Thousands of Canadians died because COVID-19 delayed surgeries, doctors say

OTTAWA—Canada’s doctors say the COVID-19 pandemic took a staggering toll on the health of Canadians, including those who didn’t contract it, with delayed surgeries and procedures costing thousands of lives and continuing to ravage people’s health.

In a new report prepared by Deloitte for the Canadian Medical Association, researchers said it would cost at least $1.3 billion to end some of the most dangerous backlogs in key health services by June 2022 and return to pre-pandemic service levels.

The report said in one four-month period alone last year, the number of “excess deaths” in Canada not related to COVID-19 infections was more than 4,000 for the period August to December 2020.

That’s about five per cent greater than the expected mortality rate for a normal year and in line with excess mortality in international jurisdictions as well.

It’s also in line with numbers that Statistics Canada has reported for the first 18 months of the pandemic, from March 2020 to the beginning of July 2021. The agency says there were an estimated 19,501 excess deaths in Canada, or 5.3 per cent more deaths than would be expected if there were no pandemic after accounting for changes in the population, such as aging.

To date, 29,618 Canadians have died of COVID-19 directly. When the pandemic first hit, medical professionals switched to virtual consultations with patients which helped offset a bigger toll.

But in-person specialist visits with people suffering from chronic diseases plunged in the early months of the pandemic, and are still lagging.

Nearly a year into the crisis, by January this year, visits for patients with hypertensive heart disease were still 60 per cent lower than usual, and 87 per cent lower for patients with diabetes.

“Missed or delayed chronic disease management can lead to serious and expensive complications, like heart attacks or even death,” said the report.

The report estimated backlogs in Ontario for key cancer screening services: it lists a gap of 389,347 Pap tests, 307,617 mammograms, and 297,299 fecal tests that detect colon cancer that needed to be performed.

Other services like home care assessments by nursing home care providers — which are a form of health screening for seniors to determine what their health needs are — declined during the first wave between March and April 2020 by 44 per cent, and while they rebounded somewhat, it said the majority are still virtual appointments.

The report looked at backlogs for eight procedures: breast cancer surgeries, coronary artery bypass graft, CT scans, MRI scans, colectomies, knee replacements, cataract surgery and hip replacements, and found backlogs due to COVID delays ranged from 46 to 118 days.

What`s the use of vaccination when new mutations pop up?

The new variations come up because of individuals who have chosen to not be vaccinated. This fact is what causes the virus to continue to mutate.

Can new mutations not form in a vaccinated person then?

Nate

New mutants typically show up in populations where the vaccination rate is low, i.e. among larger non-vaccinated populations.

People in poor countries do not "choose not to vaccinate". They do not have access to vaccine. And they can't just "work from home", like many do in rick countries.

Vaccinated people may get covid-19, sure they do, but those are not any big source of mutants. The virus die out soon, it does not play around for weeks mutating again and again.

Mutants typically happen in a unvaccinated populations with limited health systems where people are left on their own sick and they continue to be among other people so that the mutant may move on from the sick people into the rest of the world.

Population and vaccination rate:

USA - 330 million people - 60% fully vaccinated
Africa - 1300 million people - 7% fully vaccinated

Tracking Coronavirus Vaccinations Around the World (New York Times live data)

Less than 10% of African countries to hit key COVID-19 vaccination goal (WHO

Isn't South Africa's vaccination rate a lot higher than the rest of Africa though??

Maybe it didn't really originate there though but was just noticed there however.

South Africa have 25% fully vaccinated people. In a population of 60 million, that means 45 million not fully vaccinated.

The new variant is called Omicron. It is NOT called the "South Africa variant". It was South African scientists who first warned about it. Still, nobody do know the origin.

The point is we need the entire world to be vaccinated, not just the rich countries, otherwise we will have to be in a pandemic state for years to come.

Even vaccination rates of 70% are too low for "hers" immunity thus the problem with Covid pretty much everywhere. South Africa is one of the richer countries in Africa and they don't have the means to vaccinate their population. To prevent new strains from developing vaccines need to make it to the poorer countries and the richer countries need to increase vaccinations above the 50%-75% rates.

Well, SA's vaccination rate IS higher than most of African countries (except for Tunisia and Morocco), but still dramatically low.

Interesting map. Looks like Chile, Cuba and Oman? have a very high rate. South-african variant just shows how volatile the Situation will remain if vaccines cant be shared more Equally. Kind of pathetic how Western european adults crave for a third (booster)shot. Why think of anybody else?

