Well if ya like sh*tty student muzak like radiohead and nick cave it's obvious you can't get The Stones. It's the rules I guess.
The Stones are A CLASS ACT and the ONLY LEGENDS (almost) left standing.

Nonetheless, as myself, with an outspring as fan in the Brian Jones era, quite often loving other Stones songs than the majority of posters here, I am one, who do like Nick Cave (even if I may sometimes miss guitars) and have recently started listening to albums by Radiohead and find them quite interesting (even if it is very early days yet for me as to Radiohead), your objections are not necessarily valid for every Stones fan.

This post has got to be an attempt at humor or worse, simply a troll. Me? I'd rather look at old classic Playboy magazines than make love to a beautiful woman.
It's just a different opinion. I love the Stones on record but live they don't do it for me. I hope that makes it clear for you.
There may be an element to what you're saying that is unknowingly misleading to yourself:
a lot of what the Stones do in the studio is live. The bottoms are live - 2 guitars, bass, drums and piano (yeah I know, not every song). At times very little is added or done to the songs, with exception being the vocals.
What gets me about the Stones live, sometimes, is how bad they perform a song. Some songs just never sound good live - like Heartbreaker, Rocks Off, Love Is Strong, She Was Hot, Anybody Seen My Baby, Undercover Of The Night, Sway, She's So Cold, Neighbours and loads of others, yet there are times when they play something that's damn near as good as the original (Monkey Man is a great example) or even better (Midnight Rambler, Dancing With Mr D, When The Whip Comes Down on SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES) but there are a lot of times when they play something really good or great for a little while, not necessarily better than the original but just different, and then just never get it again (Jumpin' Jack Flash, Sympathy For The Devil, Start Me Up, Honky Tonk Women, Shattered).
I love Shattered but I prefer the 1994-95 live version. I love Jumpin' Jack Flash but I prefer the 1969 version from GIMME SHELTER and then GYYYO!. I love Honky Tonk Women but I prefer the LOVE YOU LIVE version, 1978 and even 1981-82 versions. I love Start Me Up but the only live version I like is from 1989-90 - the rest stink.
Monkey Man is an outstanding song. It was pretty damn cool that they performed it in 1994 but it was even better on the LICKS tour, and it's stellar, really, but it's not as good as the original. Close but not as good. And what got me about that is, they can do that but they can't play Respectable or She Was Hot or She's So Cold with the nuances of their dynamics? That is really frustrating.

I was thinking something very similar. Most of their studio stuff has a live foundation, with overdubs on top. The vibe you feel when a group of musicians are really locked in with each other is incredible, and the Stones have done an amazing job of capturing that element in the studio.
This one of the reason I love them live also, because when they are cooking, holy shit, it is fantastic to witness, in person or on tape.
The other thing I do like about them is that they ARE a bit sloppy when playing live. They are human.
I also have never been a fan of She's So Cold live. Although I actually enjoy listening to it just to see how long they go before someone @#$%& up the arrangement. I think the problem, and it translates to some of their other songs as well, is that when they recorded it in the studio, they did a long jammimg version, and then it was edited down (I think this was done by Chris Kimsey) to the final arrangement for the album. Since they never actually played the final album version arrangement in the studio, it's not something they intuitively know, and therefore becomes something that is easily derailed in a live situation.
Just my two cents...

Not my fault nick cave and radiohead are sh*te mate. They are the polar opposite of all things that The Stones stand for so I'm not surprised the author of this thread don't dig our boys live. Comes with the territory.
Stones: Great band mixing different music traditions with amazing results. Doesn't hurt that the band includes some of the (if not THE) coolest people who have ever walked the earth.
n.c and radiohead: shoe-gazing, suicidal, globe-eyed, ugly, self-hating sh*te with plant pot-looking members who no-one would recognize if they were Walking down the street.

A friend of mine, once said to me that he enjoyed a Billy Joel concert more than the Stones . He added that Billy's songs live are just as they are on record. And that the Stones songs are almost unrecognizable live.
IIRC the Steel Wheels tour, the Stones tried to play the songs as they were on record.
I also remember Keith saying that the songs "Grow up" and evolve. TO be totally honest,IMO there are a few songs that can't come near the recored version. In particular JJ Flash. Then you have a song like Brown Sugar that is better live. Or songs like Rambler or YCAGWYW which are great either way...

As much as I adore the Stones and would easily choose at least two-three of their studio albums for my all time personal top 10, they've never done anything for me live. Even in the Taylor years and the legendary bootlegs from that era, I just don't like the way the band sounds and find Jagger's vocals a real turn-off. Keith and Ronnie's "weaving" sounds clunky and uncoordinated to me, and often Charlie sounds like he's playing a different song to everyone else.
I saw them live once on the Voodoo Lounge tour and found the experience to be mostly grim. Very corporate, family friendly and about as far away from Rock and Roll as I could imagine.
Like I said, the records slay me and there's something to love on all of their albums for me, but live they almost sound like a completely different band.
Anyone else not get it live?

Cheers mate.
It's so predictable that someone who don't get the live version of our lads dig sh*te like Radiohead and nick cave.
If they would say for instance they dig Marvin Gaye and The Band (2 big favourites of mine) I'd be surprised that they wouldn't like stuff like The Stones.
I agree 100% about She's So Cold, it's in the same vein on the record as Satisfaction, that Crawling King Snake-approach they do so well oughta get a chance live when it comes to those 2 beauties. They were close IMHO during B2B with Satisfaction, it works so much better when opening a show I Think.

Once was enough. The experience just wasn't something that I appreciated. I really didn't enjoy the corporate atmosphere, the insane queues for everything, how sanitised and packaged it felt, the lack of any edge or danger. For me it felt like the antithesis of rock and roll. Very mass market and safe.
I'm not saying anything was awful or terrible, just that I don't get it. The Cramps in a small venue - hell yes. That is rock and roll.

Well if you Think dm and the cramps are superior live than the Stones then the joke's on you pal, wasting your time here. But you seem to admit UMT sounds good, that's a start. Now off you go and listen through all of Handsome Girls but since you dig those polar opposites I Think ya won't change yer mind.
"Charlie seems to play another song than the rest of the band". THAT'S a joke if I ever heard one. Now go away.

I was talking about the soft touches, like how She's So Cold is actually a very subtle song. Live they just carpet bomb through it.

Well you are the one calling me names pal, while I've just slagged off two crap bands (maybe you know them personally?. I didn't say that the author (WorriedAboutYou) is in anyway wrong with his thoughts, just that I am not surprised him not digging the boys live while digging r-head and n.c who I happen to Think are the EXACT opposites. I would never dream of being rude against a fellow IORRian, but I do however have the right to slag off different acts in the World of Music. That is your right too.
Who isn't going to any shows? I try to see them (Stones) as often as possible so who do you mean? Mr WorriedAboutYou?
