didn't Keef (supposedly) say the first time he heard RJ: "he's good...but who's the other guy playing w/ him?"

Keith allegedly said that after Brian played him Johnson for the first time.

It looks like he's wearing the same shirt and suspenders.

Christiano, in the Vanity Fair article you linked his sister tells the story. He took them himself in a photo booth in Memphis for a nickel apiece, one afternoon when they were hanging out in Memphis. Those two photos are definitely from that afternoon. She held on to the newly surfaced one all these years.
If I recall, the other authenticated one is a photo of Robert sitting with Robert Lockwood Jr.s mom (who Robert Johnson was in a relationship with) and with Robert Jr. and his wife. It appeared about a decade ago.
Best book about Robert Johnson by far, including detailed information about the places where he lived and travelled and, finally, detailed information about his passing and burial. He was actually buried twice (in the same spot), because when his folks arrived after the first hurried burial in a pine box, they had him dug up, put in a proper casket and reburied. Incredible book, highly recommended.Quote

You should also check out the book "Up Jumped the Devil: The Real Life of Robert Johnson", by Bruce Conforth and Gayle Dean Wardlow, which was published last year. It's an incredible, deeply researched book which uncovers more information about Johnson's life than you would believe possible after all these years...

Here's one for ya .... a few years ago
my good mate Roger decided to take trip
to Southern states of US .... So I asked him
while in Mississippi could he get me small jar
of dirt from a crossroad ....
So yeah Roger gets the dirt okay but when he
eventually gets to LA to fly out they do a
random luggage check on him ... They find the
jar of dirt and ask him what it is and what its all about ....
Totally embarrassed he tries to explain where it's
from and the Johnson devil/crossroad connection ....
They confiscate the dirt ... give him complete security
check over and eventually release him with strict warning ....
We still laugh about it to this day ..... Crossroad Blues but NO dirt

I don't think it is illegal and I think they were just displaying an "abundance of caution". I think if Rockmans friend had raised enough of a stink they probably would have let it go. But he probably didn't want to make the situation worse by arguing with them. That's just my take on it...but I don't think its illegal to bring a bit of dirt out of the country. Not yet anyway.
