I'm still buying concerts tickets which shows could be cancelled, today I'm getting a ticket to Herman's Hermits September show and if it does get cancelled I've still got a hard copy ticket and promo poster to frame

Ok uhm that's the spirit I guess? A poster from a show that never happened certainly could be worth something

May seem like a petty thing with of all that we're facing, but is it OK to go to the Gym? What I've read is that it's OK if you sanitize your hands after each time you use equipment and keep a safe distance form people, (Don't to go a work out class). Any opinions on this?

Thinking its probably better to do home/outdoor exercise.

The number of new casesreported on Wednesday in China fell to 26 out of a1.4 billion people. That is down from a park of 15200 on February 12.Apple has also reopened all its stores.Diesnt sound like a pandemic in China

Although it is a blessing in this case, China can revert to draconian measures to enforce quarantine, etc. For all intents & purposes they live under martial law under normal circumstances.

We don't know how much we can attribute to the draconian measures, and how much to the weather. December/January where the sharpest rise was observed are quite cold in Wuhaan, while in late February and March it is getting much warmer. Many viruses have limited transmission possibilites in warm weather. Just when it got warmer in China, the number of cases dropped. May be coincident. Or not.

Do NOT TRAVEL. STAY AT HOME. GET HOME IF YOU ARE ON TRAVEL.

This is the clear recommendation from several health authorities, as told on on CNN, by Canadian authorities, and as adviced in Norway and so on.

Why?

Because travel will bring your body from one local community into another. You increase the risk and you double the area of the virus.

If you go to your mountain cabin, to an island in the Caribbean, or to a holiday resort, you will first of all put yourself, and everyone else, at an extra risk, because you don't really know if you are, or if you will be, infected by the virus. Secondly, if you get the virus, where is the safest place to be? At a remote hospital with staff who may not have capacity or equipment for you? You would for sure like to be at home.

Anyone arriving into Norway after Feb 27 - from outside the Nordic countries - will have to stay into quarantine for 14 days from the day of arrival. No matter if you are sick or not. If you travel as a tourist, and you do not live in Norway, you will have to specify the location of where you will stay in quarantine for 14 days.

CANADA ACTIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS:

Don't leave Canada, cancel events with over 250 people: Ontario's top doc

Number of cases
As of 9am on 12 March 2020, 29,764 people have been tested in the UK, of which 29,174 were confirmed negative and 590 were confirmed as positive. Eight patients who tested positive for COVID-19 have died.

- This is for a population of 65million people. Keep your heads screwed on tight.
conservative estimate 10k infected in UK (chief medical officer). Point been made many times above, you can't measure what hasn't been tested yet

And now the UK only test people who are already hospitalised, not people with mild symptoms or potentially at early stages. They could be virus bombs out there.

55.000 people at Anfield two days ago. The Athletico-fans straight from a town where it's really spreading.

What is Boris doing exactly?

No country with more than a few cases is testing people with mild symptoms. There are not enough test kits, nor laboratory capacity, to check thousands every day.

The idea is to focus on the really ill people - its obvious who they are! Its not like there are drugs to inhibit or cure this virus, when early and wide diagnosis helps cure people.

Perfect data would be helpful to get a full picture, but the only "actual" numbers worth focusing on are how many need hospital treatment; how many need ICU; how many don't make it; and how much hospital and ICU capacity (medical staff and equipment) do we have locally.

The "big events" banning is of course close to all our hearts. The main reason to do it is to stop distracting emergency staff from helping people with this virus - not to reduce it spreading. And all those emergency staff (medics and police especially) will get this virus and be in very short supply.

No events reduces the demand on those fit to work. Same reason the Italians closed ski resorts.

It is absolutely NOT ok to go to the gym.

All activities like gym and other facilities were banned in Norway yesterday, same day the largest gym SATS closed down just hours before the ban.

STOCK EXCHANGE RELEASE CORONA by SATS

Your hands are in touch with a lot of equipment in the gym. Your sweat and hand fluids and body sweat and virus will move from one equipment to another, the gym is the perfect place for spreading diseases, just like the magazines in your doctor's office. Then you are close to many others, and you change next to others, you shower, gym is NOT the place to keep open now. All gyms should close as soon as possible, like we got a law for it yesterday in Norway.

But you will get a ridiculous load of infected people, and many of them will become ill with virus bombs gathering at events. At least you could quarantine people with mild symptoms. What about schools and kindergartens?

New York Times today:

Worst-Case Estimates for U.S. Coronavirus Deaths
Projections based on C.D.C. scenarios show a potentially vast toll. But those numbers don’t account for interventions now underway.

Officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and epidemic experts from universities around the world conferred last month about what might happen if the new coronavirus gained a foothold in the United States. How many people might die? How many would be infected and need hospitalization?

.....

Even severe flu seasons stress the nation’s hospitals to the point of setting up tents in parking lots and keeping people for days in emergency rooms. Coronavirus is likely to cause five to 10 times that burden of disease, said Dr. James Lawler, an infectious diseases specialist and public health expert at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Hospitals “need to start working now,” he said, “to get prepared to take care of a heck of a lot of people.”

.....

Dr. Lawler recently presented his own “best guess” projections to American hospital and health system executives at a private webinar convened by the American Hospital Association. He estimated that some 96 million people in the U.S. would be infected. Five out of every hundred would need hospitalization, which would mean close to five million hospital admissions, nearly two million of those patients requiring intensive care and about half of those needing the support of ventilators.

.....

Dr. Lawler’s calculations suggested 480,000 deaths, which he said was conservative. By contrast, about 20,000 to 50,000 people have died from flu-related illnesses this season, according to the C.D.C. Unlike with seasonal influenza, the entire population is thought to be susceptible to the new coronavirus.

.....

"Funny" (in quotes!) you say that. While meetings and conferences are being cancelled all around I just received a reminder from the organizers of a conference to take place in Paris a few weeks from now telling me I'm late with my registration ...

I was just wondering whether they don't get what's going on in the rest of the world or if they are just after my money (i.e. the registration fee) ...

A former Health Service boss, Professor John Ashton, in the UK, said today, although he didn't agree with the method, that the plan seemed to be to let the virus spread through the population and concentrate resources on looking after those that got seriously sick - letting the healthy heal and develope immunity themselves - I've got severe emphysema so I'm not sure I like that plan either - we'll see - glad I caught the Stones last year though..............confused smiley

A two-week break from the gym will actually do your body good.

Go out in the nature, people. Take a brisk walk. Run. Bike. Stay off the gyms and swimming pools (!). A swimming pool is literally a "meat soup", a doctor once told me, as far as infections go.

The fact that health care can now only afford to test the most vulnerable and sickest people of course has to do with the capacity of the system. It's overloaded. You cannot waste time in testing mild cases anymore.

Younger, less vulnerable people will undoubtedly eventually get the virus, carry it, get sick, but will stay at home and deal with it themselves.

There must have been several thousands of Madrileni happily together with 50+thousand Liverpodlians. You ask "what is Boris doing exactly?". Well, he never liked Liverpool and maybe hopes that his favourite team (?) still becomes champion of England by making sure corona takes over the town of the Liverbirds.

Just watched Canal 24 Horas from Spain and there's police inspecting drivers. Curfew in many municipalities. Spain is in a state of emergency. Shops (except grocery stores) etc. closed, you can only go outside to buy necessary food.
