I thought I heard somewhere The Stones wouldn't play anywhere where there were mandates for vaccination....But I agree proof of vaccination or a negative covid test is good in lieu of cancellation.....

I've never liked mathematics....

Expert shares equation that shows even a 100% vaccination rate is not enough to stop Delta variant

Delta

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Earlier in the pandemic, experts had hoped if we can get 75% of Americans vaccinated, we can contain the coronavirus. Thursday, we're at just over 50% vaccinated. But 75% is no longer enough. The Delta variant has changed the equation, literally. A professor of epidemiology at Boston University recently tweeted equations that explain why Delta has made it mathematically impossible to beat the virus now with just the vaccine: Dr. Ellie Murray was on ABC7 News 3 p.m. program "Getting Answers" Thursday to share her calculations. First, we have to understand a virus' effective Reproductive Number, or Re, the number of people an infected person will transmit to. It needs to stay under one, as in each infected person transmits to fewer than one other person, for us to suppress and beat the virus.

With the original COVID-19 strain, each infected person passed it on to an estimated 3 people without intervention. At our nation's current 50% vaccination rate, and vaccine efficacy at 95%, the Re is 1.575, not good enough. But at 75% vaccination rate, a lofty goal that mirrors the Bay Area but far surpasses much of the nation, the Re is 0.86, enough to defeat the virus:
Re=3*(1-0.5*0.95) = 1.575
Re=3(1-.75*.95)=0.86 <1

However, the Delta variant is much more transmissible, so Dr. Murray replaced the 3 with an 8, the number of people one person might pass it on to without mitigation. She also brought the vaccine efficacy rate to 85%, while acknowledging the latest studies suggest the number could be even lower. And now, you can see the Re at 50% vaccination is 4.6, much too high. And even if we achieve a national 75% vaccination rate, the Re would still be 2.9. With one infected person infecting nearly 3 others, that will not end the pandemic.

Even if 100% of people got vaccinated, that would not bring the effective reproductive number under 1. Hence, other mitigation measures are needed, such as masking:
Re=8(1-.5*.85) = 4.6
Re=8(1-.75*.85)=2.9

Even if the 50% who've already gotten the shots received a booster, that would make only a small dent and not nearly as impactful as getting new people vaccinated. Even if we can't get rid of the virus entirely, the vaccines can help get rid of the "disease" in the form of worst outcomes. She says the math shows that the end game is vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate.

OK, I like math and this is understandable, so thank you.

What I don't get is how the delta virus peaked in India and UK, and yet clearly you're far from 100% vaccination in either of those countries.

What does that mean, that you can have 'the peak' and after that the virus will just continue, albeit at a slower pace, until everyone gets it?

Or are these peaks to be followed by new ones later, and if so, why is that? There are people that are predicting that the US will have it's peak in a few weeks...why is that, if we're heading into a season that would traditionally be more dangerous than the summer?

Fast-spreading COVID-19 Delta variant is starting to hit corporate America

Delta

The stock market continues to ignore worsening headlines on the COVID-19 Delta variant front and climb to fresh records. But given a shift in tone lately from corporate America, perhaps investors should be on high alert. Companies that had been bullish on the economic recovery from the depths of the pandemic are becoming increasingly cautious as the variant spreads. Here are three household names that have recently warned of a financial impact from the COVID-19 Delta variant. Investors may be ignoring the commentary below, but it could prove to be an earnings headwind in the current quarter — one that isn't priced into stock prices.

Disney. While Disney generally impressed investors with its most recent earnings — notably by reaching 116 million subscribers for its streaming service Disney+ — the COVID-19 Delta variant lurks as a potential profit headwind in coming quarters. Disney (DIS) says it's seeing a pickup in cancellations for visits to its parks. "In terms of impact of the Delta variant, we see strong demand for our parks continuing. And the primary noise that we’re seeing right now are really around group or convention cancellations. In other words, large groups that are coming in relatively short term. But, on the whole, we see really strong demand for our parks. In fact, our park reservations now are above our Q3 attendance levels. And as you just saw with our earnings announcement, our Q3 attendance levels were pretty darn good. So, we’re still bullish about our park business going forward," Disney CEO Bob Chapek told analysts on an earnings call Thursday evening.

