Why I have decided not to see the Stones this time

Being in Seattle, I was considering seeing the band again, having seem them over 4 decades. I still remember the day I heard Satisfaction on saw them on US television in the distant past. They have always been my favorite band, great guitars, often top lyrics, and the uniqueness of Mick's voice. I last travelled to Wembley to see them on Licks Tour, have been to Villa Nellcote in Villefranche sur Mer where Exile was done and had the good luck to briefly chat with Charlie in London at LeCaprice restaurant about 2 years ago. So why not see them again?
1. Because of the set list- I would like fewer old big hits (seems there is a core of 10), I want more of ABB which I really like (with about four exceptions), and some of their early C Berry/Blues numbers! This band can afford to take some risks! The shows are about 95% sold out.
2. The excellent critical reviews here that do have some objectivity and I find it both sad and irritating that Keith and Ronnie are more often inconsistent leaving Mick and Charlie to carry on, yes I am not expecting excellence all the time, 3. The high cost of tickets -I could easily afford the highest but refuse, 4. The often questionnable sound quality that is sometimes too loud. 5. Irritating fans who are not really into the music, drunk, leave early, and do not appreciate the rareties when they are played. It is too bad we don't have DVDs of the earlier decades to preserve some great moments.

"The shows are about 95% sold out."

Michael Cohl says they are 98% sold out

I think you should reconsider. Rock concerts get a little grating on the nerves at our age but to see these guys it's worth it. And since it will probably be the last tour, at least of this mega-show type, you'll be glad you went.smiling smiley

Money is the determining factor for me. The mortgage and groceries and utilities come first....on top of that, insurance and gasoline.

I'm happy to read y'all's reviews and listen to ABB on my cd player.

Leftbank, maybe it's the last time. Go at least once I'd say.

LEFTBANK
I agree with point 5
For the rest judgement is difficult to make without going there.
I learnt to expect nothing (experience) and get more out of it.
I do agree of the horrendous ticketprices
I do agree that the set list could bring more varieties.
But let's face it
Even my self would sometimes pack my work into a book close it and get retired and I am still in the 40ies.
So I am always overwhelmed by the quality these gentlemen present still today.
Ok I wouldn't call it a rockband rather a big band today.

Your loss I'd say. Have a further think about it and ask yourself whether or not you will regret not having seen them on this tour in due course ?

I fully agree. Here is a link to the 91 (!) songs they played in 1963. Much risk! No warhorses!

The Black Crowes MSG, New Year's eve. See an old fashioned rock&roll band play whatever they please with virtuosity, and fans who appreciate it.

That's true, the Black Crowes with Marc Ford & Ed Harsch always give good music. And even ACDC or the Who, that always play the same songs, have more interest in playing than in earning money.

My suggestion: stay home, drink tea with milk, have a warm bath, go to bed at 8 p.m. and be just careful of yourself.

Leftbank, where exactly is Villa Nellcote. Have been to the Cote d' Azur twice and have yet to get answers as to where it is.

Thank you in advance.

There is only one reason to skip the current Rolling Stones tour and that is money. Yes, the tickets are very expensive, but the other reasons you gave don't hold water. The sound is great, Jagger is....well Jagger and Keith and Ron are doing a good job. I'm planning my British vacation around the 06 leg of the tour.

Good choice, I went to a few shows this tour but sold my tickets to see them in PA and DC. As time a bunch of long-time Stones fans that I used to go to shows with back in the day. Never did I think the Stones would do this kind of tour.

"Michael Cohl says they are 98% sold out"

He also said there would be club shows.

"And since it will probably be the last tour, at least of this mega-show type, you'll be glad you went."

All the more reason not to go and wait for smaller scale shows where the music will matter more and they won't play the same songs again and again.

Booooring. I don't really care if you see the Stones or not. That means more chances on a ticket for me!

Have been there twice, too. If you go to Villefranche-sur-Mer from Nice, go through the whole "city". When entering Villeneuve Loubet go to the right - down the hill. Turn right again direction to Cap Ferrat. You will find Nellcote on the left side of the small street. It has a black iron gate. The name is indicated on the wall to the right in golden letters.

and all the fans of You Can't Always Get What You Want should stay at home, listen to Let It Bleed and spare the rest of us the singing-along of the somewhat childish refrain during concerts

Oh, so now people who can't afford $450 tickets are "life's losers"? That's real rock'n'roll spirit.

You're truly the type of person that Mick and Michael Cohl want attending Stones shows.

"Oh, so now people who can't afford $450 tickets are "life's losers"? That's real rock'n'roll spirit."

I will be trying for parking lot cheapies for a couple shows and have $60 for 2 shows but I have been to over 500 shows (Stones 23 times) and NEVER seen a concert that was worth that kind of money. Merely affording it or not has nothing to with it.

Leftbank says: "The excellent critical reviews here that do have some objectivity and I find it both sad and irritating that Keith and Ronnie are more often inconsistent leaving Mick and Charlie to carry on"

Ohh, yes... You haven't seen the Stones on this tour, but you feel sure about how they are performing. Are you listening to the boots? How do you know how excactly Ronnie and Keith are playing? Why do you think the reviews (not only here, not only on Stones sites, but also on the whole Press) are "off" and a few objections, which as you can see are bacically -not completely, of course- coming from guys who haven't seen the Stones on this tour are "in"?

Leftbank says about lists: "This band can afford to take some risks! The shows are about 95% sold out." Please, remind me of what "democratic" rule says that the band must displease the 95% or 99% of the big audiences...

i f they are under a 5 hour drive
i'll go regardless what they are doing
They may not be be back again. While thats said everytime, you just don't know now. I saw DC VA and NC and they only played maybe 4 or 5 songs ive never seen, i would be pissed if i missed them.
They are my favorite band no matter what. I'll be with them
