With the Stones it's never disco or whatever.

It's always Stones-Disco, Stones-Reggae, Stones- Country or Stones-Punk.

And Charlie was very right about hearing these songs in a club.

When Emotional Rescue came out I didn't really like it.
Some weeks later I entered a club in Holland, a black people's place.
Suddenly E.Rescue was loudly blaring through their system.

That was so great! Like a different song.
M
Since that moment I really liked the tune.

Miss you was great from the start.

Thanks for the discussion (and to @Mile High for the tunes)

I've just been thinking about how some of my favorite records contain a mixture of genres, that range from country to dance to hard rock -- Queen's News of the World for instance-- then I was thinking how varied the styles are on Some Girls and Emotional Rescue.

I was thinking about how you justify your "rock purism" when you are young, but that in fact---at least for me--the best records have different styles. As much as I love a Ramones record, it's just kind of the same card trick over and over.

Tone & Space...what else is there?

Tone is everything...but Space gives mood.

There was some good disco...there is some good pop...but stay away from sugar.

You couldn't really dance to Miss You or Emotional Rescue in a 'classic' disco. Those songs never started a run to the dance floor...

MISS YOU's four-on-the-floor Mick talks about in 25x5 was brought back for DON'T STOP (if my hermeneutics haven't betrayed me) which I love.

How many albums have had a big disco and punk-rock influence like Some Girls?

I never followed the "Disco sucks" thing, but on the other hand I never listened to Disco in the day either, except maybe The Rolling Stones songs listed above.

Now, I realize that Disco was an important genre, but still no regrets now for being a non-listener back then.

I do have a self-made "album" of about 40 Disco songs from the day on my mp3 player, and I do listen to them once in a great while.

That's the Stones story and makes them as special as they are. Every move to different musical shores resulted in beating some existing fans but winning more new ones. Examples?
The Stones turned from a blues to a pop band (1964/65)
The Stones turned from a pop to a serious rock band (1968)
The Stones released Angie (1973) on their way to get on board to glimmer stuff
The Stones released Some Girls, both firing Disco and Punk
...

It's their greatest achievement IMO to have soaked up all the then current music and fashion trends, chewed them, spit them out - and in the end it sounded like the Stones :-)

I once threw out my back dancing to the bass line in Emotional Rescue. Seriously considered suing Ronnie. She’s So Cold on the other hand IS a number that would’ve had the kids running to the dance floor but the DJs never believed me.

But I don’t think the Stones have ever done ‘disco.’ I wish they would though. Forget the blues and cover Maxine Nightingale’s ‘Right Back Where We Started From.’

Ha!

That seems crazy, until you realize they were in that neighborhood when they covered this.

Some people are confusing funk with disco. Dance and Hot Stuff have nothing to do with disco, imo.

I totally agree with this.

Very lively and animated today you are . At the same time one can imagine Mick dressed in his finest Toga lounging on a throne inside the Roman Pantheon receiving dignitaries and such ! Imagine that !

The greatness of miss you is undeniable. I would imagine that when it came out it opened people up to appreciating disco.

Bee Gees.

Probably a lot of the best disco was done a la "The Wrecking Crew." Presumably in many cases there were no "disco groups" per se. Just a lot of talented people charting out new musical territory.

Take a woman who can sing with passion, and put her in a studio with talented musicians, and make some magic happen.

Some of this stuff is really more funk than disco...Hot Stuff doesn’t seem like disco to me at all...

The song Miss You is probably the most disco song the Stones have produced. It is a really good song because it is perfect as far as that musical genre is concerned. When the stones take upon a specific musical style usually they leave a mark on it. Who would shit on Miss You today? Very few I hope.

I never understood people who were limited in their musical scope. So the Stones played Disco when Disco was happening. So? They did the same with psychedelic music. With Reggae. I remember listening to Black and Blue and thinking a song like Hand of Fate sounded old hat, forced, and totally out of its time.

The Stones have always took a stab at multiple genres, with varying degrees of success. That whole Miss You/Some Girls experience was very much of its time. Musical journalism. The last time they really hit it out of the park in that way.

ive nothing against disco, brought up with it in the 70,s was always in the charts, liked some of it and hated others, stones done it well and while im not a big fan of miss you or emotional rescue i dig them for releasing this stuff cos a lot of people do like these songs.

strange how the stones seemed to get dissed for going off the rock and roll track. its the variety and versatility that defines them in my opinion.

Jeez...while I do like some vintage disco, this is one tune that turned my stomach in every way - from the freaky looking lady to her weird animal-like vocals
I recall seeing the video on some pop music television show c. '78/79, and she looked like a mom in one of those '70's horror movies...in fact I think they modeled the short-haired Friday the 13th mom after her.
Still a bit scary when I hear and see it today...play at your own risk: eye popping smiley winking smiley

*Oddly, I kind of liked that after all these years...lol...

They were more funky blues rock to me. Driving drums, catchy bass line and guitars....I hated disco but loved those tunes.

Hot Stuff to me is a funk influenced rock song. You can hear something similiar
during the bridge of Heartbreaker already, on Brussels for example. Keith is playing a single noted funky riff while Taylor brings in the rock with his distorted 7/9 chords using a wah-wah.
