Italy had just 233 deaths on March 7. If Las Vegas have "only 262 deaths" now, then everything is fine, like it was two months ago in Italy. May be there are no elderly people in Las Vegas, no nursing homes, and everybody is healthy, fit and ready for party time with corona. Or may be some still does not get it.

My wife and I have absolutely no plans to go there any time soon that's for damn sure. A shame as it was a quick getaway from reality, and an easy five hour scenic drive from home for us.
Some of the precautions mentioned in those articles will be relevant when traveling anywhere though (hotel room sanitization, etc.), not to mention the impact on large concerts, sporting events, etc, etc., etc.
Strange days are here, and will be here for quite some time. Hard to imagine anything ever being the way it was before, even when there is a vaccine...

This is a good video showing what's happening currently around Vegas.
The plexiglass at the tables and in between slots will be in place at some casinos. It will be interesting to see the measures they go to.
Again, hope they find a way to accurately track the rate of transmission asa they go.
video: [www.washingtonpost.com]

A bit scary and sad at the same time...as the restaurant owner Elizabeth Blau mentions"...to see the Strip is really, truly a Ghost Town..." (cue up the new Stones tune)!
Vegas has an uphill battle and it's work cut out in so many ways to try and get back to even a semblance of normalcy, and not just as a major tourist destination.

Those prototype acrylic dividers look nice, but really don't mean anything when the casinos are filled with hundreds of people - not sure if they'll even be approved unless there's other major precautionary measures involved such as limiting the number of people inside and scanning/screening everyone before they can enter. I watched the remake of The Fly last night w/Jeff Goldblum (forgot how creepy that movie was!) and maybe the casinos could come up with some type of acyrlic pod to encase each slot machine and individual gambler... farfetched I know haha, but probably the only way I'd feel safe. Whatever happens, neither my wife and I are big gamblers at all and spent very little time in the casinos themselves, so that's not what we'll miss. There's so much more that Vegas has to offer such as concerts, shows, etc., not to mention the many scenic outdoor areas all around the area to go hiking such as Valley of Fire State Park, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, etc., etc., etc.

As for the low number of deaths in Nevada mentioned on previous page, that number can mainly be attributed to the closure of Vegas and everything it has to offer. Had they remained open up to travelers coming in from everywhere around the world, the number would have been WAY higher, and once they do decide to open, seems no matter how many precautions put in place the numbers will likely escalate at a much faster/higher rate.

Meanwhile, we're content staying safe and at home in the beautiful city we live in, and other than going to the beach, my studio, the farmers markets, supermarkets, etc., no need to go anywhere else for now. We don't plan to go anywhere outside of our area any time soon, and not sure when that time will come, but we're in no rush as it's better to be safe than sorry. Will miss the Stones this coming Friday, but oh well...sh*t happens as they say, and life goes on..............

The virus will not ebb out. We get a break now, but history is telling that pandemics come in waves. The next waves might hit harder.

The 1918 pandemic (a.k.a. the Spanish flu) should be understood by every single leader in the world. I bet it is one of the first topics in basic virology classes.

1918 Influenza: the Mother of All Pandemics (CDC USA)

The Deadliest Flu: The Complete Story of the Discovery and Reconstruction of the 1918 Pandemic Virus (CDC USA)

In the 1918–1919 pandemic, a first or spring wave began in March 1918 and spread unevenly through the United States, Europe, and possibly Asia over the next 6 months. Illness rates were high, but death rates in most locales were not appreciably above normal.

A second or fall wave spread globally from September to November 1918 and was highly fatal. In many nations, a third wave occurred in early 1919.

In retrospect, even the rapid progressions from uncomplicated influenza infections to fatal pneumonia, a hallmark of the 1918–1919 fall and winter waves, had been noted in the relatively few severe spring wave cases. The differences between the waves thus seemed to be primarily in the much higher frequency of complicated, severe, and fatal cases in the last 2 waves.

