I imagine the facade for that shop will be ripe for vandalism...maybe a Beatles fan (Banksy?) will spray paint a giant green apple on it.

And then Apple Corp. would sue them for intellectual property right infringement before settling a juicy transaction.

And better do it soon; I predict it will be shuttered within a year of its opening. Thats a lot of overhead to be covered by the sale of trinkets.

jb

Plausible.

But I've seen plenty of shops like that which seem to have very few customers and I assume that they are more advertising loss leaders than true commercial outfits.

Not really disagreeing though.

Yeah, surely the web is the main place to sell this merchandise stuff, but I guess they wanted to have one such a concrete place to sell it in flesh too. And what would be a better place than their home city, the center of Stones world, and the world famous Carnaby Street. Some tourists might just visit it by accident, thanks to location and out of curiosity, even not being any big Stones fans. A big part of being, like you suggested, more for advertising/brand purposes.

I think the emphasis on “world-first flagship store” in their marketing for this leaves little doubt they intend on opening several around the globe.
NY, LA, Vancouver, Toronto,Vegas, Miami, etc in NA alone is my guess.
(depending on the global virus status of course)

"RS No.9 will feature “exclusive collaborations, new fashion and merchandise”, as well as stocking the band’s extensive music catalogue and latest releases. Items will also be available to purchase online."

I'm envisioning stores very similar to the "pop-up"s that went up inside high-end stores during the last leg..

From last year...
The collection includes T-shirts and sweaters by Cactus Plant Flea Market (designed by Pharrell Williams' former assistant), 15 limited-edition Bird scooters and Away luggage.

"pop up" stores do not require a lot of overhead like a slick black storefront on Carnaby Street.

Maybe they could incorporate a whore house into the building and casino. Then you might have something. I believe prostitution is legal in London and/or England?

Agree! I always laugh when people complain about things like $13 beers. If no one bought a $13 beer, they wouldn't be $13. You don't have to buy anything you don't need.

People that can't afford 13 dollar beers complain.

As you note they have freedom of choice. If 13 dollars is too much then go thirsty. Others will pay the 13 dollars so who cares.

But what about this makes you laugh?

With corona shadowing me, I get my H****ken beer at home, cool from the fridge, 38 Euro CENTS per bottle ...
By the way, they should make high level security features around Nr. 9. In my 70s Liverpool days, the city gave up placing "Penny Lane" street name plates on the street walls of houses.
The last logo on the upper wall and the sign look very, very tempting winking smiley
And in that respect I think that some Stones fans are just as bad as some Beatles fanscool smiley

It looks like a high class brothel, they might as well follow through with that promise. Poker in the front, liquor in the back.

Carnaby Street is full of tat nowadays, no? I suppose the Stones’ 60’s connection and that the street was once a fashionable place to be seen, is the reason they’ve decided to open there. Wasn’t Liam Gallagher’s clothing boutique located there, too?
It was. And I loved it!

Makes a bit more sense the Beatles would have a store as they haven't existed as band since 1970, and are still considered the #1 band by most - lots of nostalgia involved
But the Stones - a supposedly still active band...they're becoming sort of like Starbucks or McDonalds...or Disney...or Hello Kitty...

I don't think that the 'beatlesstorelondon' is Offical. Actually, make that ... I'm pretty certain that it's not official.

I didn't bother to open the link initially, but I think you're right about that. It's familiar looking, and my wife and I might have went been in there after spending some time at Regents Park the last time we were in London.
I think there was a smaller version at Covent Garden, but might have been unrelated and/or more than just Beatles memorabilia.

Do you mean they are just licensed to sell the Beatles merchandise, but Apple or whoever doesn't have a real stake in the store?

I wonder what the actual involvement of the Rolling Stones is in this new store? Could be just basically a licensing arrangement. Wonder if Mick or someone had something to do with the design of the space and the merchandise they sell? I did notice the mention above of UMG.

And I suspect as the flagship store is named "No 9", there will be approximately 8 more announced. I hope one opens in San Francisco, just to check it out.

It's a normal shop specialising in Beatles stuff. Anyone could do it.

Hilarious overthinking. It's called "No 9" for the brain numbing reason that that is its address! Check it out!

Well if thats its address, that figures.

But you cannot just go having stores using trade names without agreements. Just isn't done, although I don't know about in England. Certainly not in America, just ask anyone who attempts to run a business with "Volkswagen" in its name. They very soon get a cease and desist letter from high power attorneys.

Maybe the laws in England are different to those in the jurisdiction in which you live?

My guess is that good old British common sense is being applied. As long as the shop does not become a big threat to Apple, then I reckon that they see it as good advertising (not that The Beatles really need to advertise!).

If The Beatles started getting as precious about it as you suggest, then half of the tourist businesses in Liverpool would have to close.

But I am certain that the store makes very certain indeed that every item it sells is correctly and appropriately licenced. Not everything with 'Beatles' on it is always directly available from the Beatles web site. I have some lovely socks that I'm fairly certain have never been there, I have a Yellow Sub jigsaw box etc, and all have stuff on them that confirms the licence.

Similar has to be true for the many images. Most will be the copyright of the photographer.

But I spotted the John Lennon coin. I have one of those and I just checked and there's no licensing stuff on the packaging for that. Perhaps The Queen didn't need to ask Yoko's permission?

Quite. It's all about the music. I live 80 miles West of London and wouldn't dream of visiting though might go for a cursory look if I just happened to be in the area. i haven't bough any merch at gigs since Licks 2003 and I've been to 25 shows since then. The gig itself is enough for me.

For those who like that kind of thing, enjoy and I hope you find something of interest. It's a free World and each to their own.
