For German fans: 40th anniversary of quiz show with topic Rolling Stones

Fourty years ago, on July 13, 1980, the Rolling Stones were the topic of the German quiz show 'Der Große Preis' which was broadcast via ZDF television and was hugely popular in Germany back then. The candidate was 22-year-old Eberhard Fritz, and he won the quiz show, being entitled to reappear in August, where he went out second.
They invited Alexis Korner to appear on the show, and her performed a short blues number. The Stones had beend expected to do a tour of Europe to promote the new ‚Emotional Rescue‘ album but as everybody knows they would appear not until two years later.
Some might remember this quiz show led by Wim Thoelke, and it is really fascinating that the Rolling Stones still exist as a band.

Same here - more interested in Wum & Wendelin (+ Blauer Klaus) or Fritze Flink or Walter Spahrbier. Stones-fan then from 1982 ....

Back then I was 12 years and also more interested in Wum + Wendelin. My first Stones record was Undercoveer in 1983 and I am a fan since then...

I remember another German Stones quiz show from the 90's. The guy failed at the end.

Think he did a German Stones magazine as well.

The great times of Stones fan mags and bootleg CDS.

I remember that show very well. It wasn't my regular TV program at the time but I had to watch it because of the Stones topic. A snippet of the Respectable video was shown and the final master question was: Who was the father of the Rolling Stones? Instead of the expected answer "Alexis Korner" the guy said Muddy Waters. Alexis seemed a little disappointed when he entered the stage.

With the 17-Oct-1961 in background I would also had answered Muddy Waters since Mick was already influenced by him due to the American LPs, before they met Alexis Korner in early 1962.

I’d say Brian Jones - he already had kids when they started.

Yes, he was. But he was one of the kindest persons you could ever imagine.

During the first show they showed a snippet of the 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' promo video.

It was forty years ago…

14 August 1980

Second episode of German quiz show Der Grosse Preis with topic Rolling Stones

Special guest: Alexis Korner, who played a short blues. His Father came from Austria so he spoke German as a second 'mother language'.

Interesting, thanks for the info. Now I know why I haven't watched it - was in vacation at that time and more interested in the local landscape than in TV ....

Have a great weekend!

PS: I just discovered a great podcast series called Under the Radar: Rolling Stones. Worth getting into.
