Well if ya like sh*tty student muzak like radiohead and nick cave it's obvious you can't get The Stones. It's the rules I guess.
The Stones are A CLASS ACT and the ONLY LEGENDS (almost) left standing.

Nonetheless, as myself, with an outspring as fan in the Brian Jones era, quite often loving other Stones songs than the majority of posters here, I am one, who do like Nick Cave (even if I may sometimes miss guitars) and have recently started listening to albums by Radiohead and find them quite interesting (even if it is very early days yet for me as to Radiohead), your objections are not necessarily valid for every Stones fan.

I have been to over 7000 gigs since 1973.
Ever since I saw The Stones four times at their Earls Court shows in 1970s,
they have been a band that have created and delivered a great live show.
They may be getting older but they still deliver live...big time.

That kind of blind fandom is ridiculous. That's take ball go home betterness. Also there is no relevance in the Stones being a class act and the only legends in regard to other music.

This post has got to be an attempt at humor or worse, simply a troll. Me? I'd rather look at old classic Playboy magazines than make love to a beautiful woman.

It's just a different opinion. I love the Stones on record but live they don't do it for me. I hope that makes it clear for you.

There may be an element to what you're saying that is unknowingly misleading to yourself:

a lot of what the Stones do in the studio is live. The bottoms are live - 2 guitars, bass, drums and piano (yeah I know, not every song). At times very little is added or done to the songs, with exception being the vocals.

What gets me about the Stones live, sometimes, is how bad they perform a song. Some songs just never sound good live - like Heartbreaker, Rocks Off, Love Is Strong, She Was Hot, Anybody Seen My Baby, Undercover Of The Night, Sway, She's So Cold, Neighbours and loads of others, yet there are times when they play something that's damn near as good as the original (Monkey Man is a great example) or even better (Midnight Rambler, Dancing With Mr D, When The Whip Comes Down on SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES) but there are a lot of times when they play something really good or great for a little while, not necessarily better than the original but just different, and then just never get it again (Jumpin' Jack Flash, Sympathy For The Devil, Start Me Up, Honky Tonk Women, Shattered).

I love Shattered but I prefer the 1994-95 live version. I love Jumpin' Jack Flash but I prefer the 1969 version from GIMME SHELTER and then GYYYO!. I love Honky Tonk Women but I prefer the LOVE YOU LIVE version, 1978 and even 1981-82 versions. I love Start Me Up but the only live version I like is from 1989-90 - the rest stink.

Monkey Man is an outstanding song. It was pretty damn cool that they performed it in 1994 but it was even better on the LICKS tour, and it's stellar, really, but it's not as good as the original. Close but not as good. And what got me about that is, they can do that but they can't play Respectable or She Was Hot or She's So Cold with the nuances of their dynamics? That is really frustrating.

I was thinking something very similar. Most of their studio stuff has a live foundation, with overdubs on top. The vibe you feel when a group of musicians are really locked in with each other is incredible, and the Stones have done an amazing job of capturing that element in the studio.

This one of the reason I love them live also, because when they are cooking, holy shit, it is fantastic to witness, in person or on tape.

The other thing I do like about them is that they ARE a bit sloppy when playing live. They are human.

I also have never been a fan of She's So Cold live. Although I actually enjoy listening to it just to see how long they go before someone @#$%& up the arrangement. I think the problem, and it translates to some of their other songs as well, is that when they recorded it in the studio, they did a long jammimg version, and then it was edited down (I think this was done by Chris Kimsey) to the final arrangement for the album. Since they never actually played the final album version arrangement in the studio, it's not something they intuitively know, and therefore becomes something that is easily derailed in a live situation.

Just my two cents...

A friend of mine, once said to me that he enjoyed a Billy Joel concert more than the Stones . He added that Billy's songs live are just as they are on record. And that the Stones songs are almost unrecognizable live.

IIRC the Steel Wheels tour, the Stones tried to play the songs as they were on record.

I also remember Keith saying that the songs "Grow up" and evolve. TO be totally honest,IMO there are a few songs that can't come near the recored version. In particular JJ Flash. Then you have a song like Brown Sugar that is better live. Or songs like Rambler or YCAGWYW which are great either way...

A lot of their songs are edited down.

I was talking about the soft touches, like how She's So Cold is actually a very subtle song. Live they just carpet bomb through it.

