Wow! The Rock and Roll Circus is one of my favorite things ever. Has the other version of Sympathy for the Devil, with Brian on guitar instead of Keith I believe, ever been released? Also, I guess this is a rehearsal? I'd also love to hear Jethro Tull's Fat Man.

That was very nice to hear. Unfortunately Brian appears to not be on it at all, and it's one of his greatest contributions.

I was playing this just now (on vinyl boot) and the wife came in just as it started and said "hey that sounds slower!"..She knew the difference...that's why I love her!

Very nice try, but good they didn’t include it in the video/DVD because “the shining diamond” was missing. It would have been unforgivable!

Wasn't he "missing" on the other tracks on the dvd as well?

It was copyright released months ago. My email isn't hidden, if you want the other studio / rehearsal tracks.

It is inferior to the original IMO.Without Brian’s recorder it loses its magic.I also like the live performances from 1967 with Brian playing great recorder.

without Brian's flute that song is nothing

Nice surprise!

Can anyone confirm whether that is Charlie or Jimmy Miller on the drums?

He did participate in a couple other songs, but where he didn't come out well, they "deleted" his contribution from the recording.

I agree. I have several live recordings from 1967 and with a magnificent Brian Jones on recorder on Ruby Tuesday. I consider those as real treasures.

He participated in all of the songs at the R&R Circus, albeit in a mostly subdued manner. The only part where he isn't heard playing what he played is the intro of YCAGWYW, but his guitar comes in once the whole band does.

That's good to know! There were rumours of his emplyfier being shut down, etc.
For a good representation of movie off course poor stuff should be filtered, but apparently Brian's contribution wasn't as bad/poor as often told.
Whatever way you look at it, The "Circus" is a historic chapter in the history of the Rolling Stones.

And if they played it live with that arrangement it would still be nothing without Brian. He should have got a writing credit for it, just like Wyman for JJ Flash.Look how U2 handles their writing credits.Im not saying Keith and Mick haven’t written most of the songs ,but still..

You know this because...?

They have done many lovely live versions of RT that prove you wrong.

Comparing a rehearsal with a finished studio take is a bit fresh...

Unfortunately, His Majesty's work on showing what Brian played did point out that Brian's contribution to RnR Circus was horrendous. Even to the extent that you can clearly understand the Stones wanted to sack him -here you are, the wold leading rock band of the day, spending loads of money on a movie project, and there's your guitar player being totally wasted and not being able to play even the most simple guitar chords.

. The lovely live versions are only “lovely” when Matt Clifford is copying his recorder karaoke style. There is no lovely live version without it

Is it possible that he played so poorly as you say because they went on stage after being up almost 24 hours and he may have been so drunk or high he couldn’t play .Because he didn’t seem to have this problem at the NME Awards show in 1968 where according to Marianne Faithful he played great on JJ Flash.Did not playing guitar on the studio versions mean maybe he didn’t know the songs that well.

That's entirely possible. But part of being a professional musician is to be somewhat sober when the lights go on...

Exactly. And a professional musician should know the stuff he's going to play and the difference between an informal jam session and an official event that's going to be recorded and filmed for public distribution...

...and if not, getting sacked sooner or later shouldn't come as a big surprise.

I could not agree with Dandelion more! After the slide on No Expectations, nothing that Brian did was fundamental. It is so funny how people try to "romanticize" his contributions from late 68 and early 69 as somehow worthy of anything other than "how sad".
