I am a bit disappointed that 2 remixes of Scarlet are on the album

Where? I can't finnd them on my physical 2 CD version.

They should be on disc 2 (track 11 and 12) on the super deluxe 4 disc set. I didn't receive the physical discs yet, but I've seen, that they are downloadable via Amazon, if you bought the 4 disc set. Also available as a complete download set here: [www.qobuz.com]

I do not see them listed here: [www.bravado.de] Only 10 tracks on CD 2.

So I'm looking foreward to next thursday, the physical discs will arrive that day. Possibly there will also be only 10 tracks. But finally 12 tracks are downloadable via Amazon as mp3's.

So would it be fair to say that DR-wise, it sucks? All three, the original release, the bonus tracks, and the Brussels recording? And by "original download", you mean the original download when the official Brussels was first offered? And that came in 9s and 10s, with one 11, on Angie, which makes sense because it goes from very soft sounds to Jagger nearly screaming into the mike.

What are DR specs for the original LP?

jb

Yes I have bought the download in 2010 ? Mastering is so-so.

The 2020 remix is Goats Head Soup pumped on air to the max. Not sure to hear where's the improvement...
Well... It seems that there is better separation between instruments. They are placed on a spesific positions of stereo stage. Their tonality is also adjusted so one do not interfere with the other. So 'horizontally' (in terms of instruments separations) the stereo stage is OK. On the other hand everything is up to the max. You can hear everything almost on the same level. Sometimes bass guitar is transformed into leading instrument, while in the original mix it was buried somewhere. On the other case drums or harp jump into your face or you hear extra vocal lines. The 'depth' of the stage is vanished. One can find all these modifications nice, the other - unnatural.

Thus, improvements are controversial. Especially if you count in low dynamic range of the record (at least in digital domain).

Saving the best for last, the '100 Years Ago' piano demo gets the recognition of the standout bonus track. Nicky Hopkins plays a stunningly beautiful piano along with Mick's wistful and wonderfully sung vocals.

Doesn't sound like Nicky's playing. Too many plain chords. In fact it's more than one piano. Maybe Billy preston doing chords and Nicky on top? Four hands playing?

You hear more than one piano? Gonna have to take a harder listen to it. Nicky plays on the album version. Could this be Mick on Piano?

i also hear two pianos
I know these are not always very accurate, but the youtube video list mick and Nicky on piano

Many articles the week prior to the release stated Keith playing on one end while Mick was at the other side.

After listening closer, I'm pretty sure that's Nicky. Listen at around 0:30.
The chords are very likely Mick

really took by surprise by the "alternate" takes here 100YA, DWMD, Heartbreaker and HYL
wow
was expecting some given away backtracks but

DWMD sounds like an haunting outtake from Performance soundtrack
Heartbreaker would have been the perfect choice for a blaxploitation movie 1973
HYL is a 5 minutes long blues joy, almost a different take more than a mix
and then 100YA that in this form seems the real missing link to exile

good job whoever chose the tracks

smileys with beer

Yes, the instrumentation/playing/production is so different ! One has to assume that this is indeed how they were recorded in Jamaica since they didn't have pre-production sessions. They almost sound like "unplugged" versions ! Actually in Crossfire Hurricane you can hear Mick and Keith listening to an acetate of "Good Time Women"/"Tumbling Dice" and it's very much in the same vein as the DWMD and Heartbreaker that we get here, subtle playing and sparse instrumentation. You don't imagine the Stones playing like that on early versions but rather expect them to be "thrashing around" like the "garage band" Mick Taylor described when he first started recording with them !

I love this deluxe album.Way better than the Exileone.Martin did a great job.Next up for him should be IORR and maybe Steel Wheels.I also think that although Sticky Fingers is one their 4best albums, some of them like Sway and Dead Flowers could have been mixed better. And on the All the Rage video, does the crystal clear snippets of Europe 1973 live shows mean they may have a full concert of that tour in their vaults or is that a computer generated video and not real clips of filmed concerts

The Scarlet-Remixes are only on the Digital Download - [iorr.org] - as well as Streaming - [iorr.org] - of the Deluxe-Edition. They're not on the worldwide physical releases (CD2) - [TheRollingStonesShop.co.uk].

