Which Song Would You Cut/Replace...and for Which?

so...if you HAD TO cut 1-3 songs from Goat's Head Soup AND include 1-3 songs from the new releases....which would they be?

I could probably do without "Coming Down Again" and would substitute "Criss Cross" in its place...

other than that, I think there's a reason the "new" tracks didn't make the final cut on GHS...

I like them all, but:

a) Scarlet is too sloppy

b) All the Rage seems like 3 different songs put together in panache (spell)

c) Criss Cross is the best of the bunch

IMO....

as stated, I like all three of the "new" tunes...though, I liked the "new" Exile and Some Girls stuff better....

1. Criss cross for Dancing with D
2. All the Rage for Can you hear the music
3. Replace Hide your love with the alternate
Hide your love.

Have Scarlet as a Single but not on the LP.

Another question:

Which GHS Studio-Outtakes (from Bootlegs) would you add?

'Separately' would fit, 'Fast Talking Slow Walking' too, Windmill is just another Instrumental. Is 'Brown Leaves' worth it?

Any other suggestions?

Why not have them all as the Deluxe edition includes?

1. Dancing With Mr. D
2. 100 Years Ago
3. Coming Down Again
4. Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)
5. Angie
6. Criss Cross
7. Hide Your Love
8. Winter
9. Can You Hear The Music
10. Star Star

Silver Train as a b-side only track to Angie. I think Criss Cross is a perfect opener to the second half of the album.

I'd replace Star Star with Criss Cross and have it as a kick ass opening track vs. the plodding Mr.D which would work better somewhere in the middle of the album, and leave the rest as is.

To be trustful to the Jamaica sessions only : remove Silver Train which was recorded in 1970 and Hide Your Love that was started in London in May 73. And add Criss Cross and Through the Lonely Nights

I wouldn't change anything. GHS as it is, is connected to the memories I have from those exiting days in 1973 and there is no need to mess with that.
Patience over many decades eventually gives me the bonus CD with the interpretations of 2020 and some interesting alterations on existing songs of those days. I've known Criss Cross (man) and the other "All the Rage" version ("arse") for decades and really enjoy the frished up versions. Scarlet is a funny, enjoyable, but not spectacular song, not even close to Living In A Ghost Town.
Can't wait to receive my ordered GHS Super deLuxe ...

for me Criss Cross for Hide Your Love

I would take a Tattoo You approach to transforming this album - a rockin' side and a softer side.

1. Criss Cross - Baffles the hell out of me to this day that Mick and/or Keith thought Mr. D worthy of opening the album...
2. All The Rage - Probably the weakest of the new releases but Mr. D and Can You Hear The Music are abominations...
3. Star Star- This has always been a song in need of a fig leaf - let's hide it in the middle of the first side...
4. Hide Your Love (Alternate version)- Wow. This and Mr. D were always my first cuts when doctoring this record but the new version is magnificent - highlight of the record...
5. Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) - Could've ditched the doo doos but kept the parenthesis by retitling this Heartbreaker (Black Lives Matter)...
6. Scarlet - My favorite of the new releases even though it drips blood in a few places - that chorus and Jagger's breathy delivery gives me chicken skin...
7. 100 Years Ago - Piano version of course but with Taylor’s solo etc. tacked on at the end)
8. Angie - no comments needed for these last three classic ballads...
9. Coming Down Again
10. Winter

Because you fountain of dull dishwater we are obsessed with creating the perfect record (Which I believe I've come close to achieving).

I've made my own CD2 of GHS Rarities & Alternate Mixes:

1 - Scarlet [Killers-Remix]
2 - All The Rage
3 - Criss Cross
4 - Heartbreaker [Instrumental]
5 - 100 Years Ago [Piano Demo]
6 - Can You Hear The Music [Glyn Johns 1973 Mix]
7 - Separately
8 - Through The Lonely Nights
9 - Fast Talking Slow Walking
10 - Dancing With Mr. D. [Instrumental]

The 'Hide Your Love' [Alternative Mix] replaces the original 'Hide Your Love' on CD1.

GHS is what it is-- warts and all. You take it for what it is. Cant re-write history. A classic album. Most bands would live their left nut to produce an album as good as this.

I expanded disc 2 of the Deluxe Edition like this.

100 Years Ago (1973 Glyn Johns mix - Japan only)
Can You Hear The Music (1973 Glyn Johns mix - Japan only)
Through The Lonely Nights
Fast Talking Slow Walking
Waiting On A Friend (early version)
Tops (instrumental early version)
Separately
Windmill

I don't think Scarlet should even be considered to replace anything on Goats Head Soup because it wasn't written yet at the time Goats Head Soup was released.

I was disappointed when Goats Head Soup came out back in '73 ...maybe I was spoiled by the previous Stones releases started from '68.......but whats wrong with Silver Train I always liked this song...and as years gone by I Iove most of the the songs..

Star Star would make a great opener and All the Rage a good closer. However neither one of the songs (or Silver Train) has the feel of the Jamaican sessions.

The heart and soul of Goats Head Soup are the Jamaican sessions. There's a feel, a mood, something special just like a famous artist who paints has different periods of their work.

I think it would fit better with an IORR Deluxe but glad to have it!
