Yes that's right, not a wise decision - especially since Jagger lost his voice after the partying

Coked-out with Belushi all week ...
before, during, after rehearsal ...
before show...
Culminating in Jagger's sub-par vocal performance on the live show

Are the full rehearsals available in the Stones Vault, with Summer Romance and I've Been Loving You Too Long? My CD copy has corrupted.

They even changed the key for BOB because of Mick’s voice. In D on the show.

Ronnie goes missing, probably snorting coke upstairs with Belushi. "Rhonda!" they call.

"Ronnie you're part of the group!"

Mick "Sorry, Lorne ... this must be costing a fortune."

I have watched this again today because I love it and this period in Stones history and I think that Mick's vocals are good in the rehearsal versus the actual broadcast show later in the evening . I get a kick out of the last vocal where Mick sings "please f my wife and don't come back " Poor Bianca ! If I could time travel I would go right back to 1978 and follow the summer tour from start to finish . The Stones so wild and raw and ragged and just such a live wire and so primed .

What always amazes me about the SNL Performance is that anyone could go on national TV so @#$%& up.

I remember staying up to see it when it was first broadcast. Convinced some friends to watch with me.They all thought it sucked bad. I sat there with a look of chagrin because Sir Mick sounded so bad.

Yes, er, most likely.

I never understand why everyone is so convinced that Jagger's partying is what took his voice. Everyone else was doing the same thing and didn't seem to have problems with their voices. It could just be that he had a cold or just sang too much that week which I think is must likely.

I saw Paul Shafer ( who was on the show at the time ) say that the Stones were so good during rehearsals that people were worried that they were going to totally upstage the rest of the show. He then said that they blew it and came in flat which is obvious. After watching this I don't know what Shafer was talking about. They sound awful here to. They did rehearse alot more than just this as I have seen pictures of them playing someone else that week.

Not being a musician I can never understand how a band can sound so good during the tour and then so lousy a couple of months later. I saw Jagger interviewed in 1979 where he was talking about how well the performance went and how good they sounded..Huh

It holds true to this day that the Stones occasionally forget to bring the mojo. When that occurs it blows the whole show if you're sincere how you feel about them. Needless to say it's always idiotic to write them off because of such an experience.

Mick sounded bad because he was sick as a dog.
That's it.

Yes. And it also shows the power that the Stones had in NYC, over Lorne Michaels and Schaffer, Belushi who by all accounts turned into teenyboppers around them.
The Replacements a few years later were banned for life from SNL for much lesser offences.