It is safe to assume that round 2 is coming in the fall. But I think it is also safe to assume round 2 will not be nearly as bad as the first round was this time. This is not 1918 or whenever This is 2020. We are far more advanced and will be and are far more prepared than we were when this virus started.

Time to get back to life and quit looking at everything to be the worst case.

Unfortunately, as advanced as a species we are, we're pathetic. Liberty has overruled living. The virus doesn't care about heat. Don't be surprised if a repeat of the Spanish Flu pandemic occurs - unlike that deadly Chinese H1N1 virus, this one is extremely different.

Won't happen. Sure there will be round 2 in the Fall but it will be far less wide spread as round one.

We got this!

Time to quit preaching the doom and gloom.

Get back to living.

Have it. Wave your liberty flag, just don't ask for help if you get the virus.

OK

It comes through, it gets into the nursing homes, it finds the sick and vulnerable. And then it seems to quiet down. It will be interesting to see if it spikes.
The pattern seems to be the same everywhere.
California is one outlier. It has 57 deaths per million people, which is less even than Germany and way lower than the UK, France, Italy and Spain. Maybe it's the lack of public transport, the early restrictions on travel, the generally horizontal mode of living.
California and Germany have some things in common in that many governmental things are done at the local or regional level and their bureaucracy is very skilled.
My state, Michigan, is poorly governed, especially Detroit, which has many unhealthy people and poor government.
The virus is exposing our weaknesses.
My concern is that we get the schools and universities going in the fall. It can be very damaging to young people to lose a year.

Is Las Vegas really opening up? How are people supposed to get there? Driving their own cars? Or going through airports and airplanes?

Are really people willing to expose themselves to the virus these days? Just for entertainment? I mean you have to go to the grocery store for food, and you have to go to work, and you have to visit your parents and your friends, but you don't have to sit in with a slot machine in Las Vegas.

I guess a lot of people who go to Vegas like to gamble..........confused smiley

I know people like to gamble, but do you like to gamble when you know there are an unknown number of snipers in town?

There is a difference in gambling with money vs your health...

I was just joking - a play on words - a pun I guess............Pun: a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word (gamble with money, gamble with health)........(the 'confused smiley' was aimed at the 'health gamblers' not your statement........

The Trump administration projects about 3,000 daily deaths by early June

"As President Trump presses for states to reopen their economies, his administration is privately projecting a steady rise in the number of cases and deaths from the coronavirus over the next several weeks, reaching about 3,000 daily deaths on June 1, according to an internal document obtained by The New York Times, nearly double from the current level of about 1,750.

The projections, based on government modeling pulled together in chart form by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, forecast about 200,000 new cases each day by the end of the month, up from about 25,000 cases now.

The numbers underscore a sobering reality: While the United States has been hunkered down for the past seven weeks, significant risks remain. And the reopening to the economy will make matters worse."

When you read the article, Trump said on Fox last night that they might now see 100,000 deaths in the US. Today the US will hit 70,000 deaths. They will hit 100,000 in only a few more weeks. At current rates, it is very possible that they'll hit 200,000 by July 4 weekend, yet many states are planning on limited reopenings.

Seems to me there is a huge difference between states in the USA. Some are hit hard, some hardly at all. I heard a figure being thrown around on CNN (Wolf Blitzer) the other day;
800,000 was the estimation before this is over. Here in Sweden the same figure would be 8,000-20,000. The R rate is below 1 here now though. Which indicates a relief of sorts.

Coronavirus: Gov. Newsom announces second phase of reopening parts of California to start as early as Friday

Cali

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KABC) -- Gov. Gavin Newsom said he will announce on Thursday plans for California to move closer to reopening parts of the state in a "very positive sign" prompted by data on the coronavirus outbreak. The governor said during his daily press conference Monday that the next stage of reopening the state's economy is expected to begin as early as Friday. Some businesses included in Newsom's "Stage 2" of reopening will allow for curbside pick-up at businesses such as book stores, clothing stores, sporting goods, toy stores and florists, given they follow additional safety protocols that will be released Thursday, Newsom said. The state is also working to create guidelines that will allow restaurants and other hospitality businesses to open their doors again. However, Newsom said the next phase does not currently include the reopening of offices, seated dining in restaurants or shopping at malls.

