Ranking The Singles Of The 2000’s
Posted by: sf37 ()

By my count (unless I’m forgetting one), “Living In A Ghost Town” marks the 13th single released by the Stones during the new millenium. My question is - - just for fun - - how would you rank them, based solely on your personal preference?

Here’s my current ranking (though this probably changes somewhat by the day):

1) Doom & Gloom
2) Hate To See You Go
3) Plundered My Soul
4) Don’t Stop
5) One More Shot
6) Rough Justice
7) Living In A Ghost Town
8) Rain Fall Down
9) No Spare Parts
10) Biggest Mistake
11) Just Your Fool
12) Ride ‘Em On Down
13) Streets Of Love

Curiously, for me, my absolute favourite Stones song of the 2000’s is a non-single (Laugh, I Nearly Died), but it is what it is!

Cheers!

The 2000s means two things:

The first decade of the Twenty Hundreds and

The Twenty Hundreds.

Some aren't worth ranking. Is this overall or strictly new recordings? If it's to include EOMS and SG deluxe reissues:

Plundered My Soul
Living In A Ghost Town
Rough Justice
No Spare Parts
Just Your Fool
Doom And Gloom
Biggest Mistake
Ride 'Em On Down
Don't Stop
One More Shot

My thoughts were to simply include any overall singles released by the band for the year 2000 and later, regardless if they were new recordings or not, so yes, that would encompass both the EOMS and SG deluxe reissues. Having said that, I wasn’t aware that “Following The River” was actually released as a single (as some have included this track in their lists) - - good to know, though I do realize there was also a promo video made for it.

And if solo material is allowed (and I think it should be), I'll happily include Trouble and Heartstopper from Keith.
And if I'm feeling generous (which right now I am) I'd include Superheavy's Miracle Worker, but I do so hesitantly.

Never been a fan of Plundered as it sounds too artificial and tinkered with, and all the vocals are bad (lead and backup).
And not including any of the other EOMS and SG extras as they're simply not worthy imo. Don't Stop from 40 Licks and the other singles from ABB are pure forgettable trash.

I'm almost certain "Following The River" was not released as a single. If I'm not mistaken though I think "So Young" was released as the second single from the SG Deluxe Reissue as there is an iTunes single release for it.

Don't rate the Deluxe songs, they don't fit in here in my opinion.

Well, yes and no, I think.
When someone talks about the plague in the 1300s it doesn’t mean 1300-1309.

True. Although we also have 10s and 20s (I know that's debatable winking smiley ) already in this century - if we need to specify smiling smiley

And we don't say that the 1900s had great music if we mean the 70s.

Difficult, this!

I would only rank 00's original compositions. Not 70's rehashes or non-original compositions. Otherwise it's a mess.

Following The River was not a single, just a promo single... Oh No Not You Again, I Love You Too Much the same thing. Have never seen a promo single for So Young.

Ranking The Singles Of the 21st Century. Wow third decade coming up..spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

In retrospect, that’s probably how I should have titled this thread, just to gain a consensus on the years to be included. As for when the new decade/century actually began, it’s irrelevant in this case because the first Stones single (“Don’t Stop”) was in 2002 anyway.

And I can understand the arguments for excluding the EOMS/SG deluxe releases due to the age of their origins, or excluding the B&L tracks for not being original compositions. As for “So Young”, the piano version was indeed released as an i-tunes single in this century, but the original version of this song was released much earlier, so that’s why I didn’t consider this track in my original ranking. But in all these cases, I believe it’s really just a matter of semantics and personal choice on whether or not you’d want to include them in your own personal rankings. Interesting perspectives though, to say the least, and all the feedback makes for some intriguing reading! Thanks again, all!
