Exile because it's what it is, just pure genius from the heart and the crotch with Beggars, GHS, ER, Black and Blue and Undercover as the 2-6 spots.

I am not a particularly big fan of LIB and SF but obviously most tunes on them are great.

Sticky Fingers-Sex, Drugs, and Rock N Roll at it's absolute best! This album drips swagger still to this day. And the answer to the difference between the Beatles vs Stones question....Swagger!

Impossible question fore me to answer.

Today it's LIB... because that's what I'm listening to...
..tomorrow it'll be something else winking smiley

Between the buttons and Goats head soup. Personal, sentimental reasons. :-)

Black and Blue. Funky, groovy and the best drum sound they’ve ever had.

Beggars Banquet - Mick and Keith started their path to develop as great songwriters and Keith use of open tunings and the rest is history.

Usually Exile, but sometimes Let It Bleed. But it's impossible to choose really, I wouldn't want to miss It's Only Rock 'n' Roll or Beggars Banquet.
Mainly everything from 68-74, minus Goat's Head Soup and plus Tattoo You, is number one with me.
Perhaps because Mick Taylor played on most of them, although the trend began way before his time with the band.

It has been Beggars Banquet for many years now.

The sound of it, the songs, the freakiness, the performances. It's brilliant!

For me it’s let it Bleed. I love the rockers, the country tunes and the blues of love in vain.

For me it would be like picking which Les Paul of mine is my favorite ! If it says Gibson on the headstock in inlaid Pearl and it has Les Paul signature in gold on it I love it , same as I love all the Stones albums !

Just a question: I read a lot about open tunings on this forum. Why would a song in open tuning be a better song than a song in standard tuning? Or am I reading too much into this?

If we’re talking official releases, I have to go with Ya Yas. Over the years, I have listened to that album beginning to end more than any other Stones album. If it weren’t Ya Yas, it would be LIB, then Aftermath, as it represents a great time in my life. But, I cannot dissect why exactly Ya Yas is my favorite. It just is.

Exile on Main Street. My initial exposure to the Stones way back when came from Hot Rocks and Rewind. A friend of mine urged me to dig deeper.

When I picked up Exile I only knew two tracks well, Tumbling Dice and Happy, and I liked them both. I thought to myself, what's the big deal here? I never heard of most of these songs?

Over a period of time I slowly but surely fell for each and every track on the LP. If I had to put together a list of my top 30 or 40 Stones tunes, I would have a hard time leaving out...

Rip This Joint
Casino Boogie
Tumbling Dice
Sweet Virginia
Torn & Frayed
Loving Cup
Happy
Ventilator Blues
Let it Loose

Sticky Fingers, Some Girls and Tattoo You are my next choices. Followed by Let it Bleed, Goats Head Soup and Black & Blue.

Let it Bleed would rank higher if I was doing "best" instead of "favorite".

Sticky Fingers is my favorite. I discovered it in 76 while I was in boarding school, listening to it constantly. I have that sound in me now, the melodies, the guitar licks, Jagger's voice, the darkness and the melancholy. Then the logo, the cover(thanks Andy), the first release on Rolling Stones record; too many good things happening with that record not to be impressed by it.
Rockandroll,
Mops

It's not that it's a better song, it's that it sounds better, if it lends to it. So I guess you're not reading too much into it.

Think of it like this: U2's Angel Of Harlem. Would that sound better to you in open G? Probably not.

Start Me Up - if it was played in standard it wouldn't be as good. Still a good song, just doesn't sound as good. It's a simple thing.

Start Me Up was the exact song I had in mind. If I play it in standard, the riff sounds like nothing special really, in open tuning it suddenly makes sense, even when the notes are exactly the same. So its about sound, the ringing of (open) strings, more than the musical content (in an abstract sense). On this thread I thought I detected some opinions arguing that certain records were better BECAUSE they used open tunings, hence my question. But they probably didn't mean that.

ExileonFingersOut. .

Because to my ears that's about the best Stones you can get.

Open tunings does not make any song better but it can add that thunderous sound dimension - JJF and SFM on acoustic guitar with open tunings no electric guitar and you get that wall of sound.

I can never decide between Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed. My head tells me that the latter is the weaker of the two, but both are gloriously decadent and a rip-roaring homage to the end of the 60’s. If you toss in the 45’s, Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Honky Tonk Women, you have everything the Stones needed to have released to be dubbed ‘the worlds greatest rock ‘n roll band’ There was much much great music before and after, but the legacy was cemented with their 1968-69 output. If they’d have spilt in January 1970, I’d like to believe they’d be critically revered in the same way.

Sticky Fingers. IMHO, it's the greatest rock and roll album ever made. Period.

You mean today or tomorrow?
Just like SPUD said, impossible to answer. So many great albums, sometimes make it difficult to choose. Some albums contain a song I really don't enjoy listening to, but when I put up an album I take that for granted.
Anyway, today it was ... Aftermath. Tomorrow?

Aftermath . It took me months of savings to buy it at the time from my paper round money and I still love it today.
