If you are afraid of the needle, then bear in mind it is less painful than a mosquito bite.

If you are afraid of getting sick, dead or permanently damaged from the vaccine, because you read about it on alternative media, then forget about it. Millions and millions have taken the vaccine. It is as safe as drinking water.

If you are afraid of what your religious or political leader is saying, or what your "smart" friends are saying, then forget it. The vaccine is safe, and it is bringing an end to the pandemic.

Don't take the vaccine because you have to, but because it will help us all put an end to this misery.

The alternative is grim. Just look at those countries with low vaccination percentage. They are now going into lock down.

If you still not want to get vaccinated, then think twice. Alpha was mean. Delta is worse. The vaccine is highly effective in preventing serious illness from both of these variants. Most of those who are in hospital now with covid-19 are non-vaccinated people.

This is a change from when I bought my Dead & Co (October) and Avett Brothers (November) tix a few weeks back. Dead & Co only require proof of vaccination for the GA pit. Avett Bros have the standard disclaimer of accept risk of COVID. This is as of this morning on the Ticketmaster site.
The tixs are going up for sale if no refund is granted. I wouldn't have bought them if I knew this was going to be another outbreak...just not worth it.

Delta breakthrough infections likely contagious

Among people infected by the Delta variant of the coronavirus, fully vaccinated people with "breakthrough" infections may be just as likely as unvaccinated people to spread the virus to others, new research suggests. The higher the amount of coronavirus in the nose and throat, the more likely the patient will infect others. In one Wisconsin county, after Delta became predominant, researchers analyzed viral loads on nose-and-throat swab samples obtained when patients were first diagnosed. They found similar viral loads in vaccinated and unvaccinated patients, with levels often high enough to allow shedding of infectious virus. "A key assumption" underlying current regulations aimed at slowing COVID-19 transmission "is that those who are vaccinated are at very low risk of spreading the virus to others," said study coauthor Katarina Grande of Public Health Madison & Dane County in Madison, Wisconsin. The findings, however, indicate "that vaccinated people should take steps to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus to others," she added. In a separate study from Singapore, researchers found that while Delta viral loads were similar in vaccinated and unvaccinated patients, the viral loads decreased faster in the vaccinated group. The Wisconsin [bit.ly] and Singapore [bit.ly] studies were both posted on Saturday on medRxiv ahead of peer review.

Lambda variant shows vaccine resistance

The Lambda variant of the coronavirus, first identified in Peru and now spreading in South America, is highly infectious and more resistant to vaccines than the original version of the virus the emerged from Wuhan, China, Japanese researchers have found. In laboratory experiments, they found that three mutations in Lambda's spike protein, known as RSYLTPGD246-253N, 260 L452Q and F490S, help it resist neutralization by vaccine-induced antibodies. Two additional mutations, T76I and L452Q, help make Lambda highly infectious, they found. In a paper posted on Wednesday on bioRxiv [bit.ly] ahead of peer review, the researchers warn that with Lambda being labeled a "Variant of Interest" by the World Health Organization, rather than a "Variant of Concern," people might not realize it is a serious ongoing threat. Although it is not clear yet whether this variant is more dangerous than the Delta now threatening populations in many countries, senior researcher Kei Sato of the University of Tokyo believes "Lambda can be a potential threat to the human society."

Third mRNA dose may boost antibody quantity, but not quality

Among fully vaccinated people who never had COVID-19, getting a third dose of an mRNA vaccine from Pfizer /BioNTech or Moderna would likely increase levels of antibodies, but not antibodies that are better able to neutralize new virus variants, Rockefeller University researchers reported on Thursday on bioRxiv [bit.ly] ahead of peer review. They note that in COVID-19 survivors, the immune system's antibodies evolve during the first year, becoming more potent and better able to resist new variants. In 32 volunteers who never had COVID-19, they found that antibodies induced by mRNA vaccines did evolve between the first and second shots. But five months later, vaccine-induced antibodies were "equivalent" to those seen after the second dose, with "little measurable improvement" in the antibodies' ability to neutralize a broad variety of new variants, said coauthor Michel Nussenzweig. Therefore, he said, giving those individuals a third dose of the same vaccine would likely result in higher levels of antibodies that remain less effective against variants. "At the moment, the vaccine remains protective against serious infection," Nussenzweig said. "Should we learn that efficacy is indeed waning for serious infection, which is not really the case to date," then a booster dose of "whatever is available" might become appropriate, he added. Should an updated vaccine become available that protects against specific variants, "then that would be the choice."