Keith: Over the years, you develop a simplified road version of a song that you get used to. But this time, we thought, Let's go back and listen very carefully to the records to find what we were originally going for when we made it. All the subtleties and the half bar jumps. We thought we ought to do the songs up proud and have the things that were on the record. And once you go back and research what you did, you say, Well, the reason we did it like that is because we had these voices or because we had these horns. That's why we have the enlarged line-up. Tumbling Dice without the voices is kind of bare.

It's so predictable that someone who don't get the live version of our lads dig sh*te like Radiohead and nick cave.

If they would say for instance they dig Marvin Gaye and The Band (2 big favourites of mine) I'd be surprised that they wouldn't like stuff like The Stones.

I agree 100% about She's So Cold, it's in the same vein on the record as Satisfaction, that Crawling King Snake-approach they do so well oughta get a chance live when it comes to those 2 beauties. They were close IMHO during B2B with Satisfaction, it works so much better when opening a show I Think.

As much as I adore the Stones and would easily choose at least two-three of their studio albums for my all time personal top 10, they've never done anything for me live. Even in the Taylor years and the legendary bootlegs from that era, I just don't like the way the band sounds and find Jagger's vocals a real turn-off. Keith and Ronnie's "weaving" sounds clunky and uncoordinated to me, and often Charlie sounds like he's playing a different song to everyone else.

I saw them live once on the Voodoo Lounge tour and found the experience to be mostly grim. Very corporate, family friendly and about as far away from Rock and Roll as I could imagine.

Like I said, the records slay me and there's something to love on all of their albums for me, but live they almost sound like a completely different band.

Anyone else not get it live?

I find this very confusing

You're just a bit much with the pandering THE STONES ARE ALL THERE IS crap. I don't care for Elton John but I dig that people like him. I can't stand him, really, but he does have some pretty good tunes. I also can't stand Hootie And The Blowfish but a lot of people like them. That doesn't detract from the Stones. I can't stand DIRTY WORK but I do listen to some songs from it occasionally. I know it's their worst album - and that's not just an emotional view ie opinion: it's truly a horrendous album. Some nice guitar work doesn't detract from a shitty album. A diamond ring in a pile of dog shit is... a diamond ring in a pile of dog shit. But some people love it. It's fun to have fun with it but it doesn't mean anything in the end.

So keep blowing hard for the Stones or lighten up because making fun of someone because they don't like the Stones live and saying well they must like shit bands then is ignorant - it's one thing to be sarcastic, it's another to be loudly judgemental. Why anyone would care is stupid. They like the studio albums, they suck live. You don't go to the shows so saying "one more ticket for me" is stupid.

Well you are the one calling me names pal, while I've just slagged off two crap bands (maybe you know them personally?. I didn't say that the author (WorriedAboutYou) is in anyway wrong with his thoughts, just that I am not surprised him not digging the boys live while digging r-head and n.c who I happen to Think are the EXACT opposites. I would never dream of being rude against a fellow IORRian, but I do however have the right to slag off different acts in the World of Music. That is your right too.

Who isn't going to any shows? I try to see them (Stones) as often as possible so who do you mean? Mr WorriedAboutYou?confused smiley

"It's Still Billy Joel To Me"

What's the matter with the songs he's singin'
Can't you tell that they're pretty lame
After listenin' to a couple albums
Well, they all start to sound the same

So he tried to change his musical style
He tossed all his ballads in the circular file
Then he found the punk sound
Breakin' ground all around
It's still Billy Joel to me

What's the matter with the tune he's writin'
Well, you know it's gonna be a smash
It's so nice when you're a big name artist
Doesn't matter if it sounds like trash

Now everybody thinks the new wave is super
Just ask Linda Ronstadt or even Alice Cooper
It's a big hit, isn't it
Even if it's a piece of junk
It's still Billy Joel to me

Woah, it doesn't matter what the critics say about him
'Cause he doesn't worry how they feel
When you're record's sellin' millions and it's goin' triple platinum
You don't worry 'bout your next meal
'Cause money is no big deal

Maybe he should dye his hair bright pink
And stick a safety pin through his cheeks
Then he'd really fit the new wave image
But he couldn't sit down for weeks

Don't you know about the record business, honey
You gotta be trendy if you wanna make some money
Now everybody's sayin' that he sure sounds funny
But it's still Billy Joel to me

All right, Alfred
Oh

I can hardly wait 'til his next album
Well, I'll bet it's gonna be the rage
Buy a ticket to his next big concert
Well, I wonder what he'll do on stage

