Little Richard, Founding Father of Rock Who Broke Musical Barriers, Dead at 87 (RollingStone.com)

Pianist-singer behind “Tutti Frutti,” “Good Golly Miss Molly” and “Long Tall Sally” set the template that a generation of musicians would follow.

Very sad day in Saint Louis. I could tell my mother was holding back tears when I called and told her this morning.

A Flamboyant, Outspoken, Musician extraordinaire and civil rights champion are the best ways to describe Mr. Penniman. Always treated us like family, loved my father dearly and will always have a special place in all the Berry families hearts.

Rest well and say hello to my father Mr. Penniman.

One of my favorite concert memories was seeing your father perform with Little Richard on New Year's Eve in a casino in Atlantic City in 2000. They both played well and although they didn't perform together I could feel there was a bond between them (which you just confirmed). Thank you for sharing your story.

This letter of thanks from Little Richard was published on Billboard magazine in June 1956. I've found it posted on a FB group and it's so amazing in many ways, imho.

The great thing about being a fan is that fandom is a democracy. The greatest music stars in the world are fans of other musicians.
It is a wonderful conversation, and anyone can join in. Bowie did this on a chat show in Britain around 15 years ago.

He was talking about going to see Little Richard’s rock and roll tour, in Brixton, south London, when he was a young teenager.
The Rolling Stones were supporting; Bowie recalled with a laugh how the Stones’ fan-base at that time comprised about six people, including himself, all of whom rushed the stage as soon as the band appeared.
Between numbers, an unimpressed older man in the stalls stood up and shouted at Mick Jagger: ‘Why don’t you lot get your bloody hair cut?’ To which Jagger replied, with stroppy hauteur: ‘Wot? And look like you?’

When I watched this interview I had no idea that Bowie was such a great raconteur and could be so funny.
I once heard from another musician that most great singers are also excellent mimics and certainly his impression of Jagger brought the whole scene to life.
What was also great was how excited Bowie had been when his wife bought him Little Richard’s tour jacket for a birthday present.
It turned out to be enormous. ‘I’m not so sure about the “Little” thing, though’, he remarked. ‘The man must have been huge!’

It never gets old listening to him. Sad that he's passed.

I wish these legends didn't stop making music. Almost like the Stones now, that is why I'd like to have at least this one more (hopefully) upcoming album before the Stones are done.

Well anyway Chuck Berry had a pretty good album he recorded, just before passing, maybe there's something that LR did as well. Good golly.

Mick and Keith on Richard, from a sort of festschrift of an article at [americansongwriter.com] :

KEITH: “The first time we realized we were on the same stage with Little Richard was in 1963. That seemed like the top of the world for us. That’s as big a thrill as I’ve ever had. The most exciting moment of my life was appearing on the same stage as Little Richard.

MICK: “I had heard so much about the audience reaction that I thought there must be some exaggeration. But it was all true. He drove the whole house into a complete frenzy. There’s no single phrase to describe his hold on the audience. I couldn’t believe the power of Little Richard on stage. He was amazing. Chuck Berry is my favorite, along with Bo, but nobody could beat Little Richard’s stage act. Little Richard is the originator and my first idol.”

Oh gosh - yet more sad news. Little Richard will forever remain an absolute legend.

I saw him but once 15 years ago. He was already verging on the frail but put on a magnificent and memorable performance. He was signing things afterwards so I had the chance to meet him fleetingly. He left a good impression on me as someone who was gentlemanly, humble and good-natured, which, to be honest, I hadn't been expecting. RIP, Little Richard, and thanks for the music.

Mick has paid a heartfelt tribute to him on Twitter.

I recall that the first time I saw this picture [cdn.images.express.co.uk] I thought that Little Richard looked out of scale compared to The Beatles.

He really must have been a big bloke!