Yes, I think the people to be trusted on this are drunk, at a Rolling Stones concert. Can you imagine them when they're turned away at the gate? It won't be pretty. The Stones must have announced these dates during that short window we thought Covid behind us. Thanks to the unvaccinated, it will be even worse.

A lot of right wing nutsos whine that, "The vaccinated shouldn't wear masks." Well, me might not, but the unvaccinated are the same people who can't be trusted to wear a mask to begin with. And the unvaccinated are more likely to infect them, so they should be wearing masks. When will this triumph of the stupid be over in America?

I'd bet the Stones and other Famous People could get a lot of people to get the Vax if they offered "Free Tickets" or some other incentives of that nature....

She's fully vaccinated, yet kidney problems caused a compromised immune system...not looking too good for her unfortunately, but hope for the best.

Sad and hits close to home being such a long time friend of my sister - other than daspy, the only person I know who has contacted the virus.

So sad...hopefully she pulls through. I think the ventilator stats have improved from the early days of covid. My doctor caught it and was on ventilator for a month but pulled through.

That really sucks. I have a friend with a liver transplant who is concerned despite the vaccinations and saw a friend today who lost his mom to Covid a few months ago. Meanwhile the flat earthers insist its no big deal.

An evolving virus and 18 months of ever-changing pandemic messaging have left Americans angry, exhausted and skeptical of public health advice.

WASHINGTON — A week of public health reversals from the White House and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has left Americans with pandemic whiplash, sowing confusion about coronavirus vaccines and mask-wearing as the Delta variant upends what people thought they knew about how to stay safe.

Vaccines remain effective and highly protective against hospitalization and death, even among those infected with the extremely contagious Delta variant. Mask-wearing prevents transmission of the virus to those most at risk.

But the crisis President Biden once thought he had under control is changing shape faster than the country can adapt. An evolving virus, new scientific discoveries, deep ideological divides and 18 months of ever-changing pandemic messaging have left Americans skeptical of public health advice. So although the White House had promised a “summer of joy,” the nation is instead caught in a summer of confusion.

“While we desperately want to be done with this pandemic, Covid-19 is clearly not done with us, and so our battle must last a little longer,” Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, the director of the C.D.C., told reporters on Monday. “This is hard. This is heavy. But we are in this together.”An evolving virus and 18 months of ever-changing pandemic messaging have left Americans angry, exhausted and skeptical of public health advice.

Monday was another day that underscored the crosscurrents for the nation’s leaders as their efforts at a disciplined public health campaign collided yet again with the chaotic nature of the pandemic. Instead of a consistent message, the result was another dizzying jumble of news stories and divergent announcements.

In Louisiana, a state with one of the lowest vaccination rates, Gov. John Bel Edwards reinstated an indoor mask mandate, as did health officials in San Francisco and six other Bay Area counties. But in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio declined to do so, even though such a move would have been in line with C.D.C. guidelines.

The virus continued to scramble traditional politics. In left-leaning Chicago, city officials announced that more than 385,000 people had attended the four-day Lollapalooza music festival — and Mayor Lori Lightfoot defended it.
In Washington, Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina and a longtime supporter of former President Donald J. Trump, announced that he had tested positive for the coronavirus, but said his symptoms had been mild, which he attributed to having received the vaccine.

“I feel like I have a sinus infection,” Mr. Graham wrote on Twitter. “Without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now. My symptoms would be far worse.”

