Keith plays the solo, but it's way, way down in the mix. Yet it's mentioned as one of the Stones's greatest solos on record confused smiley

Half of the "solo" is the open G-licks from his other guitar.

. It doesn’t sound anything like Keith on Short and curlies. Its annoying noodling and sounds like one of Taylorsworst. It sounds a little like his playing on Don’t You Lie to Me from Ft Worth1972.And Keith never plays that fast and fluid as the guitar is playing at the outro

It lacks Taylor's vibrato and fluidity, but the melodic approach reminds me of Taylor. It's Keith and I like it. One of Keith's best noodling ever.

It’s a great solo, my personal fav of his. Very lyrical.

It’s Richards playing in standard tuning, playing over the top of the vocals. In the studio! That’s why I take his comments with a grain of salt. That’s such a throw away song all around. One of the lamest songs of that stellar era.

Richards could play fast, he just didn’t. He never really ventured up and down the neck whilst playing solos but stayed in one or two positions playing pentatonic blues based stuff. Listen to the Dallas Rehearsals, he’s playing lead all over the place with many fast licks. It lacks the harmonic composition of Taylor’s solos, IMO.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned It's All Over Now . . . . or did I miss it?

HBK

That's my first choice too: It's All Over Now.
Others:
- Down the Road Apiece
- Sympathy for the Devil (both the studio version and the Get Yer Ya Ya's version (both Keith and Mick T.))
- Tie You Up (Pain Of Love)

I think you can't mess with Gilmore here - he's on a complete different plane.

I LOVE his playing and his Strat sound! And I keep playing those albums, from Obscured By Clouds on, even Ummaguma ...

But a guitar solo is not what I really xpect from my beloved band on this scale, to be honest. Mick T. and Ronnie (especially during the last tours as he's getting better - listen to his solos on GS for instance or his flawlss slide on Stripped - LIV!!) did much to improve the sound and virtuosity of the Stones.

But to answer to a Gilmore solo ... hmmm, that's a tough choice.

Maybe, the band as a unit can answer that, not precisely in terms of viruosity but intensity. Try this maybe for an answer:

Taylor on slide, Keith on lead. And it sounds classic Keith. Only he plays more than he used to in that era.

IORR is the most Tayloresk studio album, there we find the best solo efforts: Time Waits For No One, Dance Little Sister (Mick T), but also: Ain't too Proud to Beg (Keith). And I remember: Keith on Hold On To Your Hat, I suppose, on Steel Wheels. At least it is the fastest and most fluid effort by Keith (if it is really Keith).

Keith's Short And Curlies deserves a mention. Many still think it's Taylor playing smiling smiley

In fact, I love that song, and I confess, that I thought it is MT.

Actually, I stand corrected. I listened again and I agree it is Keith. I'm pretty sure the slide in the intro is Taylor but I agree the rest if it is Taylor-esque noodling by Keith

It`s hard to name just 1 solo. But i have always liked "Hand of fate". Beautiful played solo (by a none Stone... eye rolling smiley)

Then there is "All Down the line" and "Heartbraker" and "Sway" and "CYHMK" and many more..... cool smiley

Not to forget: Keith on Let Me Go, IMO a perfect simple solo on a Rock'n Roll song.
