So why does both the fed and the separate states compete on buying ventilators from China?

There are political divisions and much mistrust between the states and the federal government. There are questions of rights and power, and they often end up in courts. Partisan politics are in play, and it's like this on many issues, not just the ventilator purchases.Very inefficient.

Looks like the Toronto mayor has just cancelled all public events in the city until June 30.

I appreciate your optimism, but don't share it, in this particular case.

We'll be grinding through this for some time I'm afraid.

Appreciate strong stances as he appears to be taking, and definitely fall into the "you can't be too cautious" camp.
That said, I think this one night be a mistake for a couple reasons. First, psychologically, all of us at least have some hope of life perhaps returning to whatever the new "normal" will be sooner rather than later.
Second, no one really knows for certain any date in the future when public gatherings will return, to project this far off could hamper an economic recovery.
No real need or point at this stage to go beyond a couple months projection, imo.

So either way understated number of cases, or way understated death rate, or some combination of the two.

It would be a smart move if Bill Gates was appointed Coronavirus Czar.
We need coordinated nationwide efforts and he'd be the ideal person to lead it.

Bill Gates: Here’s how to make up for lost time on covid-19
"There’s no question the United States missed the opportunity to get ahead of the novel coronavirus. But the window for making important decisions hasn’t closed. The choices we and our leaders make now will have an enormous impact on how soon case numbers start to go down, how long the economy remains shut down and how many Americans will have to bury a loved one because of covid-19.

Through my work with the Gates Foundation, I’ve spoken with experts and leaders in Washington and across the country. It’s become clear to me that we must take three steps.

First, we need a consistent nationwide approach to shutting down. Despite urging from public health experts, some states and counties haven’t shut down completely. In some states, beaches are still open; in others, restaurants still serve sit-down meals. This is a recipe for disaster. Because people can travel freely across state lines, so can the virus. The country’s leaders need to be clear: Shutdown anywhere means shutdown everywhere"

I have no reason to believe the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation is not credible.

Bill Gates wouldn't work for someone who won't listen to him. Saw an interview and he called this pandemic. He is more useful where he is now. Maybe in another administration he would be interested. Smart guy.

I'm sure a lot of us by now know someone with it. My mother in law has just been released from the hospital after 5 days there. She has the virus, but the fever has gone down and she never got the respiratory problems. Hopefully she's getting over it.

Not far from me in Brooklyn, NY, they were loading lots of people in body bags into a refrigerated container truck. I thought of the movie Soylent Green from 1970.

Some interesting thoughts from Nick Cave regarding what he's doing during the unexpected time off. This is from the Red Hand Files where Nick personally answers questions from fans on a wide range of subjects. It comes out roughly weekly & is quite fascinating. I highly recommend it if you have any interest.

So weird how symptoms vary. In the UK today we had a report of someone who only had the loss of taste symptom - nothing else. Must say those of you still talking about a couple of weeks and all will be well are going to be sadly disappointed. We have just heard Edinburgh Festival cancelled today (Aug/Sept)

In Canada, I think the federal and provincial governments have done a decent job. Not sure about other countries right now, but in BC we get daily updates from the federal and provincial governments. Everyone is supposed to stay home unless absolutely necessary. In Canada as of today, there have been officially 9005 people who have contracted the virus, 105 have passed and 1253 have recovered. In BC, 1000 have contracted the virus and 24 have passed. On a positive note, 507 have recovered so some good news! Hopefully everyone follows the government orders and stays home and maintains the 2 meter distance when they're out, and wash your hands a lot!