Nationally, caseloads continued to climb. The country reported a daily average of nearly 80,000 new infections on Sunday, up from about 12,000 in early July, according to a New York Times database. A spate of scary news stories about unvaccinated people dying from Covid-19 appears to have accomplished what Mr. Biden could not: The nation finally reached the White House’s target, initially set for July 4, of having 70 percent of American adults at least partially vaccinated.

Some experts say the C.D.C. is to blame for some of the confusion. After saying in May that vaccinated people could go maskless both indoors and outdoors, the agency did an about-face last week, once again recommending indoor masking for everyone — vaccinated or not — in places where the virus is spreading rapidly.

Only days later did a leaked document deliver the grim reasoning: Delta is as contagious as chickenpox and spreading even among the fully vaccinated, which puts unvaccinated people at risk and poses the threat of yet another viral mutation that could evade vaccines.

“The Delta variant is different from prior strains,” Dr. Walensky said. “I understand this is all frustrating news, and I share this frustration.”

A senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the administration’s thinking, conceded on Monday that many Americans remained perplexed after the flurry of sometimes difficult and seemingly contradictory information.

Another administration official said Mr. Biden would address the nation later this week — the second time in less than a week — to reiterate and clarify his main takeaway points: The vaccines are safe and effective. The reason even vaccinated people have to mask up again is that so many people are unvaccinated. So go get your shots and tell your friends and neighbors to do the same.

“The thing that hasn’t changed is the need to get vaccinated; the thing that hasn’t changed is that masks do work and they protect you,” said Dr. Carlos del Rio, an infectious disease specialist at Emory University who lectures on crisis communications.

But Dr. del Rio said the C.D.C. made a misstep in May when it told vaccinated Americans they did not need to wear masks — not because the science behind the recommendation was wrong, but because the move led everyone to doff their masks and prompted states, localities and retail businesses to abandon their mask requirements, which enabled the Delta variant to flourish.

“That was scientifically correct from a virology standpoint,” Dr. del Rio said of the earlier recommendation. “It was wrong from a behavioral science standpoint.”

The new recommendation — that even vaccinated people wear masks in areas of the country where the virus is spreading rapidly — is far more nuanced, leaving state and local leaders to navigate their own paths and making it difficult for residents to know how to behave. Republican opponents of the administration, meanwhile, have lampooned the shifting advice.

In the House, Republican lawmakers revolted against a mask requirement even as Sean Hannity of Fox News urged his viewers to get vaccinated. Yet former President Barack Obama plans to go ahead with a star-studded party on Martha’s Vineyard to celebrate his 60th birthday with hundreds of people. A spokeswoman for Mr. Obama said that the party was being held outside and not in an area of high transmission, and that the former president would abide by all C.D.C. guidelines.

Across the country, the questions are piling up again: Can I eat inside at a restaurant or bar? What about a sporting event? Should children be wearing masks when they go to school in September? Will a vaccine for children be available by then and will it be required? What — exactly — are people supposed to be scared of? And what should they do about it?

There is no single answer. The risk is different for different people, depending on whether they are vaccinated and the level of virus in their community. At the same time, the pandemic is fast-moving and ever-changing, which is part of the C.D.C.’s challenge.

“They are in a bit of a no-win situation — this is very challenging to message on,” said Jen Kates, a senior vice president of the Kaiser Family Foundation. “What’s happening is this is real-time public health messaging in a pandemic around data that is just emerging. That is just the reality, and that doesn’t necessarily provide comfort or always the kind of answers that people understand.

At the White House on Monday, Jen Psaki, the press secretary, confronted the messaging challenge head on. She cited statistics showing that the vaccines prevent most illness and death, insisted that the country would not go back to large-scale shutdowns and noted that cases like that of Mr. Graham remain exceedingly rare.

But clarity has been elusive as the virus — along with the scientific understanding about how best to combat it — has continued to morph, sometimes day by day.

Even as the C.D.C. has recommended mask-wearing for everyone in areas of rapid spread, the White House has been making a different and somewhat contradictory push. To encourage vaccination, Mr. Biden announced last week that unvaccinated federal workers — but not those who have their shots — will have to wear masks at work.