The governor said a key consideration for entering phase two is the ability for health authorities to test and conduct contact tracing of infections. "This is a very positive sign and it has happened for only one reason: the data says it can happen," Newsom said. "But we recognize as we begin to modify ... possible community spread will occur. If that is the case, and we don't have the capacity to control that spread, to track that spread, to isolate individuals that may have been in contact with COVID-19, we will have to make modifications anew." The state plans to reopen parts of the state in four stages, as described by Department of Public Health Director Dr. Sonia Angell:

Stage 1: Everyone is either staying at home or a member of the essential workforce. This is the stage we are in now, and will stay in until a modification to the statewide stay-at-home order.

Stage 2: Reopening lower risk workplaces, including:
Non-essential manufacturing (toys, furniture, clothing, etc.)
Schools
Childcare facilities
Retail businesses for curbside pick-up
Offices where working remotely isn't possible, but can be modified to make the environment safer for employees

Stage 3: Reopening higher risk workplaces, which require close proximity to other people, including:
Hair salons
Nail salons
Gyms
Movie theaters
Sporting events without live audiences
In-person religious services (churches and weddings)

Stage 4: Ending the stay-at-home order, which would allow for the reopening of:
Concert venues
Convention centers
Sporting events with live audiences

However, Newsom emphasized that not all areas of the state will be forced to strictly adhere with the state's guidelines for moving into Stage 2. Local officials still have the authority to accelerate or slow down reopening at the county level, Newsom said. "We are not telling locals that believe it's too soon, too fast to modify. We believe those local communities that have separate timelines should be afforded the capacity to advance those timelines," he said. "If they choose not to come into compliance with the state guidelines, they have that right."More rural or remote counties with fewer COVID-19 cases will also be allowed to reopen businesses sooner, the governor said, as long as their decisions don't risk the "the health of the entire state."

On May 1, the governor hinted that restrictions may be lifted sooner than previously indicated. "We're getting very close to making very meaningful augmentations to that stay-at-home order. We said 'weeks, not months' about four or five days ago. I want to say 'many days, not weeks,'" Newsom said. "As long as we continue to be prudent and thoughtful in certain modifications, I think we'll be making some announcements."

Things in Seattle have been bad but could've been much worse. Our governor took early & decisive action that probably saved many lives. There is 4 step plan to reopen the state but it is very gradual. If all goes well, it should be done by early July but there are specific criteria before taking next step with at least 3 weeks between each phase. The stay at home order stays in effect until at least June 1.

There was yet another massive protest at a state capital today, this time in Massachusetts. I didn't see any swastikas at this one, but I didn't really care to look at many pictures.

This is a bizarre circumstance where we have to hope and pray that the least intelligent members of society (the protesters) are right, and the most intelligent members of society (the scientists and doctors) are wrong.

Otherwise, a lot of people are going to die, and not just nursing home patients.

UW model predicts thousands more COVID-19 deaths nationwide as restrictions ease

In an update posted Monday, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), an independent health research center at the University of Washington, wrote, “We, collectively, are now entering a new phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our updated modeling approach indicates that the US appears to be in a prolonged epidemic peak, averaging near or over 2,000 predicted COVID-19 deaths a day for the last few weeks.”

As a result, building on its projections in recent weeks, the institute now estimates a “projected 134,475 cumulative COVID-19 deaths (estimate range of 95,092 to 242,890) could occur in the US through August.”

The projections are an increase of 62,042 from its April 29 projections..

According to IHME: “These projections are considerably higher than previous estimates, representing the combined effects of death model updates and formally incorporating the effect of changes in mobility and social distancing policies into transmission dynamics.”

“More locations are easing previously implemented social distancing policies, and human mobility patterns are trending upward — even in places where distancing measures remain in place,” the institute noted."