It might be disco and it might be the blues
Or maybe even somethin' like the B-52's
Just a handclap, finger snap
Even if it's mindless pap
It's still Billy Joel to me

Everybody's sayin' that he sure sounds funny
But it's still Billy Joel to me

Also, some bands are almost always better live and the Stones aren't one of them, yet they still are definitely a live band in their own right.
Another thing is, some people don't see the point in live albums. I gave a copy of Flashpoint (ok, it is not exactly the best example but still) to a friend, about 20 years ago or so. When he checked the tracklist, he looked at me, a bit surprised, and said "Most of these songs I already got!?!". Ffw to last year, they apparently had listened to the cd for the first time, or rather, had tried to, they told me that they had played the Flashpoint cd but had stopped after half a minute. Some people...

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm not trying to start any arguments, just wondered if anyone else shared the same opinion.

I forgot that I do really like the version of Under My Thumb on the Let's Spend The Night Together movie, the guitars on that are amazing, and of course Keith looks cool as hell the way he bends the neck and seems to be wringing the song out of his guitar.

As for other bands that do it for me live - Depeche Mode are almost always amazing, Iggy Pop is always wildly entertaining and I saw some unforgettable concerts by the Cramps - they were one band that I'd say definitely sound better live than on record.

I really didn't enjoy the corporate atmosphere, the insane queues for everything, how sanitised and packaged it felt, the lack of any edge or danger. For me it felt like the antithesis of rock and roll. Very mass market and safe.

I'm not saying anything was awful or terrible, just that I don't get it. The Cramps in a small venue - hell yes. That is rock and roll.

OK, thanks for further clarifying. I do recall an awful lot of antipathy for the VEGAS STONES era that brought innumerable complaints to this board over the last decade or two, so on that point I believe your observations have good merit.

So, playing within that sandbox, I will say that the show is wildly entertaining, as if you're going to see Cirque du Soleil...super professional and it would have to be charge $1000+ for tickets all over the world.

Before Steel Wheels Mick convinced Keith to go corporate, good or bad. I'm convinced that while they may have 'sold out' in some respects, we probably wouldn't be celebrating the stones after the 90s had they not gone this route.

But this isn't the 60s or 70s anymore, and the band is in their 6th decade of existence, so I think it's ok to allow for that. Instead of overthinking it, or comparing to indie-type bands as you are, maybe just try to enjoy it...sometimes you get what you need.

"Charlie seems to play another song than the rest of the band". THAT'S a joke if I ever heard one. Now go away.

Actually I did go to the cinema to watch the Some Girls: Live in Texas '78 movie, I was one of only about ten people there, this was on the only night it was showing in North London. It was okay but didn't change my life. Is the Handsome Girls bootleg much better?

I was talking about the soft touches, like how She's So Cold is actually a very subtle song. Live they just carpet bomb through it.

Yes. What makes SSC great is that it is minimalist. That got lost on the 81-82 tour. It fit well in the set though because the punk feel of it kept it from being too much of an Ernie Watts show.

It was actually marginally better on the ABB tour.

I think the official Some Girls is pretty good, Handsome Girls has more variety and maybe better performances of some songs, but I don't think it is a major difference other than that (and the official one probably has better sound).

Only ten people showing up for the presentation of a film that is widely available on dvd? I am surprised it drew ten people honestly. Unless they had a very nice sound system they advertised.

That Billy Joel stuff up there ^^^^ is pretty darn funny. What a dork.

Well I like both main shows in the box set, I do believe Houston is the 2nd one (need to go and check but can't be arsed right now). The sound is better than the brickwalled Live In Texas but it's the same show (Fort Worth).

Alright, then my humble advice would be to fly over the pond this summer and treat yourself to a pit ticket, you probably saw them way back in the stadium in 95 and I would rather Watch paint dry than to stand anywhere else than FOS (or sit in the nosebleeds for that matter) for any Stones gig. Then maybe you will change your mind.

Nothing (except making love with a REALLY beautiful lady and meeting Keith Richards) beats seeing The Stones up front, doesnae matter if it's in a Theatre, arena or a stadium.

Why anyone would care is stupid. They like the studio albums, they suck live. You don't go to the shows so saying "one more ticket for me" is stupid."

Pal. HAHA!

The point of the shows was him not going has zero influence on you.

But the other point - you are slagging. It's NOTHING. Come on. "If you don't like the Stones live then you must love Radiohead because they are college hoofster geek music"? That's just garbage. You're assuming things and pounding about the Stones being the best ever and the only best.

Lighten up.
