Beside that there's another problem with rare and especially unique items: Nobody is really able to tell what their worth until they are sold. And some of them are sold only once in 50 years…

Most t-shirts anyone paid $40 for a very unlikely to be valuable other than sentimentally in the future. They are produced in such huge numbers and by the time they are vintage the market won't be as big. Don't buy these for investment, buy these to enjoy. The last Jagger worn t-shirt to sell with great authenticity went for over $10,000. The blue shirt he dropped on the stage in NYC $32,000.

I agree with you on Wyman, sadly for many he has already lost his relevance, historical importance is a different factor. I for example collect right back to the beginning of the band, I own the earliest known surviving concert poster, the first contract Brian signed representing the band and one of the handful of 5 track IBC acetates (their first recording) etc... but I have never seen the band with Wyman (other than as a guest). He is therefore as an individual much less prominent in my collecting and that of many others too. In this auction for example I am much more interested in the Rolling Stones items that happen to have been owned by Bill as opposed to the Bill Wyman outfits etc... Bill is certainly no Mick or Keith. I do have some pretty cool Bill items though including his Rolling Stones resignation letter and an original Andy Warhol polaroid photo of him from Love You Live.

When it comes to assessing one off or hard to compare items that is totally down to experience. Having spent 25 years collecting seriously across all types of item I have become pretty good at this. Take for example the last auction of an important early poster in the UK. Here you can see a text from a mate of mine at 08.46 on the 15th of November 2019 alerting me to the auctioning of a UK 1964 poster. It was featured in The Times Newspaper, and in my urgent panic to find out where it was for sale I thought the paper said it was £3,000 but actually they said £5,000. Regardless of that, with no prior knowledge only a photo of the photo in the paper in two minutes flat I assessed the poster at £15,000, now look at the second image from the front page of the BBC website two weeks later when the poster actually sold... (not bad hey!)






I don't buy for investment, I buy for passion and enjoyment. I do try to only buy quality although sometimes you have to buy the junk to get to the gems. The focus of my collecting these days is on personal items, lyrics, concert posters, passes, promo stuff, basically stuff that was never sold.

My museum will be open in London within a couple of months and my book will follow. This is my passion and I love nothing more than sharing it with the world.

I'm not sure if it's there anymore, but there was a Vox Teardrop bass that Bill played at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam BC (near Vancouver) as of 2014. It was mounted on a wall, with no glass or protection, so if you were tall enough (I'm 5'11), you could reach up and actually touch it. I remember plucking one of the strings. I think it was the one he used on some mid-60's recordings, including 'Satisfaction', but I'm really not sure.

I don't think the one at auction (pictured here) is the same, since this one says 'Wyman Bass' on the headstock, and not 'Vox'.

Has Bill lost that much relevance that no one cares or is everyone holding their cards close to their chest. It's funny to see lot 14 and 15... I commissioned Philip to sign 125 pairs of two pictures as an affordable or trade item and I gifted the pair to Bill.

So many items. Maybe he is flooding the market? I'm sure all these items will round up to a good round sum in the end though...

Is this an ongoing auction? Is there a link I can use to access it? I have looked through most of this thread but I do not see anything other than Juliens and that appears to not be happening until sept 11.

The auction itself will take place in Beverly Hills (and online) on the 11th 12th and 13th. Arguing with myself about whether to drive down..

These early posters a very rare. The handbills are more common but this is a poster.

I would have offered $300.000 for Brian's golden Gibson, but .... I don't have that kind of money, so I wonder if I could trade my soul for that guitar. You see, my soul is priceless (but who's isn't?).
Ah, never mind. I'm sure I will enjoy looking at the outcome of the auction.

There is currently a glut on the soul market so I would appraise yours at, ah, fifty bob, and dropping.

After browsing through all items, some thoughts come to mind:

- Impressive the amount of memorabilia Bill kept through the years. I bet many other artists would travel in time, if they could, to save stuff and see its value today;

- Interesting the several invoices signed by Brian. Probably Bill kept them knowing they would increase in value through the years. But an invoice from an indian restaurant probably would end up in the trash bin. Good thing it didn't.

- In between the items there's some stuff that it's not really memorabilia, but old stuff Bill had around and is taking the opportunity to put his name on it and get some extra value. The casual cotton shirts and the 1999 Mercedes come to mind.

- I guess other artists are keeping their eyes on this auction and see how it goes. I think Bill is doing it in the right timing, and maybe others could follow. Not because of their age - but their fans age.

Watch out for their charges too ie the buyers premium fee at 25 percent ,the on line service fee 3 percent,taxes,retrieval costs etc.All plus the hammer price.
Some amazing artefacts here.The Aladdins cave has been opened for sure.
Staging the auction in Beverley Hills is a sure sign they are chasing the big bucks.
Several years ago I dealt with Stephen Wyman and bought bucket loads of stuff at reasonable prices.
Far better if the sale was through the Wyman web site or an auction in London.
I am sure the rest of the Stones are watching closely to see how much they can make further on down the line.
And by the way anyone who tries to diminish the importance of Bill in the history of the Stones is clearly deluded.The Watts/Wyman combo was unmatchable.Glad to have seen that live many many times.

The 25% buyers premium is a bit steep for sure.. saving the 3% online fee and shipping/insurance costs etc by going in person may help a little..

Will be interesting to see how high the demand is.
On one hand, the pandemic as it relates to peoples financial situation could make it more of a buyers market. On the other hand, there's a lot more people willing and able to buy online around the world. Also, when you get into the really expensive items, those able to afford those aren't impacted by job/business loss etc. as much. Will be fun to see what sparks the bidding wars.

This is almost certainly not the original poster. It will be the reprint done by Record Collector magazine many years ago. Bill admitted to me he didn’t really have any early 60’s posters although the 63 one in the sale is real it’s also the most common know 63 poster with around 6 or 7 surviving copies known (including one in my museum). Some stuff is way underestimated, some stuff like the bootleg picture discs are just pure padding. It’s a shame most of the white matte awards are so damaged as they can’t be repaired without ruining them. There are a few lots with super low estimates that will fly but given I will be bidding on some of them then maybe I save a full commentary until after the auction!

So, some sucker is bidding $1500 for a magazine reprint poster worth maybe $10?

It’s an old reprint and very well done. Only very careful magnified inspection shows the difference any only a few are expert enough to tell the difference. This isn’t like the common German 65 reprints I can tell from 10 feet away. The reprint itself is very convincing and not common. Given people pay $300 to $500 for a very common Winterland 72 reprint then this must be worth $500 to $800 especially as it’s Bill’s. I agree someone could end up being very disappointed but that will probably never know. There are plenty more misdescribed items. The 63 poster is real as the guy that gave it to him was the same source as mine.
