Hmmm...perhaps someone should enquire as to who is supplying vaccines to the UAE and any other countries that do so, and other countries should lobby to reduce their supply.

I believe the first purchases were made before vaccines were even submitted for approval, so was a bit of a hedged bet that paid off as a good start. Glad we secured enough for 2nd doses.
Very controversial, with the U.K. having just left the E.U.
Cuba have been lacking a lot, including drugs, due the long time embargo, so they have been working hard educating doctors, surgery methods and so on, also education in general, better than the western mass production of 30+ kids in classes.
So no surprise they do their own vaccines, they are out in the dark, on their own. From the Reuters report:

With Pfizer it was an option to buy assuming approval. In this case there was no money upfront. I think Moderna was pre-funded but still the option to buy should have been made as we were led to believe. There should have been options to buy for 300 million Americans rather than 150 or 200 million.

Bjornulf - I’m embarrassed to say that there are Canadian ‘Snowbirds’ (winter visitors) in Florida who not only have travelled there this year per usual, but who have sought out vaccines while there. Shameful.

Today at 6:30pm a short notice press conference announing:
Norway closing the borders for the first time since the March 12 lockdown.
Even if Norway have got some of the lowest corona virus case numbers vs population in Europe, and reproduction rate down to R=0.6 at present, the borders will be closes as of Friday morning, in order to avoid any more mutants coming in from abroad.
A total of 15 counties, including capital city Oslo, closed down last Saturday, and on Monday ten more counties, including where I live, closed down as well. A total of 25 counties with nearly one third of Norway's population is now closed this week, in order to terminate the virus mutants coming from UK, as well as other places. All shopping centers and malls are closed, except food stores, pharmacies and liquor stores. Yes, we do need our wines and drinks in these days, where restaurants have a complete alcohol ban since November. Schools and kindergardens are still open. Adults are adviced to work from home if possible.

Got my first vaccine today. The Moderna version. Stood in line for two hours in the cold. Luckily it didn't rain. It's supposed to tomorrow. I'm scheduled for the second dose in four weeks. I'm very relieved to get it. With so many a-holes not wearing masks, or not covering their nose, it's always stressful to go out for groceries and such. Hopefully we can get more of the vaccine out and begin to climb out of this depressing, worldwide mess.

The UK variant of the corona virus is now running more and more countries in Europe into the first major lockdown since March last year. UK, Denmark, Ireland and Denmark have had explosive numbers with the UK variant going dominant since Nov/Dec last year. Other countries try to avoid it, knowing it might be almost doble trouble. Most countries does not sequence the virus samples, so they don't really know about mutants in details, that is a major problem.
The UK variant is a lot more infectious. A story made available in Norway today is telling how hard it is to avoid this new variant.
Gunnar age 73 lives in Ski, a small place part of the county Nordre Follo, where we do currently have an uncontrolled situation in Norway due to the UK variant. He visited a friend at a nursing home in a nearby nursing home in Langhus on New Years Eve. Wearing a mask at all times, never touching any doors (they were all automatic), or other items, he was sitting on a stool at the end of the bed, 1.5 m i.e. 5 feet away from his friend, visit for some 50 minutes max. Two days later, he got covid-19, and two days after that, his wife age 76 got covid-19. Then they tested his friend at the nursing home, he had covid-19.
So a mask indoor - in company of a person having covid-19 - is not a safe protection. You need 2 meter (6ft), or more, and you need to be outside, not indoor. May be it is aerosols, may be it is not 100% fit mask/face. Still, the way most people wear masks, and the way people meet and hang around indoor, no wonder this new variant is running many countries into a new wave now.

I was an early proponent of masks here, and in real life, back when the virus started and the general consensus was mask wearing was not something the US could adapt to quickly, and that it would take away masks from health professionals etc who needed them more, which was generally true at the time.
Now, consensus is leaning towards wearing two masks, particularly in high risk areas. One an N-95 style mask covered with a cloth one seems prudent.
It's a shame, at least here in the US, N-95 type masks are still difficult to find and purchase.
Admittedly I haven't tried lately as I have consistently double masked when in higher risk environments.

British scientists estimate it could be as much as 70 percent more transmissible.
“The existence of more-transmissible viruses emphasizes the importance of us upping our game and doing not more of the same but better of the same,” said Tom Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Frieden has called for people to wear higher-quality masks. “Yes, that is confusing to people, but the key is to share what we know when we know it and be frank about what we don’t know.”

Just as important as the vaccine- I think most people, including me, are not sure of where to purchase extra protective masks The variant virus is very disturbing.

I've been using Sonovia antiviral masks for months now, though there are also other companies making them. These ones claim to have high filtration and to neutralize coronavirus to over 90%. I obviously can't vouch for the claims, but either way they are for sure better quality and value than disposables and no doubt better than home-made, which France has now banned in certain settings.

The most important weapon against this virus is to simply stay away from other people.Of course it is not always possible in all situations but some people are still socialising and having unnecessary contact when they really should be exercising much more caution.
In the last few days I have learnt of the death of two people I knew one of whom contracted the virus whilst in hospital for an unrelated surgery.

I believe the first purchases were made before vaccines were even submitted for approval, so was a bit of a hedged bet that paid off as a good start. Glad we secured enough for 2nd doses.
With Pfizer it was an option to buy assuming approval. In this case there was no money upfront. I think Moderna was pre-funded but still the option to buy should have been made as we were led to believe. There should have been options to buy for 300 million Americans rather than 150 or 200 million.