Missed this report from Newsweek published yesterday evening:

China 'Intentionally Concealed Severity' of Coronavirus Outbreak to Hoard Masks, Other Supplies, DHS Report Says
By Christina Zhao On 5/3/20 at 6:34 PM EDT

China

United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials accused China of hiding the severity of the coronavirus outbreak in the early stages to hoard medical supplies in a new four-page intelligence report.

The report, dated May 1 and obtained by The Associated Press, said Chinese officials "intentionally concealed the severity" of COVID-19 in early January so they could organize sufficient shipments of medical supplies to help their citizens respond effectively to the pandemic. The document revealed that Beijing increased imports and decreased exports of medical supplies during a period in January when they were also downplaying the severity of the novel disease. The analysis was deemed "for official use only" but was not classified.

The DHS report also accused Chinese leaders of failing to notify the World Health Organization (WHO) of the virus' contagion status throughout most of January. They did so to allow time for the increased order of medical supplies such as face masks and surgical gowns to arrive from overseas, the analysis alleged. According to the document, it was highly probable—95 percent—that Beijing's increases in medical imports and decreases in medical exports did not sit within the normal range.

Beijing imported 2.5 billion pieces of epidemic personal protective equipment (PPE)—which included more than two billion masks—during a six-week period starting mid-January, according to Chinese government data. The orders came after Chinese consulates worldwide urgently called for safety supplies to battle the coronavirus outbreak. When the pandemic began severely threatening the rest of the world weeks later, countries that had shipped PPE to China were left scrambling to gather enough supplies for their own fight with the novel disease.

Newsweek reached out to China's embassy in Washington D.C. for comment. This story will be updated with any response.

The DHS analysis comes as President Donald Trump and U.S. officials have intensified their criticisms of China's handling of the coronavirus outbreak, which was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei in December 2019. The Trump administration believes Beijing's response was slow and inadequate, particularly in the early stages before it then spread around the world, killing 248,000 globally as of Sunday.

Trump on Thursday said he's seen evidence that gives him a high degree of confidence that the coronavirus originated from a lab in Wuhan. His assertion came hours after domestic intelligence officials confirmed they were exploring the possibility that the novel disease accidentally leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, confirming Newsweek's previous reporting on the matter.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo echoed the president's remarks on Sunday morning, telling ABC News that there's "enormous evidence" that COVID-19 originated from a lab. He also said evidence supports their allegation that the Chinese government went to great lengths to purposefully cover up the virus' severity.

"China has a history of infecting the world," Pompeo said, as well as maintaining "substandard" laboratories.

"We can confirm that the Chinese Communist Party did all that it could to make sure that the world didn't learn in a timely fashion about what was taking place," the secretary of state added. "We've seen the fact that they kicked the journalists out. We saw the fact that those who were trying to report on this, medical professionals inside of China, were silenced. They shut down reporting."

In another bit of news, ZZ Top pushed forward their rescheduled Vegas shows at the Venetian Theater again from this coming August all the way out to next April 2021.
With the theater having a capacity of only 1,800, seems like a sign that Vegas will be nowhere ready to host even small concerts any time in the foreseeable future. Glad I was able to get a refund.

I am not sure if it started at a wet market or was a mishap at the lab really matters. What matters is they we’re well aware that they had a huge problem with this virus. And instead of letting the world know just how bad it was. They instead tried to hide it all the time stocking up on PPE and reducing what they were exporting of mask etc by 48%.

Who cares how it happened.

Hold them accountable.

They know what they did

Every other county in this world should come together and call them out and stop this from ever happening again and make them some how pay for this time

Two things, shortly, about China:

1) China is a propaganda state. A dictatorship. If you attack China they won't turn the other cheek. They will attack you. They won't admit to anything.

2) POTUS is pressured. He wants a scapegoat to turn the tide (sorry one image too much). Hence pointing out China. It's tactics. He's good with that. His focus is on winning the election.

His focus is holding China accountable. Just like many other countries are. Trump just says what he thinks and will not apologize for exposing the truth or bow down to a dictatorship

He just puts it out there. And there may be many things about him or what he does that you may not agree with or like but on this topic. He is spot on