Airbnb. Similar to Disney, Airbnb had a solid second quarter as travel resumed following people getting their COVID-19 vaccine. The company's second quarter sales surged 299% to $1.3 billion from a year ago. Adjusted operating profits clocked in at $217 million, much improved from a $59 million operating loss. Despite the rebound, Airbnb (ABNB ) CFO David Stephenson warned that the COVID-19 Delta variant is beginning to take a toll. "So as we exit Q2 and come into Q3, we have a combination of fewer bookings for the fall, just given the nature of some of the seasonality and any kind of impact potentially on COVID concerns going into early Q3.So we're not seeing a substantial deceleration." Airbnb baked this caution into its third quarter outlook — it sees bookings down compared to the second quarter and versus the third quarter of 2019.

Southwest. As Yahoo Finance's Myles Udland writes in the Morning Brief newsletter, Southwest dropped a surprise onto the heads of investors this week with a Delta variant warning of its own. "The company has recently experienced a deceleration in close-in bookings and an increase in close-in trip cancellations in August 2021, which are believed to be driven by the recent rise in COVID-19 cases associated with the Delta variant. Based on the assumption that COVID-19 cases remain elevated in the near-term and current revenue trends in August continue into September, the Company's current outlook for third quarter 2021 operating revenues has worsened by an estimated three to four points from its previous outlook three weeks ago, compared with third quarter 2019," Southwest warned in a new SEC filing. Southwest expects third quarter operating revenue to drop 15% to 20%.

Thanks Dandy. I think we should all agree that if you're going to post 'news' that you should actually have a link to back it up, so we're not having to do our own research to verify it.

Disappointing we have people on here perpetuating garbage.

They also wore masks and have been massively vaccinated citizens. Ivermectin is an anti parasitic treatment for farm animals and in some cases for humans (lice, scabies). CDC does not recommend it to treat Covid.

There should be a clinical trial using a cocktail of Ivermectin, Hydrochroroquine and Clorox amongst the unvaccinated Covid patients. I bet there will be enough believers who will sign up for the trial. Those who participated in the Tuskegee Experiment were not volunteers, but I would bet we have enough willing for this trial.

Just posted by Toronto Star:

12:30 p.m. (updated): The federal government will soon require vaccination for federally regulated workers, Minster for Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc announced Friday.

Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra also announced that passengers on commercial planes, inter-provincial trains and marine vessels will have to be vaccinated.

The mandate, which is set to be in effect in the fall, comes amid a looming fourth wave of COVID-19's highly transmissible Delta variant.

The Killers August 19 club show at NYC's Terminal 5 requires proof of vaccination and negative COVID-19 test 48 hours prior to the show:

You are buying a ticket to a show that will require all attendees be both vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19.
YOU UNDERSTAND AND AGREE that in order to be allowed in the venue you must:
1) be fully vaccinated (i.e., 14 days post-final dose of the Pfizer, Moderna, or J&J vaccine)
2) provide evidence of a negative test result for COVID-19 (PCR or antigen), taken within 48 hours before the show.
Mask wearing will be encouraged throughout the venue.

NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY FAILURE TO MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS

I'm sure a couple of people used it in the U.S. as well. If you don't have an actual answer, it's better not to answer. I don't have super high expectations of you, don't worry.

I thought we agreed not to interact. It's one thing to try and get knowledge here and another to introduce lies.

You said India's introduction of that drug was the reason they bent the curve. It wasn't, as Dandy pointed out.

You couldn't even pull a source for this 'information'.

So you either lied purposely, or introduced a lie into this thread where we're having an actual discussion and trying to enhance understanding.

For some reason this bothers you...then don't hang out in this thread. But please stop trying to pollute it with nonsense. You just look like a no-mind jerk.
