I watched Marathon Man last night for the first time in many years - great movie.

Is it safe?

Next up for either tonight or tomorrow is Straw Dogs - another great Dustin Hoffman movie which I also haven't seen in years.

Laurence Olivier was great in Marathon Man. It's been years, maybe I'll give that a watch. Straw Dogs is so violent, don't know if I'd be up for that one.

Not a movie but I have started watching "The Twilight Zone" on Netflix from episode #1. Fantastic shows in black and white but the picture is HD quality. The films must have been restored!

Isn't this one fantastically overrated? It's certainly not among the Coen's best and the story in itself is kinda dumb. The film has a artificial vibe around as if most scenes or characters were designed to become cult" (and it didn't fail as there are legions of losers who now act like the Dude). Blah....

Roger Deakins' photography is, as usual, superb though.

FF & Transformers have their place. Sometimes a little well done mindless entertainment is a very good thing. & some "movies" are high art too. The Lord of the Rings films come to mind immediately (not The Hobbit). Magical stuff.

Pretty brutal but a compelling, brooding performance from Joaquin Phoenix. You can see how it may have helped him get Joker gig. Movie has overtones of Taxi Driver.

Currently on Netflix in UK.

I would strongly recommend a Spanish film, "Wild Tales", from 2015. Violent, funny and insightful. Produced by Pedro Almodóvar...

I also saw a mention of the Twilight Zone: I watched the original Nightmare at 20,000 Feet last week. William Shatner was a great actor in that, and it was from a great story by Richard Matheson.

given the times, i thought this might be a good thread. i post on a few other sites & this was the only 1 who didn't have something to this effect. given the international nature of the members here, there should be some interesting posts.

The car chase in French Connection still stands with the one in Bullit as best ever. Never seen New York Ripper, have to check that out.

I watch mostly films on TCM (Turner Classic Movies).

I love the murder mysteries - and those with Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, or Edward G. Robinson.

Those old Charlie Chan and Tarzan movies were on every Sunday afternoon when I was a kid.

Hello crholmstrom, if you like the car chase in Bullit and French Connection you should see "The Seven Ups" with Roy Scheider filmed in New York and with another memorable car chase with the same driver that is on the film Bullit.

New York Ripper was directed by Lucio Fulci, a must see if you like violence and blood.

Not sure you wouldn't find it tacky and eploitive of violence against women. It's a -grade slasher. Fulci once was a talented baroque director but by the time he made this one he was just cashing on gore and violence (imo).
