I’m on a Stones binge -

The videos are all coming out of storage.4 flicks, biggest bang, stones in exile etc..
I don’t listen to the officially released records but I pulled steel wheels out. I have one of those old limited edition metal cases and almost had to blow the dust off it.
There was a thread about it alwhile back and I figured why not, I hadn’t heard it in literally 20 years.
I was shocked at how good it was, free from all the unattainable expectations it wasn’t anything like I remembered. They were playing sooo good.
The concert footage from all the tours is just awe inspiring.
Having a drink and just sitting back watching a few hours of them playing without analyzing it is really fun.
We spend so much time talking about them here you sometimes forget why we do it, they are just a great, great band.

Could I suggest a band of peculiar British reprobates from the Notting Hill area on the early 1970s counter culture? The story comes complete with spiked yoghurt.

This is Hawkwind - Do Not Panic .....

If I could recommend one it is The Australian band the Skyhooks from the 70's. It is a short doc in 3 parts called "Making of Ego is not a Dirty Word".
What I love about it is that it's from before everyone became an expert and jaded about studios and rock'n roll. Everything is still special. The voice-over tells of a process called "Over dubbing" like it is something discovered on Mars.
The pity is that it was in 3 parts; part 2 focusing on the US producer who flies in; and the tension between him and some band members. Yet it seems that the parts have become hard to find.
Do any Down Under guys still have it?

Jim Jarmusch's 'Gimme Danger' was very good too. Because it has Iggy himself telling the tale. A good doc should have actual music by the act; possible the act him/herself speaking. There are countless, COUNTLESS! documentaries that I have clicked on, only to find the exact same 5'6 talking heads, the music critics yapping on and on. Now, many of these guys were in the thick of it. Knew the stars well. They may have shaped trends themselves by writing major stories in high profile publications. But by now we've heard them all too much.

Some very good docs are on the Tube about Herman Brood. I think they are all in Dutch. But non Dutch speakers can figure it out. He is very fascinating; in that he had a certain look down, and many of the attributes, but - his music sucked so bad. He persisted for a long time. But he becomes so much deeper IMO later in life, when focusing on is very good paintings, on the parrot living on his head. Like Lemmy it seems he endorses hard dope until the end.
He is one of the artists who scripted his own outro, and saw it through.

Can't hurt to plug it again "Why Should I Care", Big Star

Hollies documentary on Amazon Prime was pretty good since worthless talking head type music critics were not involved. Worth watching imo.

Haven't seen that one but "Nothing Can Hurt Me" was fantastic!

I had been to Memphis dozens of timed, and always heard of them but new nothing about them, turned me into a fan, I had to buy the soundtrack immediately.

"Muscle Shoals" is another great one.

"20 Feet from Stardom" is great, featuring Lisa Fisher and Merry Clayton.

And of course Keith's "Under the Influence".

It's the same one. I had to go back and revisit it to remember the title, and it had a different title; must have been a working title.

This made me think of "The Fearless Freaks", the Flaming Lips documentary - excellent.

And now I just thought of "Dig!" on Antony Newcombe and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Really good film. The maker, or producer of that film became my boss in later life.

That was almost disturbing. Maybe the best rock drummer ever but what a difficult person to deal with.
