Those questions slightly haunted me for years.

Why Mick is chewing? Sure that big mouth is empty, because you cannot sing and bite a gum at the same time. Don't think it's a disorder either. So he would do it on purpose, to look more sexual, arousing, whatever. Now the side effect would be tired cheeks (try an empty chew during two minutes, your cheeks will hurt).

When was the apex of Chewin' Mick? Would say it match his mullet period (circa 1970 - 1980 AD). Because chewing and mulleting coincide to form the climax of Mick.

Similar to smoking a cigarette, when you're chewing gum you're putting off this sort of detached vibe, like you're not too concerned with whatever is going on around you. You're just kind of like "yeah, yeah whatever". It's about attitude, which Mick is a master of conveying.

It could also be that fresh breath is a priority for him.

Could be some combination of both.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who wondered about this! When you watch the Muddy Waters 81 footage from his club, you see Mick on stage and suddenly he starts smiling and chewing. I always wondered if he had gum on the side of his mouth. Also, Off The Hook on the TAMI show, you see Bill suddenly start chewing. There are other examples but these 2 are just off the top of my head.

Now, if we think is perpective... Chewin'Mick conjures Mick's big lips, which itself leads us to... what... The most recognizable, half-billion dollar-worth logo in music industry.

When Mick chews, he advertises for his own brand, which was designed on the look of his own features. This is both ego-rewarding, and money-making. Win-win.

Now we have another reason why Mick is a endless power-chewer.

I sing in a band for a living and almost always chew gum on stage. It really isn't much of a problem for me so I've always just assumed Mick liked to chew gum and never gave it any more thought than that.
