Question About Early Stones Career
Posted by: Bungo ()

It seems to me that The Stones had success incredibly early in their career.
My question is, basically, how long after they formed did they get a recording contract? :

When did The Stones form?

When did they sign a recording contract?

They recorded Come On in May of 1963......now are you talking about when Charlie joined or before that. It well documented.

"Dick Rowe [head of A&R at Decca Records] caught the band on May 5, 1963 at the Crawdaddy Club in London; within the week, they were signed to the label" - [UltimateClassicRock.com] .

OK. I get it now.

According to Wikipedia their first gig as "The Rolling Stones" (less Wyman and Watts) was July 1962.
A grueling 10 months later they signed a record deal in May 1963.

That's laughably fast. What new band nowadays is going to sign a record deal after only 10 months?

If you look at "Rolling With The Stones", page 36, you'll see in the newspaper cutting reproduced there (Korner Cancels) that they were actually billed (pun not intended) as "Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones".

The Backstreet Boys formed in April 20, 1993; played their first gig less than a month later at Sea World Orlando and got signed to a record label in February 1994 in the midst of a grueling tour of high schools.
So 10 months, same as the Stones.

With all respect to the Backstreet Boys, we see two very unequal careers here.

These days you just need enough hits on You-Tube and the record companies will be on the phone.
