Yep. To a point. A lot of the 'slickness' of the Steel Wheels tour was borne from his own solo tours in 1988.

Definitely very scary. It looks like Jim Callahan (Stones security) who escorts Mick threw the crowd. I think after all the years of swinging on ropes over the crowd or the cherry picker back in 81, this might have been the moment where he said to himself ' I've pushed my luck enough.

I wasn’t there. But I saw all of his four Osaka shows, and he didn’t do it at any of these shows, either. FYI Mick’s Tokyo shows were the commemorative events for the opening of the massive Tokyo Dome. In Osaka, the shows were held at the Osaka-jo Hall (“Castle Hall” in English translation) which is an arena-sized venue.

And, yes, Gazza and NilsHolgersson are right. When The Rolling Stones finally set foot on the Japanese soil for the first time in 1990 and played unprecedented ten sold-out shows at the Tokyo Dome (remember, that was the culmination period of the economic “bubble” of the country), quite a few people felt it was like a revamped version of Mick’s solo shows they had been treated to two years before. Some even went on to confess there was a somewhat anticlimactic feel about the Stones show they had been dying to see for such a long time. Despite the undeniable “fake Stones” flavour, a number of Japanese fans retain a fond memory from Mick’s solo shows, and, truth be told, some of them seem to have been more impressed by them than the subsequent Steel Wheels Tour, the “real” Stones shows!

That video is really crazy to watch. What a nightmare it must have been for Mick and his body guards. Highly dramatic as Mick could have been killed. I don't know who vetoed that idea but the Asian fans loved their Mick Jagger so must that they could have hurt him badly. Facinating video to watch!Hey Gimme a shelter and he meant it.

Mick both underestimated and overlooked the hero worship mentality shared by the Japanese Rolling Stones fans who had been waiting for them to come and play for umpteen years, especially since the cancellation of their would-be first performances of the country in early 1973 that left a bitter taste among the fans. See, the crowd around him was completely star-struck!

Fast forward to St. Valentines Day, 1990. On the first ever show of The Rolling Stones in Japan, finishing Bitch, the second song on the setlist, Mick talked to the audience in polite Japanese, “We’ve been waiting for so long to come to Japan,” to which some responded from the floor, “Who’s been waiting!?” Go figure.

Mick was not in his best nick on these Tokyo shows. He caught a cold in Osaka and had to have the fourth and final Osaka show postponed from March 19 to 28 which as a result ended up as the final Japanese date. As far as I know, the bulk of the TV broadcasted performances are from March 22 which is the first show after three days-off hence his voice. FYI at least Brown Sugar and It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll are from March 23 with the guest appearance of Tina Turner who was touring Japan around the same time. In turn, Mick joined the encore of Tina’s Osaka-jo Hall show, March 27, for Honky Tonk Women, which drove the crowd nuts (I was there, too).

There is much of the '72-beginning-of-the-set-Jagger in that visual. His hair is like '72, he struts like he did then; and he is chewing gum like then with that cocky grin LOL.

It's such a weird combination of being a horrible performance, yet carried out with complete confidence.

Must have been very cool to have attended that! I didn't know about the cold, thanks for letting me know, that's something I was wondering about for a long time
