Rolling Stones in the Amazon in Peru in 1969?

Los Rolling Stones en Perú (Pequeños tratados) (Spanish Edition).

My wife is from Peru & she found this book, which translates to "The Rolling Stones in Peru". Apparently, they spent some time in Iquitos, which is in the Amazon. I googled all this, but cannot find any credible information regarding this. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks.

Jagger has spent some time in Peruvian Amazonia in the initial stages of shooting Fitzcarraldo (Werner Herzog movie with Klaus Kinski). I'm not sure about the year(s), must have been 1979 or 1980. The movie character Fitzgerald's (i.e. Fitzcarraldo) idea is to build an opera house in Iquitos. Maybe that's what the book refers to. Whether other members of the Stones were also around at some point I don't know.

Wasn't the story about the origin of "Glimmer Twins" -- a rich old lady on a cruise that Mick and keith took for some time off who kept asking them 'Who are you, give me a glimmer?' -- supposed to have been in South America, maybe an Amazon cruise? Not sure, but it seems to ring some bells. Maybe closer to 1969 than Fitzcarraldo?

Mick and Keith went to Brazil and Peru in December 1968.
It's when they wrote "Honky Tonk Women".

Think it was a cruise from Lisbon to Rio and an eccentric English woman they met was asking them for a glimmer.

On the 7th day God created The Rolling Stones

Yep, that's why HTW has this distinctive latin feel ... winking smiley

Wasn't there talk once that the riff of HTW came from Ry Cooder?

I think it's the same trip as in the other responses. With Anita and Marianne

Not the riff. They had that on the Satanic sessions already. But some of the licks Keith plays on HTW are taken from Cooder's playing on Downtown Suzie.

They also spent some hours in Bogotá, Colombia on that trip.

Koen's link and the discussion there suggests the riff, rather, and not just some random licks. That's more or less how I remembered it. Seems to me that I read about Ry's claim to have come up with the riff already back in the seventies.

Keith's statement, "In the south of America we went to a ranch and wrote HTW because I was into a cowboy thing" rather suggest that what they wrote there was some version of Country Honk and not so much HTW as released as a single.
