OT: RIP Charles Portis

Just passed on. He's best known as the author of "True Grit". It's a fantastic well written novel full of sly humor and observations of life. The movie adaptations of the book don't do it justice. The movie made later with John Wayne resurrecting the Rooster Cogburn character is a remake of The African Queen. The movie is not rated highly, but the interplay between Wayne's character and the character played by Kargerine Hepburn is a fun/cool battle of the sexes.

RIP.

True Grit was the first film featuring the Rooster Cogburn character (co-starring Glenn Campbell), and it won Wayne his only Oscar for Best Actor in 1969.

The sequel film was titled Rooster Cogburn (1975) with Katharine Hepburn.

And of course the Coen Brothers did their own version with Jeff Bridges in the Cogburn role in 2010.
