Don't come to France!

"Funny" (in quotes!) you say that. While meetings and conferences are being cancelled all around I just received a reminder from the organizers of a conference to take place in Paris a few weeks from now telling me I'm late with my registration ...

It's a Nigerian scam! grinning smiley

Well...I have tickets for my wife and I to see ZZ Top again in Vegas next Saturday at the Venetian Theater (I was going to surprise her once we arrived there), and have been having some mild apprehension about the thought of attending.
The last couple of days I've actually been hoping they would cancel, and sure enough just found out the entire five night residency has been canceled. No biggie as we've seen ZZ Top many times, though will miss out on third row in a small theater.
Now wondering if we should go to Vegas at all...was just there on New Years and don't see much of a reason now to go back so soon. Free/comped rooms make it easy to cancel, and a six hour drive through the desert doesn't sound like much fun with the destination being a breeding ground of disease (crowded casinos, etc.), but with a few hundred extra dollars refunded from the ZZ Top tix might want to do a bit of gambling ha...make some lemonade out of lemons....or just play it safe and stay home.

Already resigned to the fact the Stones shows will be canceled, and there are a few more concerts I have tix for that are more than likely to be canceled as well.
None of them mean much at all though when compared to the seriousness of this global problem, and the impact it's having on so many people ...it's all a bit eery....like a Twilight Zone episode...stay safe everyone!

Politicians from every country are lost like a tear in the ocean.
They follow the advices of virus specialists when it's already too late to act.

What happened in China will happen in every country more or less, don't believe any medias when they try to tell you that everything is ok for now.
That's what they did, here in France during weeks, and since yesterday, it look like a state of war...

I'm waiting to receive notice that the ZZ Top concert on May 1 in Abbotsford BC, just outside Vancouver, is postponed or cancelled. BC has a ban on gatherings of over 250 people. Just got notification today that the Alice Cooper concert at the same venue for April has been postponed til fall. Have tickets for four concerts within a 3 week span, Alice, ZZ Top, Stones and Journey but all are/will be postponed/cancelled.

GTA researchers make COVID-19 breakthrough, isolate the virus

Kevin McGran

By Kevin McGran Sports Reporter
Thu., March 12, 2020timer1 min. read

Researchers from Sunnybrook, the University of Toronto and McMaster University in Hamilton have made a key breakthrough in the battle against COVID-19, the deadly virus that is causing a worldwide pandemic.

The team has isolated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (known clinically as SARS-CoV-2), the agent responsible for the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19, the hospital said Thursday night on its website.

The isolated virus will help researchers in Canada and across the world develop better diagnostic testing, treatments and vaccines, and gain a better understanding of the biology and evolution of the virus, the hospital said.

“We need key tools to develop solutions to this pandemic. While the immediate response is crucial, longer-term solutions come from essential research into this novel virus,” said Dr. Samira Mubareka, a microbiologist and infectious diseases physician at Sunnybrook.

The team — Dr. Samira Mubareka and Dr. Rob Kozak of Sunnybrook and University of Toronto; Dr. Arinjay Banerjee and Dr. Karen Mossman of McMaster University — was able to culture the virus from two clinical specimens in a Level 3 containment facility.

“Researchers from these world-class institutions came together in a grassroots way to successfully isolate the virus in just a few short weeks,” said Kozak, a clinical microbiologist at Sunnybrook. “It demonstrates the amazing things that can happen when we collaborate.”

Banerjee, a post-doctoral fellow at McMaster University, said collaboration is the key.

“Now that we have isolated the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we can share this with other researchers and continue this teamwork,” he said. “The more viruses that are made available in this way, the more we can learn, collaborate and share

Nate

The US President had a press conference today at 3:30pm local time Washington D.C. declared a national emergency for the entire US.

During the Q&A, he was asked why UK was allowed to travel into USA, while 7 or so other countries banned from travel to the US had lower numbers of cases vs UK, and UK numbers are now increasing. Then the president said may be they would look into the numbers and may be then UK would be added to the list of banned countries.

If UK is banned then the tour is off. Well the tour will be off anyway.

For anyone who has flights booked with BA they have today updated their rebooking and refund policy to include all bookings due to depart up until May 31st the previous policy was only for bookings made from March 3rd.
Most airlines are now being very flexible with regards to bookings and also some of the big hotel chains are now providing options to rebook or take a credit for future use even with non refundable bookings.

Yes I was pleased to hear your daughter’s test came back okay. It’s good
Washington state has closed schools for a long period. Washington state seems to be taking the crisis as a true emergency and I understand they are
considering some drastic options which other states have not yet implemented.

We live in Illinois and are waiting to hear if my daughter’s high school
will close beginning Monday. Hopefully it will.

Most domestic airlines here are definitely being flexible.

Of the five different airlines I have booked with for the tour, two still have policies that don't allow for the one time change fee waiver (purchased in Feb instead of March etc)
that many others are doing. Pretty sure that will change, but as of now.. still on the hook for San Diego and perhaps one way to Nashville.
Normally that wouldn't be a big deal, would go and enjoy. Things are changing quickly that is for sure.

Normally wouldn't argue about no 1 status over a virus, but being here in Washington I believe we've earned that "honor".
In all seriousness, I was unaware until now that NY had that many.

Latest CNN numbers has Washington as the number 1 state in both number of confirmed cases and deaths unfortunately.

I had been helping my goddaughter plan a Vegas trip for her & a few of her friends. I have a lot of knowledge about Vegas & they have never been. The group is in their 20s. They want to go in late May. I just convinced her that the wise course is to wait a bit before booking anything. Vegas has people from everywhere & say Trump locks down Seattle (conjecture), she wouldn't be able to get home. She's a smart girl & listened to me. I helped raise her & she has turned out well. We will revisit the topic in 3 weeks.

Minnesota has declared a “peacetime state of emergency”. However, schools are NOT going to close.
Our neighbor state, Wisconsin, has closed their schools.

Minnesota (pop 5+ million) now has 14 positives out of approximately 555 tested. The first positive was announced 7 days ago.

My daughter was going to be taking her first flights by herself to visit relatives in Illinois... Just cancelled that.

Yes, State and local officials are definitely stepping up in the efforts to get this user control. Hopefully all the measures will help.

You are right that we are going to need the refunded money from the tour to help our families. Luckily I can work from home, but my daughter is a server and bartender and the restaurants are virtually empty in SF and she is down to two days per week........ and of course it is San Francisco so ever normal person lives month to month and pays most of their salary for rent!

The experts have said people can have the virus and show no symptoms. So does this mean some of these people could test negative and still actually have the virus?

No, if you have the virus you generally test positive. Mayor of Miami is on CNN right now saying he tested positive...he showed no symptoms but had himself tested because he was in proximity with someone that was.

We're having breakthrough reports here for certainly two weeks or so now, (a) researcher(s) claiming their vaccines be already tested in China, etc., so I'm a bit hesitant to put more trust than necessary in such reports until there are credible results.