Experts agree that some of the confusion could have been avoided if the C.D.C. and Dr. Walensky had been more transparent and simply released the data underlying the latest mask recommendations, which later leaked in the news media.

In addition, Dr. del Rio said, the agency mangled its most important message — that Americans need to get vaccinated — by focusing so much on “breakthrough infections” in vaccinated people, which are still very rare.

“It has distracted from the point that we need to make, which is that breakthrough infections are very uncommon and your biggest risk continues to be being unvaccinated,” he said. “I’m concerned that because people are so focused on breakthroughs, we are losing the forest for the trees.”

Public health experts often say that in any infectious disease outbreak, messaging is not part of the response: It is the response. The C.D.C. has an entire arm of its website devoted to training for health communicators, with links to podcasts, sample social media posts and a 120-page “Health Communication Playbook.”

“This isn’t just about science,” Ms. Kates said. “It’s about human behavior and decisions that actual people have to make, and those decisions affect the course of the pandemic.”

Public health communications are also inherently political, because the message comes from political leaders. That, too, has posed a challenge for the White House. When Mr. Biden became president, he vowed that he and his White House aides would not meddle in C.D.C. decisions, as was the case during the Trump administration.

But Dr. Tom Frieden, a former C.D.C. director, said in a recent interview with NPR that the Biden White House may have gone “too far in the other direction,” leaving Dr. Walensky, who has no prior government experience, and the C.D.C. to manage their own messaging without input from White House communications experts.

“You sometimes hear people say, ‘Let’s get the politics out of public health,’” Dr. Frieden said. “Well, public health is the activity of communities getting safer and healthier. And there are many political decisions that happen during that process. What’s problematic is when partisanship gets in the way.”

In one study, the researchers sought to determine whether alternatives to high-efficiency N95 masks reserved for health care workers could offer similar protection for hospital personnel in the event of shortages. They tested the filtration ability of expired N95 masks, N95 masks that had been sterilized for reuse, and dozens of other face mask alternatives. The results show that both expired N95 masks and sterilized N95 masks provided the same level of protection as new N95 masks with greater than 95 percent filtration. Other alternatives provided less protection. For example, surgical masks with ties provided 71.5 percent filtration, while surgical masks with ear loops only provided 38.1 percent.

AND, if the only thing that was the outcome was that the victims were ultimately the ones that perpetuated the garbage, then they sort of put it on themselves...BUT, innocent people, kids, they get sideswiped as collateral damage. That's the sad outcome.

Thanks shattered. Just found out today from my sister, and evidently everything had quickly spiraled downward in the last week or so.

As for not having time farting around looking for Lucky Dips when they went on sale the other day, that was due to a far less important issue, but it did keep me preoccupied.

Louisiana set to break record for COVID hospitalizations: 'Health care delivery is in peril'

Hospitalizations for the coronavirus in Louisiana have spiked to never-before-seen levels, breaking the previous high set in early January, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Monday.
"Looking ahead to tomorrow, we've reported more hospitalizations than at any other point in the pandemic," said Edwards. "We're the worst in the country in terms of this COVID surge, and that is because of the delta variant, which is a game-changer." Edwards did not give the exact figure, but said it was more than the official count of 1,984 that was announced Monday at noon. The previous record for hospitalizations was set Jan. 7, during the virus's third wave, when there were 2,069 people in hospitals statewide and vaccines were extremely limited. "I have every shred of confidence, unless something miraculous happens, that tomorrow we will have the largest number of hospitalized COVID patients throughout Louisiana than at any prior point," said state health officer Dr. Joe Kanter.

