of the blue hue but has both passports with no hang ups about it at all thumbs up. Always enjoy visiting anywhere on the island.

You mean they totally refused to play in Spain while the country was under the dictatorship of Franco. They first played there in 76 a year after the old fart died.
A really commendable boycott! thumbs up

I can't help thinking what a waste this long break between 1982 and 1989 was. I don't think that did them any good at all. And I don't buy Jagger's version that the band was
in such a bad state they couldn't even manage to cross the street. And I would have swapped all Jagger's solo albums for one tour, however ragged one, in the mid eighties.

Charlie dozed off in the middle of a take during the DW sessions. (Keith jokingly told him "hey that's the kind of think I used to do!").
Compare that to the 77/78 sessions where Charlie sat on the drum stool ready to play for 18 hours straight (as again reported by Keith).

And look at Charlie's unshaven face at the very end of the "She Was Hot". Obviously he already had "problems" by 82/83.

Okey, a 3 months detox for Charlie and, perhaps, Ronnie could have, maybe, solved the problem then? Jagger and Richards seemed to be doing alright at the time.

At the time, the 40 licks tour felt like the first time the Stones had toured the US in for ever, but 3 years was the same as between VL and BTB, and the break before that was 5 years.

But if you're going by the title of this thread, those don't count, as they weren't part of a tour.

Yes, you're right. Forgot about those two (El Mocambo and Oshawa) but they were not part of a tour, so let's agree that we've had almost nothing between '76 and '89.

The United States had an eight year wait between the Tatoo You tour in 1981 and the Steel Wheels tour in 1989. In the time in between those tours, both Keith and Ronnie played in the US and there was Live Aid.
