The amounts that UK courts tend to hand out in defamation cases are just very small change for the likes of Johnny Depp, who'll have to pay out many many times more in legal fees, win or lose. It does no Hollywood figure any favours to be labelled as a wife-beater, so I would hazard a guess that his main interest is in clearing his name. But whichever way the verdict goes, neither of them is going to come out of it looking good.
