I haven't had a hair cut of what is left in over a month. Hair growing on back of neck - I call the barber shop and no one answers. the most transmittable point of contact is is Self Service Gas Pump handles - not Barber Shops or retail stores.

I've worn a buzzcut that I have cut myself for literally decades.
For some crazy reason I decided now would be a good time to grow it and a beard out. Kind of a badge of the isolation, I guess.

That said, I won't be getting it trimmed anytime soon.
A cut in a barber shop is something that would make my personal high risk list, above retail shopping, which I also rank high.

Keeping disposable gloves in the car works really well at the pumps, which thanks to Living In A Ghost Town, is a rare occurrence.

I've always considered my barber as a friend. One aspect of getting your hair cut at the shop is the interaction with other patrons at the shop- Now they charge
$ 14 however I just hand a 20 - now how my barber reports earnings is his decision.

Unfortunately , here in Martin County nothing is open -too close to Miami West Palm hot spots

Speaking of bleach:

The leader of the most prominent group in the US peddling potentially lethal industrial bleach as a “miracle cure” for coronavirus wrote to Donald Trump at the White House this week.

In his letter, Mark Grenon told Trump that chlorine dioxide – a powerful bleach used in industrial processes such as textile manufacturing that can have fatal side-effects when drunk – is “a wonderful detox that can kill 99% of the pathogens in the body”. He added that it “can rid the body of Covid-19”.

If one is going to consume bleach -the LD 50 value must be known not to overdose. This is a not a good remedy. After hearing all the crap from various doctors and experts - Let's go with mass producing advanced Tech TEST KITS for all!

So Texas and Vermont will partially reopen Monday. I forsee a large jump in cases, perhaps not so much in Vermont since it has a small population. Large cities like Houston and Dallas might turn into New Orleans with the number infected.
I take screen shots on my cell phone from the Fox News website which shows current world and US cases. On Friday morning the US had 672246 cases and 33288 deaths. Today, it stood at 755533 cases and 41379 deaths. 8091 reported deaths in 2 days. At this rate, they'll hit 60000 by next weekend if they don't flatten the curve. Who knows where it'll be the weekend after that.

Just to update my numbers from Sunday afternoon, things seemed to have slowed a bit down in the US. Current US figures are 852703 cases and 47750 deaths so 97152 new cases and 6371 deaths or a little over 2000 per day. At this rate, they'll hit mid 50's by Saturday.

Another update for tonight, US figures are now at 956000 cases and 54000 deaths so 103000 new cases and 6250 deaths so still a little over 2000 per day. The curve isn't flattening but not increasing either. US will hit a million cases by Monday and hit 60000 deaths by Tuesday at the current rate. A couple weeks from now we'll see if there's a spike due to certain states partially reopening.

It's interesting to look at the JHU site [www.arcgis.com] and then on the left in the list of Nations to select Sweden and then look at the bottom right hand corner and select daily cases.

The peaks and troughs are all about 7 days apart, which makes me wonder if they are as a result of the looser social distancing rules wreaking their havoc after weekends socialising?

Good observation Captain Corella! One question to everyone, in Canada, there have been a lot of cases and deaths in long term care homes, so elderly with compromised health. Is this similar to other countries?

In the UK the published number (20,381 at this writing) is now carefully described as 'deaths in hospital'. There are estimates that as many as 20,000 deaths in the community and/or in care homes are uncounted. There were postings about that by BV in this thread a few days ago. [www.ft.com]

Here in Australia we're, like New Zealand (who really are not getting the huge credit that they deserve), we have so far dodged a bullet, the majority of deaths by far are in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Of the 80 deaths at this writing, only 11 are not 70 or over [www.covid19data.com.au]. Looking at the list (scroll down at the link given) you can see than many there are shown as being from care homes or cruise ships.

I watch the Sweden press conferences every day. They have their own way of reporting. Every day they add numbers not just for the day before, but also 2-6 days before that, sort of data coming in late. Johns Hopkins and worldometer probablly add all these numbers to one day - yesterday.

Here is an article from the Seattle Times about the repercussions the virus is having in the rest of the US medical system. I have been dealing with similar situation at my rheumatologist's practice. I started a new chemo type drug this week that has to be done via IV & it took a real long time to get insurance approval. My doctor is basically only doing video appointments unless absolutely necessary. My situation requires constant monitoring, so it is tricky doing things like blood tests. Basically, the health care system in the US is in shambles.

Barber shops and hair-dressers can easily be open w/ some very basic rules....masks required for all, no more than 1 person inside at a time, barber must change gloves after each cut (or use sanitizer)....wipe down chair w/ disinfectant after each customer.....

and, as MisterDDD's comment points out: people will self-regulate...if people don't feel safe going to the barber, they won't go....

but the gov't disallowing ALL customers and thus forcing the barber into unemployment is absurd....and that's what's happening.

I'm sorry...but, if people can go to the liquor store, they should be able to go the barber....or the weed store for that matter.

and if 50,000 people can descend on SoCal Beaches, in one day....then why can't people can go to the barber one at a time w/ a mask on?