Only the CD2 of the Japanese 3CD+BR-Box has as Tracks 11+12 the Boni: '100 Years Ago' [Glyn Johns 1973 Mix] and 'Can You Hear The Music' [Glyn Johns 1973 Mix] - [www.Universal-Music.co.jp] , [iorr.org] .

I assume the complaint about the 2 Scarlet-Remixes comes from the listening via Streaming (79% US-Marketshare in 2019 according to the RIAA).

I have listened to the entire album via streaming with good headphone(wirelessBose) and although I am not a HIFI quality driven listener, I was able to notice the details, the clarity, the layers related to the sound; I feel like I am earing musical parts that were not there on the other editions of GHS.

Guys, drink use the word 'dynamics' responsibly.
For this release there is virtually no dynamics. The record is brickwalled.

Old CBS CD has average DR11 with tracks in 10-12 range
Virgin CD has similar values (DR 10-12) but is a tad louder.
2009 remaster (the hated one) is DR6 with tracks in 5-7 range
2013 Japanese flat transfer DR10 (9-11)
2020 new mix DR6 (Silver Train DR4, Star, Star DR5). In places it is worth in terms of dynamics than 2009 remaster.

The fact that some instruments and/or vocals sound louder or can be heard more clear does not necessarily mean the record has better dynamic range. Punch and loudness, or better to say - brickwall is the proper term for this record, but not dynamics.

And unfortunately, it's the same for Brussels Affair :

does this 'brick walling' also apply to the new Vinyl version of GHS? Just listening to it and I don't really recognize the 'loudness' you are talking about. Instruments are clearer and more separation, I hear that, which is a good thing. But I don't hear the effect that every instrument is now louder or harsher. Could be me, not able to hear these kind of details. Would like to hear some of your technical insights on the vinyl version though! Interesting stuff.

No. Vinyls are not that compressed and loud. There are certain technical limitations that do not allow to put volume at the max as on CDs.

Few questions (sorry if they have been discussed before):
1) Did Mick do an overdub on the piano demo of 100 years ago and the alternate mix of Hide your love? I think I'm not listening to his 1973 voice.
2) I like the lead guitar on Hide your live (alternate remix). Again, it has a very 'fresh' approach to it. Could it be possible that Mick Taylor added his guitar part this year for this mix of the track?

I really like the bonus LP, really great stuff on there.

Yes, Mick’s vocals were so murky I was surprised that I heard a few things for the very first time...after listening to this album daily regularly since the 1990s.

Overall, I’m pleased with this release. Scarlet was obviously a curiosity, and then over-hyped by Don Was...but as a whole I like it.

Yes, you're right. But do you think Jagger did new vocals for it? I read somewhere in an interview he did do some vocal work for the 2020 album.

yes, i asked myself the same with "100 years ago" - and i am not sure if the piano track is really from 1973....it sounds very "modern" comparing to the other pianos on the record (coming down again, winter, can u hear the music, hide your love).
i love it anyway :-)

What is great about this new version of Goats Head Soup is that it now has the clarity almost to the level of Tattoo You.

Dunno if these Credits are any better than the ones from Universal Music (Box-set, YouTube, Qobuz) which should always be taken with a grain of salt.

So according to the credits, nobody plays piano on 100 Years Ago even though there's a piano being played? spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Also with this new mix, I can hear an acoustic guitar on Heartbreaker, which can also be heard clearly on the Glyn Johns 1973 mix. Could never hear it before.

Also very interesting that Bill is only on 3 tracks.

Very interesting!! I know absolutely nothing about these instruments so it's cool to see something like this. Thanks Irix!! smileys with beer

Also unless my ears are deceiving me, I can hear a piano in the intro of the song being played along with the clavinet.

the fact that bill is only on 3 tracks shows that when he left the band in 1991, i wish they had asked taylor to rejoin. in the studio keith, ron and taylor could have shared the bass duties. on stage on say a21 song setlist they could have had taylor and wood split bassduties on 16 songs with keith on maybe 3 others and an acoustic set