The number of people in hospitals has increased at a rate hospital staff said is not sustainable. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana's largest standalone hospital, accepted 33 emergency federal workers Monday to help stanch the flow of coronavirus patents. It is not enough. "We are no longer giving adequate care to these patients," said Dr. Catherine O'Neal, the hospital's chief medical officer and a professor at LSU Health New Orleans, painting a dire picture for patients -- those hospitalized for coronavirus or for any other reason. Twenty-three patients were waiting on Monday to transfer from other hospitals into OLOL's ICU, she said. But there are not enough people to care for them. "I have seen people in four-wheeler accidents and motorcycle accidents and farming accidents in the last two weeks, who sat in their ERs in their small towns," said O'Neal. "Those are my people. Those are your family members. And when they get maimed, they are not coming to a trauma center, because there are no more beds."

As the numbers of hospitalized patients continue to rise, the quality of care will inevitably decrease across the state, said Susan Hassig, Tulane University epidemiologist. And not just for coronavirus patients -- anyone visiting the hospital will be affected by the strain too many sick patients puts on the health care system. "Health care delivery is in peril," said Hassig. "It’s frustrating people don't seem to realize that." At North Oaks Hospital in Hammond, CEO Michelle Sutton described a waiting room of 80 patients and stretchers lined up in hallways. Surgeries for conditions like brain aneurysms are being put off. Staff members are exhausted and 62 are out sick with COVID. "We had to discontinue elective surgeries so that we could turn our recovery room into an ICU," said Sutton. "Where do we go next?" Dr. Phyllis Mason, chief medical officer at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center, said the hospital has no capacity, with patients waiting up to four days for admission. "This is now not just about the COVID patient," said Mason. "This is about you, the general public. We cannot provide quality care for you." Dr. Mark Kline, physician-in-chief at Children's Hospital New Orleans, said their COVID patient count has gone as high as 20 on some days, far more than previous surge highs of 7. Half are "perfectly healthy" children, he said. "I am as worried about our children today as I have ever been," said Kline. "This virus, the delta variant of COVID, is every infectious disease specialist's and epidemiologist's worst nightmare." And while vaccinations are increasing, that layer of protection will not come soon enough to stop the ongoing rampage. "The vaccinations will do us good in a month and a half," said Hassig. "They're not going to do us good right now. What will do us good is masking and distancing. People need to make better choices."

One-third of the state's nine health regions have recently broken previous records for hospitalizations. In Region 2, which include Baton Rouge and surrounding areas, 355 people were hospitalized yesterday. The prior record was 345 on April 13, 2020. Region 3, which includes the River Parishes, Houma and Thibodaux saw 147 hospitalized yesterday. The prior record was 132 on April 11, 2020. Region 9, including St. Tammany, Livingston, Washington, Tangipahoa and St. Helena parishes, had 318 hospitalized Sunday, up from 263 Thursday. The prior record was Jan. 12 at 262. Louisiana currently leads the nation in cases per capita, with 89 per 100,000 compared to the national average of 24 per 100,000.

A good friend of my sister who we've known since we were kids contacted Covid recently, had since been hospitalized, and now put on a ventilator today in the ICU.
She's fully vaccinated, yet kidney problems caused a compromised immune system...not looking too good for her unfortunately, but hope for the best.

Sad and hits close to home being such a long time friend of my sister - other than daspy, the only person I know who has contacted the virus.

Wishing the best Hairball. I knew something was up when you mentioned farting around with Lucky Dips.

Thanks shattered. Just found out today from my sister, and evidently everything had quickly spiraled downward in the last week or so.

As for not having time farting around looking for Lucky Dips when they went on sale the other day, that was due to a far less important issue, but it did keep me preoccupied.

New York City will require proof of vaccination for indoor dining and fitness.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday morning that New York City will require proof of vaccination for people participating in indoor activities, including at restaurants, gyms and performances, his latest attempt to spur more vaccinations. The mandate also applies to workers at those places.

The policy is similar to mandates issued in France and Italy last month and is believed to be the first of its kind in the United States.

The program will start later this month, and after a transition period enforcement will begin in mid-September, when schools are expected to reopen and more workers could return to offices in Manhattan.

Mr. de Blasio has been moving aggressively to get more New Yorkers vaccinated to curtail a third wave of coronavirus cases. He is requiring city workers to get vaccinated or to face weekly testing, and he has offered a $100 incentive for the public.