It is not the South African variant any more than Delta was the Indian variant or the initial variant was the China virus.

What is pathetic, short sighted and extremely stupid is western governments not donating enough vaccines to poorer nations and the companies producing the vaccines not agreeing to licence them more freely due to nothing but greed.

I will be eligible for a booster soon here in the UK but I would personally rather donate it to someone else who hasn't had a chance to even get the first shot yet.The problem is that if I don't take the booster it will not be donated and may even end up in the bin just as other excess vaccines have done.

A problem with freeing or donating vaccine is the technology required to produce, transport and store them. One could argue, that with the huge profits already made, the vaccines could be made available at much lower prices. I would dispute the prudence of trying to mass vaccinate the developing world, when their health systems don't seem to be overwhelmed by patients and with the limited time the vaccines are effective it could be like a screw that never tightens up.

In future, people may well look back with shock over the methods applied at present to try and deal with Covid-19!

True that. It's gotten so frantic that the bigger picture got lost completely. People don't even realize the scope of the infringement of their rights anymore

Today the European Union is saying the time has come to give very serious consideration to mandatory vaccination.

More riots on the streets soon no doubt and although that will not solve anything I don't blame people for being so angry as this is utterly outrageous.

They can go ahead with the vaccine mandate only to find out that it won't solve their problem. They'll be washing their hands until the bones stick out. It's a mental issue at this point

Pretty obvious, those who are against vaccination are threatening riots and those who are against Covid support the mandates.

What do the anti-vaxxers propose to minimize the impact of Covid?

Absolute nonsense, many people who have taken the vaccine are completely against mandatory vaccination.

If you're fattening up your population you'll need corresponding healthcare capacities. Not having that and ostracizing people who advocate a healthy lifestyle "in the face of the pandemic" will leave you no choice but to blame evrything on the virus

How many though? Got the statistics?
Sure, there are people who chose to be vaccinated and don't support mandatory vaccinations.
I have a feeling these particular riots might not be of their interest though.
What are people counting on really anyway? That the virus will mutate to something that's not dangerous at all? It is possible, so is the opposite. There is no freedom to do whatever someone pleases in a society and unless scientists come up with a better idea mandatory vaccinations are the only way whether people want it or not.

In all nations of the UK, since 1984 it has been illegal to force anyone to accept any kind of medical treatment against their will. I have personally chosen to be vaccinated but people have the right to refuse it.

If the vaccine was proven to be 100% effective and safe, mandatory vaccination would be a bit more understandable, but as of now neither have been fully proven to be true.
Long term effects are unknown, there can be side effects, and booster shots are now being recommended with more sure to follow as time marches on and variations continue to mutate.
I'm vaccinated, but can understand those that are against mandatory vaccinations as it seems a bit extreme considering all the unknown circumstances and risks.
It would never happen in the US - in fact many of the proposed lesser mandates are already being suspended and/or struck down by the courts before they even begin.

What are the options for not letting the politicians do whatever they please and take things further in terms of limiting freedom and free speech?

There are many ways to deal with covid that has been demonstrated to be very effective and they keep getting censored to the best of their ability. WHich is also why so many people refuse the vaccines, they don´t believe the politicians and the pharmaceudical industry because of past history of deception and lies (ll proven obviously).m

Yes, when booster shots first became available in the UK there were quite a few people saying they would refuse it so it could be used elsewhere - but as Nate says it was made clear that doing so wouldn't actually help anyone: the vaccines would just be wasted if not used.

Oslo Norway have got a major case of Omicron covid-19 variant spread. A person arriving from South Africa joined in at the Scatec company Christmas party with 120 employees Friday Nov 25. Now 50-60 people from the party are testing positive, the variant is Omicron. The party was open for fully vaccinated people only.

Omikronvarianten er bekreftet i utbruddet på Frogner i Oslo
Mellom 50 og 60 personer er nå bekreftet smittet etter utbruddet på Frogner. Oslo kommune opplyser at omikronvarianten er påvist.

Norway Government press conference today just finished, following new info about how fast Omicron is spreading, basically through air to more than 50% of all people in the same room as one person being infected: Mask mandate, max 100 people at private parties, max 600 people at indoor public events.

The new variant Omicron is a game changer, multiple times faster in spreading, if you are in the same room as a person infected with Omicron, the chance is more than 50% you will get covid-19, even if you are fully vaccinated.