I simply don't get it.

People need to work. The economy needs to start to recover. Where are we planning on getting all the money to fund on-going and growing unemployment moving forward? Just go out to the money tree and cut a few leaves?

I know many disagree and that's fine...but, I simply feel that with some basic regulations we can and should (and need to) start to open things.

For the record, I have little hair and shave it off myself.

"...social distancing measures that have upended American life will be a constant fixture through the summer".

I'm quite used to it now which could be a sign I've always been a bit antisocial (lol), but in all honesty I can't wait until this is all over...
I have a suspicious feeling though that this could go on well beyond the summer ...at least in cities and states that don't prematurely reopen...

Dr. Birx: U.S. needs a 'breakthrough' on antigen testing to aid in re-opening
The White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator told "Meet the Press" there are encouraging signs but re-openings will be slow.

As the article says: "Lifeguards and law enforcement are present at the beaches to make sure people are keeping their distance.
Lifeguards in Huntington and Newport told CBS Los Angeles that most people have maintained their distance and are spread out along the sand".

Maybe if there were lifeguards and law enforcement present inside barbershops they would also be able to open? Just kidding of course, but being outside in the fresh air on a wide open beach seems a bit safer than being stuck inside of a barbershop no matter what pre-cautions are taken. That said, those beaches down in Orange County (which is south of Los Angeles County and over 100 miles south from where I live), look very crowded and I wouldn't want to go anywhere near there. The beaches up where I live are quite different though w/LOTS of open space and a very small number of people.*(many local "secret spot" beaches are completely empty smiling smiley )

Here's another story on the overcrowded Orange County/Huntington Beach scene down south:
Corona/Beach

We'll see how this all pans out in a couple of weeks I guess (along with the crowded beaches in Florida last week)- if there's a massive spike in coronavirus down there, it shouldn't come as a surprise.
On the other hand, if there's NO spike in illnesses, maybe that's a good sign for other beaches and other wide open areas around the country?

Nice - they should install several of those down in Huntington Beach in Orange County, and all other overcrowded beaches around the world.
As far as I know, Los Angeles County beaches are still off limits which might account for the overcrowdedness down in Orange County with everyone from L.A. heading south.
And also San Diego beaches south of Orange County might still be off limits, so those people would head up to north - that area is sort of absorbing everyone from the north and the south.
Where I live north of L.A. County, we have the benefit of an enormous mountain range that separates us from L.A. and all things south, and thankfully it's not as easily accessible to the masses...so close but yet so far...

A 100-year-old WWII veteran dies of the coronavirus a century after the flu pandemic killed his twin

"Before Philip Kahn died of coronavirus on April 17 at 100 years old, he kept thinking about his twin brother, Samuel.
When he told his life story to his grandchildren, friends and neighbors, it always began with Samuel, and now it seemed to be ending that way, too.
The twins were born into a world still torn by the flu pandemic in December 1919, in New York. Samuel died of influenza just weeks later. Philip survived."

This alarm from Tyson's chairman is concerning.
Thought the scramble for toilet paper was bad, a shortage of meat would make that look tame. They had been limiting all chicken products to one item here in most NW stores early in the lockdown.
May see more of that and then some.

'The food supply chain is breaking,' Tyson says as plants close

New York (CNN Business)Tyson Foods (TSN) is warning that "millions of pounds of meat" will disappear from the supply chain as the coronavirus pandemic pushes food processing plants to close, leading to product shortages in grocery stores across the country.

"The food supply chain is breaking," wrote board chairman John Tyson in a full-page advertisement published Sunday in The New York Times, Washington Post and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Some of the country's largest abattoirs (processing plants or slaughterhouses) have been forced to cease operations temporarily after thousands of employees across the country have tested positive for the virus.

Week-by-week corona virus fatality rates

The worldwide fatality rate peak was five weeks ago on March 29.

Italy (March 9) and Spain (March 14) lockdown have been successful in stopping the virus spread, and they are now at a much lower increase of fatalities.

Germany and UK are experiencing the same decline in the growth rate. Since the absolute accumulated numbers in UK have been four times higher than the numbers in Germany, it looks worse for UK. Still, UK are experiencing the very same decrease in the fatality rate week by week.

USA do have the fatality rate we have seen in Italy and Spain 2-3 weeks ago. If USA do continue the lockdown for 2-3 more weeks, they will see the same low fatality rates as seen in Italy and Spain now, by mid May.

Lockdown is working worldwide, as a measure of slowing the corona virus spread. Some countries are now opening up slowly. We will see how this affect the fatality rates in 2-4 weeks time.

Explanation:

m-08, m-15, m22, .. a-05 etc are the multiplication factor in the number of deaths week-by-week, as measured on the week ending with March-08, March-15, ..., April-19 etc.

Reference numbers:

WHO advices on how to slow down the virus:

1. Keep a physical distance of more than 2 m / 6 feet to people
2. Wash your hands properly and often
3. Limit the number of people you have contact with, max 2-5 people
